Combat skills in FO3

You know that nanotech Dragon Tooth sword from Deus Ex? I imagine Shi would develop something like that. But who knows where and when Fallout 3 will take place - maybe there won't be San Fran in the first place.

I'd imagine the Shi developing more traditional Chinese weapons. And if they didn't use them in combat they'd most definitely use them for celebrations.

You expect a bunch of people who's ancessors came from a submarine to know how to develop traditional Chinese weapons? Riiiiight. They were military grunts, so they shouldn't even have known how to develop technology in the first place.

And you don't think they had a Propaganda Officer?

Ever since Mao died, the Chinese have stepped toward an increasingly nationalist movement. They fortify this nationalism by emphasizing an appreciation of their culture and heritage, a fact symbolized by the repairing of the Great Wall.

You're forgetting that Mao didn't rule until way after the 1950's era, so the Chinese Nationalistic movements are irrelevant.

Seeing how the Chinese are the Reds in the game, I'd say it's safe to assume that Mao did usurp power in the Fallout universe as well. Even so, I highly doubt that a propaganda officer would have Swordsmithing 101 as a required part of their training.

Thank you Azael for also saying that there's no way that these dudes would be learning how to forge traditional Chinese sword weaponry when they're going to be training for and conducting modern submarine warfare.

And even if they had taken Swordsmithing 101 at their local community college, it would still take a master at the craft to make any decent weaponry like in ancient times.

And yes, it would be fun to encounter such a party, but it already happened in a Fallout game. You know, when you met those commie Canadians! :P

Its science-fiction. Everything doesn't have to make sense.

I don't see how they couldn't "re-invent" some method of sword-smithing to re-create traditional Chinese weaponry. Especially if they felt the need to have a better sense of identity.

It took 1500 years before people re-discovered how to make concrete like the Romans.

I think there are arguments to be made all the way around. It's not that having swords isn't feasible. Rather, it's that having swords isn't part of the "feel" of the Fallout games. ...And that we wouldn't have swords of the same quality we'd expect in a high fantasy RPG with a tradition of crafting swords. Since the sword would probably be shoddy, and since they don't fit the setting, I'd think they should just put swords in with knives.

The thing is, Sawyer already said Van Buren will only have three combat skills. That means, by default, not only are swords grouped with knives, they're also grouped with super sledges and rippers and heaven knows what else. That means the inclusion of swords really is nothing more than the graphics and flavor text. We might as well call them "somewhat long edged weapons" and be done with it.

Bradylama! You heretic! swords dont fit Fallout! This aint no japanise anime scifi rpg with swords and mechas! (I bet he was going to suggest mechas next.)
:violent:

Seriously no swords. maby some long matchets or what are those long "jungle knifes" called.

Though I do enjoy those types of RPGs, that has nothing to do with why I wanted swords.

I was hoping the inclusion of some kind of sword-like weapons would help balance out the Melee Weapons in comparison to firearms and unarmed.

no swords should exist in the game except in the form of a machete or jungle knife. That is all.

I'd rather see people make bows out of mutated yew and try to perfect the art of spear and javelin making, things that might actually come in handy in the everyday life in the wasteland. Besides, spears and pole arms are cooler than swords.

You lost me on that one, Azael. Other than spears, pole arms would be less useful in everyday life and it's not exactly a good weapon to use out of formation, is it? A spear is one thing. You can make the argument that it's easier to hunt with it. ...But there's a reason swords were so popular throughout history. They are a rather effective weapon.

Where we find agreement is in the "everyday life" issue. Folks that early out of the Fallout will need things. You can fight with a sword, but you can fight and feed yourself with a spear. That's why I think we'd see a lot more spears, bows and arrows, and other multi-task items.

Yes, but I'm practical. If I were fighting a war in medieval times, I'd be a hell of a lot more scared of a group of Swiss halberdiers than a group of swordsmen. In Japan, katanas were used for close quarter fighting, but skills with the yari and naginata were extremely valuabe on the battlefield. In general, I think swords are overrated in these days, probably due to the various swashbuckling flicks.
