Combat skills in FO3

J.E. Sawyer and Avellone have both seen SSS. I still want to see it.

As for the difficulty in making a sword, I think that depends on the type of sword. If you're looking to make a long sword, katana, broad sword, etc., you've got your work cut out for you. But taking a steel bumber off of a car, hammering it flat, cutting it into the shape of a machete and using a powered grinding tool to make a sharp edge would be quite withing the grasp of a post apocalyptic setting. After a while, people might even figure out how to balance the sword. But, even without balance, it'd be sharp enough to cut into a man. Due to its weight it'd probably sink in about half way and get stuck in a bone. But, since a man with a sword stuck in one of his vertebrate probably isn't going to be shooting back or making a called shot to your eyes, I'd say that the sword is made well enough.

Well, and I would be scared of english archers more than a group of anything else (considering I would be far enough not to be shooted with some havy crossbow of course) if we're speaking of medival times. :)

True, making a sword isn't that hard, it's making a good one that causes you trouble, but then again what do I know, I'm not a smith nor a metallurgist and my objections against swords are more on the "philosophical" level. I'm all for makeshift weapons, though.

The only thing with the Swiss Halberdier idea is that...

1) That was a weapon design that said something about the times in which it was made.

and, more importantly

2) That it was not a weapon to be used in one on one fighting.

Like I said, I agree with you about spears. I think the idea of seeing a masterwork katana should be remote indeed. ...But I do think that edged weapons along the lines that Briareus mention make some sort of sense. I'd just, rather than swords, that they be called machetes or pig sticker or heaven knows what else.

Really big knives? I'm sure they could work in a Crocadile Dundee reference if you started a knife/sword fight somewhere. =P Or maybe an Untouchables reference.

"Just like a Tribal to bring a knife to a gunfight."

If I find a Crocodile Dundee reference in Fallout 3, I'll uninstall the game that minute! :P

I read a post by someone in the BIS forums that referred to the immense number of katanas brought home by American GI's after WWII. This really makes more sense than having post-apoc tribes forging swords. I mean, its not like post-apoc tribes are forging H&K CAWS either...

It could be as rare as the ripper, do less damage to armored opponents, but use no energy cells so it fills a niche, and not to mention makes your character look like a badass...
