Downtimes

Brother None

This ghoul has seen it all
Orderite
You may have noticed NMA was down for a handful of hours earlier today. Our server, Old Stalwart, decided to give up the ghost and just collapsed wholesale due to the rather large amount of traffic we've been getting lately. It is possible we'll see sporadic downtimes in the coming few days as ourr move to a new server gets sorted out. A few minor errors may pop up and we're addressing them as we find them, please report any problem you have via our contact form.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering why I couldn't seem to connect this morning. Hope the transition goes well.

I can't believe these amateurs put up the site in this stage. Obviously it needed a zero day patch or at least a team of techies working around the clock on it. This site is BROKEN on every platform it can be accessed in, to an inexcusably amateurish level.

Who do these guys think they are, anyway? Next time try insulting me less by making sure your site works before shoving it into my face, assholes.

Dude.

The rather large amount of traffic this site has been getting lately = Pope Viper :D

Does this cost you guys money, having this fixed and all?

I would imagine it's part of the hosting agreement they provide tech support, such as it is.

I would be more than happy to provide a co-lo site for NMA.

:P

No, not a thing. The traffic means we need a new server but it also means added revenue for AtomicGamer/UGO. I'm fairly sure they'll manage to keep the deal profitable on their side but they've been very good on upgrading our server when needed - we didn't actually ask for a server upgrade this time around, they just decided it was needed.

I will never understand the internets or, let's just say, advertising in general.

My brain just sees it like this: someone is hosting this site for free. In return, they ask you guys to host some advertisements. They get paid for putting these advertisements on the sites they host. The more revenue these sites get, the more money the advertisers pay the guys who are hosting these sites. Right?

BUT: who clicks those advertisements? I, for one, never do a thing like that. And frankly, I don't think they influence me one bit.

I don't get how that can be making profit for the guys who want to put up advertisements. It sounds like a huge loss to me. The only one who benefits from this - in this case - seems to be AtomicGamer/UGO.

But I'm glad it makes sites like this possible. That I mean.

Also: sorry if I don't get it. I'm dumb.

And I thought it was because Per posted another round-up and someone just couldn't stand it and decided to blow up the site in some sort of suicidal act :p

Is there a specific ETA on the new servers? Inquiring minds want to know.

No ETA on when we're moving from our current temporary server to our new permanent home, no. ASAP, basically, but the guys are pretty swamped. We'll see.

I sometimes click the ads when another one of those UGO "hot babes" advertisements shows up. Those are always enticing.

Ads are pretty hard to make money from since the internet bubble crashed. Most of our ads are actually UGO's own ads AFAIK, and I'd guess the google ads we have on the frontpage are pretty good for finance (google ads are generally better at targeting the right people).

Anyway, I certainly don't worry about who clicks the ads or for whatever reason, as long as it pays our bills.

A lot of game ads are just about promoting the game in general - like currently we seems to be cycling stuff like Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Fable II, Valkyria Chronicles, World of Goo and more. You can't really underestimate how important extensive ad campaigns are - just look at how well it worked for Fallout 3.

Not to mention that they build up awareness in the customer, just like TV ads. I believe that's the primary goal, not having people click.

Down 22 hours for me. Stupid Host file. Anyway I thought Pope Viper forgot his user name and started replying to himself causing more posts than even a supercomputer could handle.
