A sad remnant of the Soviet Era... The USA had a ship ready to help out only something like 200 miles away from that sub, just waiting for word from the Russian government to let them help, and this was at the time the sub actually went down.
Pride should never be a factor when your countrymen are on the line.
One thing nice about the USA is that they will help out *any* country that requests aid, unconditionally. Whether or not that country requests the aid is another matter.
