Climate change returns!

In 1995 the International Panel on Climate Change issued a report which contained various projections of the sea level change by the year 2100. They estimate that the sea will rise 50 centimeters (20 inches) with the lowest estimates at 15 centimeters (6 inches) and the highest at 95 centimeters (37 inches). [...] 20 inches is no small amount -- it could have a big effect on coastal cities, especially during storms.

So, if I get this right: we are not going to drown, but our children's children's children might?
Wow! As if these kids won't have enough other problems by that time: the world will be even more overpopulated than now, they will have no more fossil fuels, drinkable water will be rarer and more expensive with each passing year...

Hell, I say: just don't make kids and everything should be alright! :P

You forgot about the turnips again, Blade. Diz izz bikomink most annoyink.

There's a hell of a lot on land in Antartica and while the rise of sea levels might not be super dramatic, countries like Holland, Bangladesh and coastal cities in general will probably be fucked.
Any country with a large amount of coastline will have major problems.
Holland and Bangladesh would not just be fucked, they would pretty much cease to exist.

(The only upside to rising sea levels is that London is fairly low-lying and will be fairly high on the danger list.
/hates London)

Yeah, the difference between Holland and Bangladesh being that the Dutchies would afford extremely expensive measures to keep the water out, whereas Bangladesh's population will have to find a new home, in some neighbouring country.

Make that "have placed" instead of "afford", and you're right. :P

You have placed measures to keep the current water levels out, but I doubt they'd cope that well with any significant rise in sea level.
It's not like you could put your thumbs in all the holes.

Actually, IIRC, we can take a rise in sea level of a couple of metres. At least in the Zeeland area.

Plus, putting thumbs in holes doesn't work, you know. :P

Not when it's coming over the top.
No, it doesn't work at all. The water would just make the hole larger, as it always does.
Why the hell am I discussing this?

Depends what the material that the dyke/dam is made of and the pressure of the water. They're soil topped with turf aren't they? At least that's what I thought the old ones were. I'm sure the newer defences are a bit more rugged than that. In which case, the water would erode the surrounding material.
If the hole was in a concrete dam, then, providing the pressure isn't too high and the seal is tight, it would hold for a while.
**Realises he knows sod all about dykes**

I don't know.

true. Then again, getting a hole in a concrete dam which is undoubtedly a few meters thick would be quite an achievement. :P
I don't know.
And why are you doing it?

I was talking metaphorically.
It's not very likely that the hole would be the right size for a thumb to block either.
