Choosing the Right Weapon In Combat

Assuming you use either guns or energy weapons...

Should you use both a scoped rifle and non-scoped rifle as part of your arsenal for medium-long range combat or sniping? When should you use your sidearm? In what kind of situations are rapid fire weapons most effective? Are shotguns better for closer range?

What is the best type of weapon to use for long range combat? Medium range? Close range? Crowd control?

I'm not usually one to say this but your best bet is to just play the game...there are multiple loadouts that work fine, even optimally so--and it does depend partly on your build. You can get by with just about anything really. Just melee weapons, or explosives, or the riot shotgun. So the easier question to answer would be, what shouldn't you use? Low tier weapons, anything thrown honestly. That's basically it.
 
every weapon is viable, including thrown weapons, it literally depends on your perks, weapon playstyle, and your aim. if you're dead on and can remember where the center point is without the crosshairs, even poisoned Throwing spears will kill deathclaws with just a few, well-placed shots. Even the sileneced .22 pistol can kill deathclaws, again, it all depends on your playstyle and your perks you chose throughout the game.
 
It depends on my build, but I like switching to low-AP cost, high crit multiplier weapons in close quarters when I am playing a VATS character.

For non-VATS characters I really like shotguns in CQB. With Shotgun Surgeon, And Stay Back and selfmade munitions they become very strong.
Selfmade munitions like slugs also make shotguns less random in VATS.
 
When ever I'm caught off guard I always result to using the Survivalist's rifle. The base stats of it aren't so great, but it is fairly accurate at medium to long range. With the Bloody Mess and Thought You Died perks, along with Guns Skill:100, I got my damage per shot to be 71.
 
In buildings, riot shotgun and automatic weapons are best.

Outside, scoped weapons are best.
