I've heard the similarities mentioned in the media as well.

If anyone hasn't seen the information (Cho sent out a multimedia manifesto between the two shootings), you can see what is available here.

Well, so far it looks like my best friend's sister knew one of the victims in middle school, which is rather tenuous relation.

I can't understand why universities in the US have campus police ? As I understand it, the campus police are not 'real' policemen like the state police or the policemen (and women) in the Sheriff's office??

On a sidenote, I think that the universities in Europe have long abandoned to have campus police (some might have security guards, though). [Maybe some English universities have campus police, too].

However, I that that qoute from a lawyer says it all: people think that if they report crimes etc. to the campus police that these crimes will get passed on to the correct authorities i.e. the 'real' police. But most of the times, it is not so.

I only hope that this means that people in the US who have been in contact with psych wards etc. will have a much harder time getting legal access to guns&rifles...

Wrong. There are campus policemen here in Poland, same thing in Mexico. And it's exactly the same thing in a lot of other countries.

"Real" policemen aren't allowed to enter and patrol Universities, except on emergencies.

alot of the time its due to size, i know of one school, where the entire town is there because of the school, and they have regular armed police

i don't think we have campus police in Belgium. but that's probably mostly because our universities/colleges are spread out geographically. if you get economics in one building, you can get math in a building across town.
would be kinda useless to have a unified campus police for that.

Campus police- the quality depends on the campus.

When I was doing graduate work in Sacramento, our campus was in one of the worst parts of the city. The cops were all deputies, patrolled the neighborhood, and did busts. A student was shot by a local gangsta while returning to a dorm. The cops came out in force.

As an undergrad at SUNY Stony Brook, all the campus cops were State Troopers- a lot of big ex-marines. I remember having locked the keys in my car and the cop asked if I wanted him to break the window. I am not sure if he was planning to use his fist or his head.

My campus now- UVA, has got a rather odd mix of cops. Some are really good, but I think the crappy salaries leads to less than stellar cops.

So it depends on the campus, where its located and how seriously it takes crime.

Why have cops on campus-
here's a list of shootings-

And they don't just happen in the good ole USA-

Well, it seems to be a trend. Apperantly someone has started shooting in the nasa headquarter just now. Probably another looser.
