DBZ

I think you forgot the "crashing against mountains" part in the fight scenes.

Yes i figured out what they were when the other admin guy put one of my posts in there because it was to late.

And the fact that the stroyline is of multiple episodes is why people watch it, decently made anime fight scenes are the best part of the game.

No, you figured it out when Malkavian explained it to your clueless ass. Yet again you're caught in a lie.

If you think that DBZ has "decently made anime fight scenes", you haven't seem SHIT. Wait, no, you have. And you like it.

For fuck's sake, Tenchi Muyo has better fight scenes, rare as they are, mainly because they aren't all 3 frames of animation cycled over one another as filler.

And, there are better anime with stories that span multiple episodes...that actually offer some content than imbelices spouting stupid shit at each other as no animation whatsoever goes on (I notice that DBZ is FULL of "timesaver shots" of many seconds while characters blather useless dialog that generally gets cut so episodes can be merged) while recycling animation for the fight scenes, and that is pretty much the whole episode.

Ah, good point. It is never "decently made anime fight scenes" unless you count the repetitious recycling of characters being smacked into the same rubble pattern they just smacked their opponent into.

DBZ fans ==> 0

I must say, I am a bit surprised that Richoid seems to be lasting so long.

Because I watch a bit of anime but don’t know much about it, I asked Kotario to point me in the right direction to find quality stuff by PM a while ago. He never responded and I didn’t remind him as I wasn’t that interested. This thread actually mentions a lot of titles I haven’t seen that are said to be good, which is useful. I trust the taste of people here on NMA a lot more than random fans I don’t know. Eventually I hope to see what you recommend, if I am still in the mood for this type of entertainment.

Listed below is all the anime I can remember seeing, in order from best to worst. Just my uneducated opinion, but it still might be useful for those new to anime.

Must see:
All Miyazaki, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Akira, GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka), Samurai Champloo

Worth seeing:
Helsing, Gunsmith Cats mini-series, Ghost in the Shell, Love Hina, Patlabor, Beserk, Full Metal Panic, Spriggan, Vampire Hunter D, Getbackers

Too childish or poor:
Robotech, Technoman, Ninja Scroll film, Excel Saga, Full Metal Alchemist film, Faith Stay Night, Naruto, Bleach, Dear Boys, Pokemon, DBZ

Have you seen the oustanding Lupin film, Castle of Cagliostro, which Miyazaki directed Rosh? Are the original/related series anywhere near as good? I would guess that the episodes he directed would be excellent, but not necessarily the others.

Another anime question: What is WORSE than DBZ? I am not aware of any anime that bad, but I only have limited knowledge. Please give a description if such a creature exists.

Too many to name, all of those countless "coming of age" stories that otherwise have no plot. The sappy and crappy softcore teenage girl shit that otherwise nobody could be interested in.

Speaking of which - Sailor Moon.

There's a good number of romantic comedies and magical girl stories that are basically full of shit.

That DBZ is considered a "Mediocre Anime" should be an indicator of the overall amount of quality in the media.

Also, if I might interject, they're currently doing an OAV based directly on the Hellsing manga. Why should one bother watching it one might ask? Nazi vampires, that's why.

Also, expect my Gundam follow up tomorrow. I went with my cousin and his wife to see Thank You For Smoking after work. Excellent movie, by the way. A good watch if you want to see something clever that doesn't come off as pretentious.

Sorry, something I put aside to do later (so I could do it comprehensibly), and completely forgot about. Though since you don't appreciate Excel Saga, may you burn in hell and have the devil stick his pitchfork up your bottom. Excel Saga is a rather interesting example, because in my expierence, people either love it or hate it. One way it might fail is because of the constant references to other anime (and the creators work them in well; the more recent Pani Poni Dash [I love Studio SHAFT's intros though] I find throws in meaningless references, which fall rather flat).

'ah, Hellsing, that ever so slick, stylish work. It's a shame they didn't wait until later with the TV series, so they had more of the manga's story to work with (but the first half is good fun). You have to love Hellsing (Zeppelins, Nazis, Vampires, Evil Catholics; all the good things in life).

Well, if you really have to firebomb a city, what else could you do?

This really speaks for itself.

Edit: :P I forget about what large images do to smaller resolutions.

This looks like a good place to ask: Is FLCL any good? I randomly saw an episode at 5am one day over a year ago while I was getting ready for work and it was so incredibly bizarre that I still remember it. I put it on my netflix queue but I keep bumping it down because frankly anime scares me. Anyone seen it and have an opinion?

Well, it is only six episodes, so it is easy to watch in a single sitting (if you have all of the episodes on hand, damn two episode DVDs and all those involved in such abominations).

Basically, did you like the episode you saw? The bizarreness of the series is rather off-putting. FLCL is widely recognized as layered (and I recommend watching it more than one, concentrating on different aspects). There is the bizarre/comedic element, which is most apparent, and the coming of age story (one of the best ever). All of it comes together beautifully however, and aside from my recommendation on that point, practically requires multiple viewings.

