Chris Avellone says many words

In April, Chris Avellone went to Australia as one of the speakers at Framework, a kind of games industry get-together that is a bit less hype-y than E3 by the look of things. There is now video evidence on YouTube of the man probably talking about Alpha Protocol mostly, but also mentioning Fallout, KotOR and Torment-related stuff. CA appears around 7 minutes into the first clip, and then holds forth in the remaining ten clips. If you make some popcorn it's like a gripping feature film about video game design presentation.

Thanks to Nephilim77.

"Theme, story and character"

a nice summary of what FO3 failed at. Heh, anyway, "beth-hate" aside, it is nice to finally get to know Avellone's voice.

Chris Avellone on canceled Fallout 3 project:

"We could include specific incidences and places where they could shine.

Because ultimately, Fallout like good RPGs was all about rewarding each individual player for their specific char creation choices."

FUCK YOU very much Bethesda, for ruining the Fallout Experience.

Can somebody gather all stuff about Torment and post it here? I don't have time right now to watch all videos.. (ok, i'm just to lazy)

You really get depressed when you think about those two canceled projects, BG3 and FO3..

The mans hatred is indeed a source for some really good game play. However.. The dialogue-samples from Alpha Protocol in the Youtube clips are brimming with cliche! The characters seem like cardboard cutouts, and the game itself, even with the deep character system, doesn't seem that revolutionary.

Oh well, still going to buy AP, if nothing else but further finance real innovation.

Quality spent time. Tnx for info, otherwise I would miss it for sure.

No bullshit introduction much and I really liked it.

Not that I was searching, but I rarely see something as informative as this. On many layers.
For me, as far as I can remember, this, crytek interative level/AI design capabilities [not implementation] and bungie's presentation [and texts] about reasons for their Halo AI/level implementation are the three most noticeable insights in how some of developers function.

As for video clips, a lot of things could be said or discussed about Chris's approach in design [not much speech about things that define RPG genre], but, irony aside, I have a feeling that only handful of developers spend that kind of time in preproduction as they are in i.e. BI F3, which is very... telling.

As for Alpha protocol... I don't know. It's not the problem in mechanic of the game – it could be very innovative and stuff, I'm [as a casual player, I must add] simply sick and tired of killing Nazis [is there one alive any more?], saving worlds, hanging above cliffs, but above all if I play games it's because I don't want to hear about present day problems, especially not about something that you can watch in every damn TV channel...

Imo, that's one of the reasons why I liked fallout universe – it's detached from my experience. And its world is fucked up already, so I'm not to blame myself for a failure...

But, maybe it's just me, and it will be a good thing if that's the case, I would like to see that game becoming a hit.

Meh... If hate is so productive for him, maybe Chris should stick to something what he hates the most, because it seems to me that he likes Alpha protocol universe... But, then again, maybe trigger-happy kids for Beth's kindergarden forums will like it and if that is the price for a success, well I really wish them success, after all imo they deserved it.

Really had great time listening to Chris. Thank you for the link.

I was bummed down when I heard what they had planned for F3. I want original F3 with 12 player multiplayer option :)

Good stuff.

He starts talking about Torment in the 6th video at around 2:40.

He starts talking about the cancelled Fallout 3 project in the 8th video at around 1:00.

The prisoner's dilemma is an interesting idea.
8th video around 9 minutes: I want a shot of that screen!

Well,
for those who are interested about Alpha Protocol, I was searching a little what game is about. It may be better than I previously thought. Although PC feels too generic, his movement somewhat stiff and in some clips robotic, face without any personal characteristic, those are just superficial impressions as game is not finished yet... Dialog system looks interesting though. For "action RPG", at first look, it feels [at least] few levels above some goty games that we know. And...love.

Thanks for the links, but I have a problem. The sound quality on the videos seem low, and I'm hearing impaired, so I can't quite make out what he's saying.
I did a quick search for a transcript of his speech, but can't find anything - does anyone have a link if there is any?
