Hm, this sounds the right place to get some hints.

I'm not a veteran, neither military, and not even a recruit, but...

I was thinking about raising some money, going to France when I graduate, and trying to join the Foreign Legion. Then there I'd get my French fluent probably, know places, do things like learning to shoot, increase my physical aptitude, etc. I think it's quite an experience. I've always had interest in military life, but it never really interested me here in Brazil, because I'd have to stop my studies. Now, if I join the legion, I can halt my studies for 5 years, and then start over again. Plus, I'd already have my economy diploma.

I'd save a good part of my legion wages then for when finishing my 5 year term, because I plan to join Sorbonne and study sociology there, in France (serving in the legion for three years makes you a French citizen)

So, how bad is this idea?

Just so you know. Getting into the legion is no cakewalk. Alot of people are rejected every year. It is a very elite group of soldiers. I would suggest learning atleast some french before going and start training that physical condition. And start running alot. Not jogging..running.

well, I have lots of years (4) before trying.
I'll start french classes next year, that's not a problem. And training my physical condition don't seems a bad idea. But yeah, I heard it's pretty hard to get in there, harsh training, etc.

Crap, why would you 'study' to be in the legion? All the people i've met that joined the Legion "got out" before the 5 year mark. All you'll get is shot in the face or macheted by some african dude youv'e got no quarrel with. It might be fun, but it would be wiser to join your own countrys military, no?

The french wikipedia page says one candidate in six has been accepted in 2006.
So you better prepare a backup plan in case you're rejected.

Granted they may have changed their standards, but keep in mind you still might be serving with crazy mercenarys/war criminals on the run and other types of unsavorys as well.

Nothing sounds better to a man on the run like a new identity.

I just want to say, NMA is probably one of the most unique and intelligent communities I've ever stumbled upon.

I don't think I'll ever run across another board where someone plans on joining the French Legion.

yes, the Legion (not the caesar one) changed from a we-take-it-all to a very specialiced and highly trained army and they also dont see as much action like in the past anymore like with the French colonialism like during the 50s and 60s. I doubt that france could handle another Battle of Dien Bien Phu anyway. While the Legion sees action (they have been in the Iraq wars I think) its not the same kind of size as in the past anymore. As said all pretty specialiced.

I considered at some point to get to the legion, my physical limits are pretty high and I do a lot of sport (martial arts) so while I am sure the training there would push me to my limits I tend to "believe" I might be able to deal with it, eventually (well you never know unless you tried it). But ... since I am wearing glasses I gave up on that thought. THough maybe at some point I get my eyes fixed and will try it. Doing some vacation in France, trying to get in, if they reject me simply going back home. But to get inside the legion is damn hard, they demand a lot physicaly.

Only gone through the military service of my country so can't say anything about the legion, or being in a war zone. At one point I thought about joining the legion but let's just say that my studies that I have completed point to a pretty different direction.

I would think that the legion is quite demanding and not just physically. To be able to function as a single, cohesive military unit is difficult even for people coming from the same nation, let alone from around the planet.

Stay safe Carib.

Yeah, that was just a thought. I mean, if I could get in, it would be a great experience, as a man I think. But, 5 years is quite a lot of time. I still have to think more about that hahah.

And yes, of course, I would have a second plan in case I got rejected. I'd never bet all my chips in a single move in this case haha.

By the way what would be considered the best modern battle tank currently in existence? Below is a rather impressive lump of metal. The T-28 super heavy tank - USA.
