Secret Sanya - China's new nuclear naval base revealed
21 April 2008

China is constructing a major underground nuclear submarine base near Sanya, on Hainan Island off its southern coast, Jane's can confirm. Although Asian military sources have disclosed this fact to Jane's since 2002, high-resolution commercially available satellite imagery from DigitalGlobe allows independent verification of the previous suggestions.

The extent of construction indicates the Sanya base (also known as Yulin) could become a key future base for People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) aircraft carriers and other power-projection ships. In December 2007, perhaps in concert with a major PLAN exercise the previous month, the PLA moved its first Type 094 second-generation nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) to Sanya.

An underground submarine base and the positioning of China's most advanced sub-surface combatants at Sanya would have implications for China's control of the South China Sea and the strategically vital straits in the area. Further satellite imagery suggests the construction of Sanya has been supported by a gradual military build-up in the Paracel Islands over the last 20 years, and the transformation of the Chinese-occupied features in the Spratly Island group into assets that could support a range of military operations.

China's nuclear and naval build-up at Sanya underlines Beijing's desire to assert tighter control over this region. China's increasing dependence on imported petroleum and mineral resources has contributed to an intensified Chinese concern about defending its access to vital sea lanes, particularly to its south. It is this concern that in large part is driving China's development of power-projection naval forces such as aircraft carriers and long-range nuclear submarines.

China has pursued this build-up at Sanya with little fanfare, offering no public explanations regarding its plan to base nuclear weapons or advanced naval platforms there.

For both regional and extra-regional powers, it will be difficult to ignore that China is now building a major naval base at Sanya and may be preparing to house and protect a large proportion of its nuclear forces here, and even operate them from this base. This development so close to the Southeast Asian sea lanes so vital to the economies of Asia can only cause concern far beyond these straits.

LOL, assuming they ain't broke after the Olympics and all the contractors for this project didn't take the money for themselves by shoddy workmanship and cheaper materials.

And Sanya is pretty far from Beijing, if the Shanghai camp ever gets pissed off at the Beijing camp long enough, this will probably increase the southern provinces' war assets.

Someone posted this picture here before. This had China angry at Google while the US breathed down their throat angry that they were violating several laws and sanctions of sorts.

Interesting and slightly related. China appears to be preparing for an all out cyber war. Their attacks on government computers have been increasing as of late.

Oops, I don't understand why so many American young men, so care about Chinese military affairs, and hostile to us. <xxx>... you didn't see any crazy war sub your own? And where is the American confidence?

Is that called...worry? In China, the boys in the game forum, or even military forum, they say American is our friends and we should learn more of their culture, science, and new games, respect them also~haha. There's different between us, but we can live in peace. Remember before Japs fought US navy, they said the samething as you... that's <cut> thought way indeed.

Well, don't only stay in your local webs, learn some Chinese, and see some Chinese web site or forum, or you'll far from the develop of the whole world culture, we Chinese try to know your real lives, great culture, for we don't want fall behind the world again. One powerful country is not what polity or millitary they have, see what confidence and an open mind they get. That's my own point.

That has to be the stupidest comparison I've heard this month.

And where is the American confidence?

It's the gringos, man. Most of them are paranoid and on the verge of downright 'crazy'. Don't take it too seriously.

And please, don't compare a few paranoid Yanks to the nazis; it's downright ridiculous.

I don't like China because they steal other people jobs, namely, jobs that could be ocupied by honest Brazilians instead. That turns China into The Enemy. It's Us vs They. For me, Brazil and China CAN'T exist in the same globe. The fact that they are dangerous, unstable communists is just as bad.

I like China. I don't like it's government, ideology, fact that it raped it's own history and violations of human rights as well as the capital punishment and manner in which it is carried out.

This is why communism, as an ideology, is one of the greatest atrocities ever done.

Yes, they deal with corrupt officials with harsh punishment.

Of course their definition of corruption is fairly lax and so can mean many things.

My family hosted some of the first Chinese exchange students.

By american standards, their families were rich. They were also high ranking members of the communist party. Corruption isn't in china? Don't even start.

Whatever~ how you think Chinese...... from capitalism news( of course the two party don't like each other) , from your unemployed men complaining( we welcome Brazilian to our country to "steal" our job, welcome to China), and exchange student ( sorry, some of the student are not work well in their study in China, so...this another way to find job~in the American and best students likes to student American culture either, not only communism family children, I'm not Communist Party member, but I feel happy working here, and if I get more money I'll be exchange student, and see your country greats)

China not Soviet Russia, the capitalism company businessmen and
Communist Party workers all work together well~~woo, hard to believe how can they happy together? But, that has been happen decades and decades in my home country. they just want to live a better live in the future now. At least, you admit that we get more stronger now~ha.

Seems you are interested in China socity and government, why don't you come to China and have a real look. Whatever our government you thought by yourselves, they lead us well, and not attack other country people and welcome they find lives in China.

Hahaha~

gunner of shi you have to understand most people here have nothing against other countries. They have grudge against politicians in these countries. Who are different breed in themselves. Compared to some ehem more vocal countries recently, PR china has been as sleeping tiger. Now the recent event in Tibet might be what caused some of the resentment to crop up.

Oh wow, this thread.

LIEberals should only complain about Iraq if they'd been there.

WAR HERO McCain went there and didn't die, that proves that Iraq is okay.
