First time out of the vault
Ok, I've been playing tactics recently on tough guy mode, and am finding the frequent crashes cause frequent headaches. It doesn't even matter if I can beat the mission, just if I can beat it without crashing. It wasn't so much of a problem when I could save in missions, but I've already beaten the game that way and wanted to try tough guy out. And yes, I'm aware I can just not play tough guy mode or edit every mission as a bunker, but I would like, if at all possible, play tough guy normally without all the damn crashes. Anyway, my question is, what are all the things I can do to prevent these frequent crashes. They come at any point and time. So far all I've done is disabled 3D sound. I'm running it with the most recent official patch (1.27 I believe) and one mod- one that allows you choose a different race for your main character. The reason I'm not putting this in the modding forum is because I do not believe this mod would cause crashes, and regardless I have played the game without that mod and it still crashes just as frequently. Here are some system specs:

Windows XP
2.133 Ghz AMD Athlon
512 MB DDR SDRAM
64 MB DDR SDRAM NVIDIA GeForce MX video card
DirectX 9.0c

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I replayed FOT two months ago and it's not uncommon for the game to crash, especially during long sessions. It happened to me as well and I don't think there's much you can do about it, really. It's a buggy game with a huge memory leak problem, so playing it in Tough Guy Mode is kinda sorta at your own risk.
If these crashes are really frequent, you might want to try a reinstall whilst praying for a miracle.

Yeah, I was afraid that was the case. Your right, it does seem like the longer the session, the more frequent the crashes, though that doesn't make much sense to me cuz I installed the full game onto my pc, so it couldn't be a cd problem... uggh its like I have to play each mission four times because it crashes at some point the first three times, no exaggeration. I could try reinstalling again, but I did that less than a week ago, still the same bullshit. I think trying out Tough Guy Mode was not such a good idea afterall.

There's not a lot you can do, my personal theory is that it's the overlapping tiles that are partly to blame. That combined with the memory leak problem and the long playing time for tough guy campaigns equals crashing.

Probably all you can do is break up your sessions, make sure you save on entering and leaving a bunker and use plenty of seperate save slots. If the game does crash or if you've completed a couple of missions succesfully save and call it a night. Perhaps when you reach the middle of the game defrag your drive.

Well, thank you both. Hopefully that'll minimize the crashes. Either that or Tough Guy Mode is out for me.

I had problems with crashes too. I've returned my copy to a store and got my money back.
