My idea on this thread is that you post your thoughts and opinions on Caesars Legion

I personally think they are a really cool faction, and I like them as much as I like Robert House. Say I coudn't pick House for some reason, I'd rather go with the hyper violent pseudo Romans than NCR.

A bunch of Luddite fags in skirts who think they're awesome for wiping out and assimilating a bunch of tribals.

    Still better than the NCR.

Well written, interesting command structure. I like it a lot , I especially enjoy their Guerilla fear tactics.

I'd rather go with NCR to be honest.

I mean, NCR has spent all this time building up a fully-functioning nation, and yeah they have there flaws, but they are generally a force for good in the world, and better than nothing.

They've brought law and order to the Wasteland without having to resort to crucifixion and slavery. Surely that's better than what Legion offers.

In the region they are from, they are effective as a viable form of post-apocalyptic civilization. After all, most of the tribes from where they were from had become violent savages with relatively primitive practices so making them follow ideals, customs and practices from an ancient civilization (Ancient Rome) would pacify their region but not be too alien to the less technologically-inclined tribes which eases integration into this society.

In the West Coast, they would not be as effective. The people of that region (the NCR and arguably the tribes reformed under Mr House) are relatively modernized with modern customs, systems and practices in effect. The Legion is following a system that modern society would frown upon and it shows in game with how the Legion is frequently referred by the people of Freeside, New Vegas and the like as being an army of primitive barbarians or marauders.

The idea of creating a nation based on an ancient civilization rather than rebuilding modern civilization due to a variety of reasons such as perceived inadequacies of modern civilization by its founder and the people in the region having devolved to a certain extent is a thought-provoking one.

Amazing idea, lacking execution. Legion is awesome in so many ways and awful in so many other, which makes it a fantastic faction. However, due to reasons outside the game itself, it was never fleshed out all that well, which is the greatest tragedy of FNV.

I had a theory that we're also not seeing Caesar at his best and a lot of his decisions in the Mojave are driven by his tumor.

Not enough balanced with the ncr. Would have worked better if Caesar wasn't such an hypocritical prick. The faction do manage to be bbelievable but not to seem a viable choice for the player, unless he wants to play evil.

I agree that there isn't enough Legion content. I wish that the Prisoner's story was some alternate campaign with Victor Presper as an NCR antagonist. Caesar, Elijah, and Presper would form a trinity of crazy, genocidal, old men.

I don't remember him being particularly hypocritical just being a dick. It is very easy to call someone a hypocrite. A vegan can call a vegetarian a hypocrite. Leftist can call someone a hypocrite for being against abortion but being for capital punishment. I saw a documentary where someone calls people hypocrites for being against government control with things like soda drink size bans but allow corporations to manipulate people to drinking bigger serving of soda. Not everyone has the same priorities and values.

No, most evil characters would probably go with Yes Man. Character should actually agree with the ideals of Caesar for this to work. Obsidian knows that the Legion doesn't have that much content and I think that it hides it by tricking people to thinking that siding with the Legion is not an option. Most of the first few people that you encounter only talk negatively about the Legion and imply that they would be hostile towards you. The most likely first encounter with the Legion is in Nipton which gives a bad impression. Also, Vulpes Inculta was fucking asking for it. "As are all crimes. If you feel strongly about it, attack us, and soon you won't feel a thing." The most likely first human companion that people get, Boone, makes all Legionnaires naturally hostile which is a function unique to him but makes sense. Only after playing Lonesome Road do people realized why the Legion isn't naturally hostile towards the Courier when they are normally hostile to the people of New Vegas.

Also, fuck this stupid "all sides need to be equally viable" meme. They did that with Skyrim and I couldn't give two shits about the civil war for these reasons:
    1. Dragons are about to destroy the world.
    2. Not much would change if either side wins.
    3. The Thalmor is the true enemy of both sides yet you can't do anything about it.
    4. It never feel like things couldn't just been talked over.
    5. You have only two shit options.
    6. People act like the war is in some far away place.
    7. Neither side care about your Dragonborn status outside pest-control and how you can fight for them.
    8. Ulfric Stormcloak is unkillable until you reach the right point in the right branch of the quest.
New Vegas had four possible options yet people focus on that one particular faction being too evil to join even if it makes the civil war worth caring about. I couldn't give a shit about even saving the world in Skyrim. If the Legion is so shit, why are people still talking about them? Hardly anyone is talking about which side to join the civil war in Skyrim. At least, you can kill Caesar. I think even Dr. Fallout would be pissed off at the Legion if Caesar is given a magic plot armor like Ulfric Stormcloak. This flavor of moral ambiguity is part of that hack's (Emil Pagliarulo) stupid checklist of deep storytelling. "Let's throw a few lines in the last minute to imply that our super evil faction isn't completely evil even if it contradicts with the rest of the plot." "This quest about helping this ghoul find a nice home is too straight forward? Let's make him evil! Should we add some scripting to reflect that twist? No, that takes too much effort."

I disagree. I think the Yes Man ending is rather neutral. It's about ensuring a New Vegas free of the NCR, Legion, or House. After the Courier gets the Chip back, the Legion offers full amnesty and the option to speak with Caesar. I think this is the point where most players find out that the Legion is playable. I also think that players don't have to agree with Caesar's ideals in order to work for him. Being on Caesar's side means you get to murder civvies and soldiers whenever you want and you'll get applauded for it. Also, proponents of murder, slavery, and rape could see Caesar's Legion as the best way to ensure those happen on a regular basis.

It is sad that Obsidian had to cut Legion content. I'm pretty sure there was going to be a Legion companion and everything. :(

I was saying that most evil characters would side with Yes Man; not that the Yes Man route is evil for characters. Yes Man is about taking over New Vegas with yourself in charge. If someone is only look out for number one, the Yes Man route give them the most power.
What kind of cartoon villain are you thinking of? If you are about causing misery, you could destroy the dam.

    You mean Ulysses.

I see what you mean. Not all evil characters are power hungry, though. Or intelligent, for that matter.

I thought we were talking about evil characters, not morally gray.

And...maybe? I thought I heard about more Legion content that was supposed to be in the main game, but Obsidian ran out of time.

Ah yes, the tragedy of the decade. Yes, Obsidian had a ton of Legion content planned. There's a lot of cut missions for them as an example, mostly Legion paths in regular missions. (Such as siding with the Legion in That Lucky Old Sun or Birds of a Feather) There's voiced lines in files that suggest Caesar and the Brotherhood could have had a sort-of truce instead of him forcing you to wipe them out. The entire east side of the map where the Fort sits alone was originally going to have Legion towns over there so we could see civilian life and get more of a grey sense from this faction. And as Jo said, Ulysses was supposed to be a Legion companion. But because of Bethesda's greed and making that time limit bet with Obsidian, none of it was implemented.

Yes, caesar is hypocritical, always do as you say, it as what I do. I don't allow medecine and tech, but I use them myself, every life is expendable except the ones I care. Let's value honor but lie to our enemies and so on. He is hypocritical by accepting things in the closet that he would publicly forbid for the others.

Not a viable solution as he doesn't believe himself in his own ideology and it gets worse once he dies. He bans history condemning it to repeat itself. The game dwelve in the bad deeds of the legion, but not really in the peace it brings to people. You never see a situation in which you come to thing " if the ncr had handled1 this specific situation instead of the legion, it would have been worse". There is no balance at all. ( doesn't need to be symetric)