It is a work of genius, one of the best in its genre; but a difficult one for all to appreciate. I don't instantly recommend it, because of its difficulties. Here; I say go for it Montez, I believe you will get the best parts of it.

By the way, if you want to understand the Daicon joke, there is this gem (pardon the quality, but due to a turbulent history and sheer age, there isn't anything better available) from early in GAINAX's career. One of the most famous anime studios, they are the creators of FLCL and Neon Genesis Evangelion among other important works.

Although I did obviously miss a lot of the references in Excel, that isn't why I was unimpressed by it. It had its moments, but it was usually just not funny. Consistently better writing was needed to counterbalance the randomness. I found that little Daicon IV clip and its history more entertaining and interesting than the Saga.

In a way I could be lucky that the mainstream anime on SBS (our ethnic channel) seems to be well chosen. I remember now that they used to show Sailor Moon here on another TV station but I never saw it and never will.

Foolie Coolie is perhaps one of the oddest, funniest, and most bizarre of the "mindfuck sci-fi" genre of anime series. I was thrilled when they had it played on Cartoon Network.

Personally, I think the music playing when the cosmic asswhuppin' starts to get interesting is some of the best in any anime to date. Favorite character, the Vespa girl, of course. Kanchi is a close runner-up, just because of when he flips the fuck out, giant sloppy holes appear in the landscape that appears mysteriously like a hand...and an iron, and then you realize that not even all the drugs in the world nor 4too could help you understand all of the weird shit going on. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the Un chien andalou of some general pop culture anime with a bit of bizarre thrown in. If you want the Un chien andalou of anime porn, that would instead be Chôjin densetsu Urotsukidôji.

As for another in the mindfuck genre, Paranoia Agent is most excellent.

Lil' Slugger is coming for you!

Kotario: Link those damn pics, bitch! :D

To throw my half a cent: I have a few series watched, but nothing much over that. The series are NGE, Hellsing (for obvious reasons), Trigun (gotta love the setting), Noir and Love Hina.

Oh, and I used to watch DBZ. Now, after watching more worthwile titles, I can safely say that DBZ...

DISC: It's a shot from one episode apparently.

Forgot to mention, Fooly Cooly is the sole reason my brother owns a Vespa.

...and that Furi Kuri is notable (among other things) for it's music. Very nicely done.

Roshambo, have you seen Dead Leaves? It might be on the lighter side of mindfuck country, or perhaps not. I'm not a great judge myself. It's the result of giving a director who basically directs fight sequences in other peoples work, and ask him to direct a full hour OVA. Pretty manic and... colorful. Not to mention one of the main characters has a TV for a head (and one of the secondary characters has a drill for a dick and a penchant for sodomy).

I saw some bits of DBZ when it was first on CN, but I didnt really follow it, seemed interesting though. Then a couple of years ago I got the proper subbed, uncut version and I thought it was decent until the Cell saga, which was just a bland copy of the Freeza saga...
It was fun the first time when the enemy was almost beaten only to have morph into a more powerful form, but to see that happen again and again isn't. I still sat through it hoping it would get better and I did enjoy the little Super Saiyaman filler, but when after that the most evil and powerful being in the universe turned out to be an obese, retarded, pink blob who fought by turning his enemies into candy I had enough.

Quick 10/10 ratings:
Saiyan Saga: 6
Freeza Saga: 7
Garlic Jr filler: 1
Andriod Saga: 4
Cell Saga: 5
Saiyaman filler: 7
Buu Saga: -12

Lately I've been watching more anime and I'm glad to see there's a lot of good stuff out there now although it's hard to find between all the generic magical girl/mecha drek.

Here's some shows of various genres I enjoyed:

Genshiken
Full Metal Panic (especially Fumoffu! and TSR)
Kannazuki no Miko
Elfen Lied
Maria-sama ga Miteru
Jin-Roh, The Wolf Brigade
Saikano
Serial Experiments Lain
Mai Hime
Azumanga Daioh
Ichigo Mashimaro

And FLCL, Excel Saga and Samurai Champloo are on my must see list=)

I got into DBZ when I found the Dragonball Evolution MUD(The best mud out at the time) and I followed it a little when freeza and gohan(goku, whatever) were fighting and that planet destroyed.

Thank you Mani, for reminding me. As long as we are on the topic of mindfuck anime, Elfen Lied presents itself as a strong candidate. With extravagant violence (including the memorable dismemberment of various people), a bipolar tone, amazingly depressing subplots, and high production values; I wonder how it slipped my mind earlier.

Of course, the best way to judge such a series is by watching it. So, on that note, I present the first seven and a half minutes of Elfen Lied (not safe for work or the squeamish).
