Children Patch to Fallout 1?

Hi Skynet,

Great ... but I have some questions:

1. I couldn't find your patch in the file section, where did you say it was placed?

2. Do I have to start a new game before it'll work? (I'm still in Junktown now)

Go to the mainpage and you see it in "Hot Nuclear Files" section or go to downloads and then upload section.

Sorry, I haven't tested will it work with currents saves, but it should.

Thanks - you're the man!

But there's one bad thing ... you have to start a new game in order to activate the kids :(

Are you sure, that the only kids you see in Fallout, only are located in Shady Sands and The Glow? If that's true ... how much do actually miss then?

But thanks again, Skynet!

If I remember right, there are kids in Shady Sands, Hub, Glow, Master's vault, and some random encounters.

Atleast two noticable features should active after the Children Patch.

1. Becoming a childkiller gets bounty hunters come after you in random encounters

2. A mini-quest regarding a boy named Billy in the Hub

Look at the Per's guide for more info.

I've made up my mind ... I'm going to start a new game.
And thanks for all your help and kindness, I really appreciate it.

Thanks pal.

Bob's Used Cars? I think I've had that encounter only ONCE. I started the game with the premade thief character. And after a few squares of travelin from V13 to the south I got it. Did it have scorpions?

No scorpions, you have a random encounter with a guy standing in front of a shed with a "Bob's Used Cars" sign and several rusted-out vehicles scattered around. The guy is nuts, tries to sell you a car. Pick the door on the shed, there is a crate in the upper right hand corner that has the LE BB gun (does 25 points damage), and a footlocker in the left hand corner that has a Red Ryder BB gun and some BB ammo.

I think you have to have at least a 7 Luck to have this encounter.

Billy at Hub? What the... I've never had that quest. Most propably because I never saw any kids in FO1 IIRC. Bah, it's annoying when they mess around with the game and remove stuff that make the game worse.

I tried the patch and it works fine, thanks Skynet! I wonder why no one thought of this solution before considering how rabid people are about the Fo2 child patch. You don't have to start a new game to see the kids - however, I found a bug in Shady Sands which can cause them to get stuck offscreen. I wasn't able to locate the body in the Glow, though. Also I'm not sure if the Billy thing works, but I have to do more research (has anyone managed to trigger that?).

I have been trying to trigger the "Billy" quest every since I saw your mention of it in your guide. Went in with a high speech & INT, tried all the conversation options, no luck... Once I get out of my first conversation with him, all I get is floating script.

Well I'm not sure about the scorpions. Ah, this is the one i got! It was the 1st time I played Fallout and I only searched the footlocker on the left and got the Red Ryder BB gun and ammo. I thought it was a very powerful gun but then I wondered why it only do like 0-2 damage on scorpions and then checked it's stats. Man, was I disappointed. Then I started the game over and over again and NEVER had the encounter EVER again. Propably because I play most of the time with a char that has luck 2-4.

In the U.S. version I have, there are bodies at the glow that are neither in powered armor, nor are they nondescript piles of ash. Some of them are ashen, but they're distinctly corpse-shaped. One of them is definitely a child. I also seem to remember something about the "Vault Dweller" body, or something similar. I may have a save in the glow, so I suppose I could check if anyone is that interested.

Thanks, I wasn´t aware of those problems. To tell the truth, I used just about two hours of my time to make and test the patch. My testing was just a quick travel to Shady Shands and Hub´s entrance, founded kids, talked to them. Then I just packed and uploaded it to NMA.

If the Billy quest doesn´t work, I could try to rip the script files from my "special edition" Fallout. But it *should* work, cause I think that they just removed the kid graphics when making the UK version (like in Fallout2).

Body should be in the lowest level of the base. Opposite to generator room.

If it doesn't work it's not a problem with your patch, but with the scripts (the US and/or the UK versions). You must trigger a sequence where Dan yells at Billy to be able to talk to them about it, and it seems that just talking to Billy won't do it. It's possible this was removed in the UK version because they didn't want Dan yelling at thin air, or perhaps it doesn't work in either version. As I said I'll have to look into it later, and may have to ask someone to send me the US version of Dan's script to see if it's any different.

Thanks, I'll look for it. By the way, if you or anyone else wants a challenge, try unpacking the dat file in the Fallout demo. :)
