Crashing Fallout I - Cathedral level 3

OK. Fixed. Merged.

Oh, you could search the forum, there's a lot of threads abbout this problem already.

Also, more specs about your system could help.

A few tips before you post topics again:

- Read the stickies. They are there for a reason. And follow their advice and guidelines.
- Do a forum search.
- Mention everything that may somehow be of relevance, including what you did and did not try.

Come back when you've got this figured out, okay?

Pity, I would have Vatted this because it could be easily fixed within five minutes. That includes searching, reading, and fixing said problem. That, of course, relies on the assumption that said person bothered to read the rules, FAQs, and stickies first.

dwwin.exe - Application Error

Does that even REMOTELY look like a Fallout file? I have a suspicion it's causing a number of other things to not work correctly, either, yet it doesn't hold the responsibility for the simian on the keyboard. That is your responsibility, TF.

Well said executable is windows doctor watson error reporting tool ... so it makes sense that its not a fallout file ... all other issues aside.

As I said before fixed withing five minutes, and that's assuming zero computer experience. Anyone who runs a game and Dr. Watson together, or Dr. Watson at all, is an IDIOT. True, not all know about how shit that program is and how it fucks with other programs, but if a program that isn't the core executable gives you problems, you might want to look up said program and issues around it.

Common sense, much like having no power and checking your battery connection for a car.

*feels like an idiot*

Fuck! That might have been my problem too...

I can't believe I overlooked that, I used to have DW disabled permanently, but had to reformat, and forgot to disable it again.

I have the same problem and I would just like people to know that I have fixed it.

It has nothing to do with Dr. Whatever and it is not the too many items glitch, as I have tested.

I don't know what causes the error, but I was able to fix it thanks to the post made by Scampi. When mine crashed, all I saw was a black screen and that there was an application error on falloutw.exe, but I couldn't get it drawn. I took the address on Scampi's post and did a little debugging. I didn't try to read what the address does, but I found a little jump over it so I reassembled it so that it hops over the call and I now have level 3!

Hope that helps.

To be frank, I think the people who can confidently hexedit the exe (or whatever is required) based on that info and get it to work are easily numbered.

I would also like to note that those who had a problem with Dr. Watson would still likely have it due to the fact that the addresses between both problems (since the thread was merged together) are different. The fix, however, might work on those who have a cleaner environment.

Sorry to bug everyone with a complaint/screams for help on my first post, but what maps do I need to change? I can't seem to find the maps for the cathedral lair. Any help would be really appreciated.

Edit: I found the maps and everything, and changed them, still no dice.

Could you or someone else explain this further?

I cannot finish Fallout because everytime I try to take the elevator to the 3rd floor of the underground cathedral (The master's lair?) the game looks like it's trying to load something (a cursor with a planet and a rocket orbiting it appears) then the screen goes black and I hear an error sound; I can't see what kind of error it is as the only way I'm able to exit the game is via control+alt+Delete.

I've tried disabling Dr. Watson with no luck so any help would be greatly appreciated.

A thorough explanation, as described in the stickies, would be even more appreciated at this point, I would think.

I tried all of the fixes described in the stickies before posting. The game still crashes everytime I try to take the elevator to the 3rd floor. It also crashes when I try to see the master via morpheus.

Could someone please explain Lemmin's post? I assmue I need a hex editor and locate the address detailed in Scampi's post but beyond that I don't know what else I have to do.

*ahem* Stickies. Plural. Read them. As Rosh said, provide the info.

As for Lemmins' post, it requires you to understand assembly. If you don't, then you really shouldn't try doing anything.

Sorry.

System:

OS: Windows XP home edition
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 dual core processor 3800
Memory: 1GB Ram
Sound: SoundMax HD audio
Video card: Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT
Direct X version: Direct X 9.0c

The current version of fallout I'm running is patched with the 1.2 semi-offical patch, I updated from version 1.0 to 1.1 to 1.2 hoping it would help.

Problem: I've experienced no crashing or glitches (except for the ocassional invisible black armoured mutants) until I try to take the elevator to the third floor of the cathedral lair. At this point, the loading cursor appears and the screen goes black, I can hear an error sound and the game stops working.

I am fairly certain the problem relates to a sound file. I couldn't find anything on the forums, but I am sure I had the same issue, and fixed it by substituting another file.

I believe it may be 08vats.acm, since I got a file named "08vats.acm.old" in my musicp folder and I probably replaced the original one with 06vault.acm.

Fallout 1 inescapable crash.

I have been working to fix this for the past four hours. I have tried every method listed on this site and others...nothing works.

The game worked flawlessly right up until I get to vault in the cathedral. As soon as I try to go to level 3 in elevator, the game crashes. (blackout, crash to desktop)

The one method I hadn't tried prior to coming here was disabling my video card (nvidia 7950 GTKO). Unfortunately, when I do that, the game doesn't work. It gets past the intro, goes green, and then crashes.

I am absolutely desparate. This actually happened to me last time I played Fallout and prevented me from completing it, and I had totally forgotten about it. When it happened the first time (five or six years ago), there was not a single piece of hardware on my computer that I am using today.

I tried using a friend's copy of the game (clean install, copied the save file), and the same thing happened.

Please help!

Goddamnit...I was just about to delete my thread. I did do a search beforehand, but I didn't use the right keywords.

arggggggggghhh this is driving me insane

*shakes fist at third floor*

Oh, and I unpacked the master.dat file, but there were no .map files. Only .frm and .mve ones.

Although, like someone else said in this thread, I don't think this would help. None of my save files have "CHILDRN3.SAV" because I haven't been there yet.

Of course, I'm a damn n00b so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

I also replaced the sound file mentioned a few posts back with the one from the CD, but that didn't work either.
