Doom 4 anyone?!

It's very easy to objectively list major differences between games like Doom, Serious Sam and The Darkness for example. Whether you like or dislike these differences/ changes is entirely subjective of course.

I enjoyed the Serious Sam series and still play through the first SS with friends from time to time. I have yet to play SS3 but I plan on picking it up when it goes on sale.

Yeah, but do you think Serious Sam is a better series than Doom? I think Doom has the advantage of being a much better game as far as atmosphere is concerned, whether it be Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, or even Doom 64. Serious Sam and Darkness don't even compare to Doom IMO. Like you said though, it's just an opinion. I didn't care for Serious Sam 2 at all. I don't think it's all nostalgia either because Doom still holds up today. I would rather play Doom 2 than Darkness, FEAR, Halo, or CoD.

I just hope if they do make Doom 4 that it is better than Doom 3. I liked the old demons better personally. I want to see the Mancubus, Spider Mastermind, Revenant, and Arch-Vile again. I don't remember seeing them in Doom 3. I may be wrong though. They should focus on making the enemies more numerous and varied. I want to see thirty enemies ambushing me whenever I trigger a trap like in the old games. The original game would seriously fuck you over on the harder difficulties. The mods were great too. That is why Doom stuck around for so long. They had a healthy mod community. Other than Doom I would like a decent Quake sequel too. Oh, and a Duke Nukem game that doesn't suck.

Nope, it's an ok shooter but the huge "arena" like levels and waves of enemies in SS and Painkiller are not really my favourite type of gameplay . Also the "humour" and style don't really click with me.

Doom 1 and 2 on the other hand never get old, I feel the urge to replay those at least once a year.

I really hope id goes back to "basics" with D4 but that will probably never happen.

The creatures you list are in D3 (except for the Spiderdemon) but (some) look completely different and they all look pretty bland imo:

Yeah you are right. I didn't even remember them because they were so stupid looking. The revenant was ok, but the other ones looked awful. I hated the monster designs for Doom 3. God they are horrible to look at. Now that I think of it, I disliked most of the creatures. The imps looked ok I guess. The old brown ones always looked weird anyway, but the Pinky demons sucked hard. Doom 3 should have been a lot more enjoyable than it was. I didn't play the expansion, but I assume it was the same.

One thing that they should totally do is being able to increase the speed at which the player walks. Simply flashing down the corridor like in Doom was something that made the game endless fun, unlike a lot of modern games where you end up walking for ages.

Yes, that's one thing that's completely different in modern shooters, the player character now moves like an 80 year old asthmatic. I'm not sure what's the reasoning behind this design.

I think Halo started the fad. I noticed that as soon as Halo came out IIRC. I remember commenting on how slow Halo felt. Maybe I'm wrong.

Slow movement fits in a game like Thief for example because it helps create a sense of tension and possibly fear. I never understood the desire to make otherwise tough marines or other action FPS PC move at a snail pace.

(I never played Halo)

Mancubus...Revenant....

Both of those are in Doom 3. The furthest they got with the Spider Mastermind was some concept art and renders. For some reason they went with a retread of a Quake 1 monster, the Vore.

Despite it's many flaws, I still prefer Doom 3 over Half Life 2. Maybe I'm more of a sucker for the dark Aliens-inspired environments and horror of Doom 3 over the big bland Michael Bay inspired action of HL2. I definitely want Doom 4 to go back to its roots, though.

Serious Sam 2 doesn't exist. There's only SS:FE, SS:SE and SS:BFE. (Yeah SS2 is that bad). But Doc is right, it's about the preference for open-air versus closed corridor shooters. SS series takes more after Unreal, which started moving the emphasis away from cramped labyrinthine corridors.

IIRC, the first Halo is still okay. The later ones are kind of slow - probably because it's problematic to respond to fast-moving targets with the imprecise console controls. Though I's say the "fad" came more from the "realistic" military shooters.

I have no time for ID anymore - I'll stick with ZDoom. It's the old Doom with all love with a few extra delights.

How did I fucking miss this!? Wasn't there one that updated the graphics for the Doom games? I think it was called Doom Legacy...

^ Yeah I have heard of those. I am considering trying ZDaemon for Doom online. Has anyone tried it out?

Edit: I have now! I am loving ZDaemon! I can finally get my old school Doom fix. I have to tell my friends about this. Time to frag some fuckers. :D

Don't forget to try out your other idtech1 favourites with ZDoom ;)

I recently had a blast replaying Heretic and Hexen that way.

I loved those games. A buddy and I worked our way through Hexen during a long weekend when it first came out. It was just as enjoyable as Doom, if not better really.

I hooked our highschool up with a Quakenet LAN back in the day. We had a lot of fun before the principal saw a reference to Satan and made us take it off the computers. It lasted for a few weeks though! After that we installed Hexen 2, which wasn't much better, but we managed to conceal the evil messages, so we could play it without worries. I found myself scrambling to complete assignments just so we could jump on the computer and deathmatch. One of our teachers even hosted a LAN tournament on a "Movie Day". It lasted for a few weeks before teachers got tired of us asking to get on the computer. I miss those days.

Hehe, I remember my mother complaining about the violence in Wolfenstein and my father because my brother and me were always occupying his 386.

A few years later we were allowed to use the school's computer room during lunch breaks.
I remember pressing the - key while playing Carmageddon to conceal the peds and the blood whenever a teacher approached. 8-)

The first MP game I ever played was Doom 2 at a friends place. Good times.

That's like starting your 'drinking career' with Dom Perignon, it doesn't get much better IMO.
