Well I was just thinking about the enemies in Fallout 3. It seems that the only new enemies were the Mirelurks , Yao Gui's ( stupid name) and bloatflies. My question is this:

If you were to design new enemies what would they be?

I think their should be some kind of mutated spiders at least. More giant insects would fit well with the 50's sci fi style.

Another problem with the creatures is that there aren't any cats. In part 2 this was hypothesized that cats were eaten because they are easy prey, but this sounds like a sham to me. Surely all the cats in the world haven't been eaten.

Different skins for the mutants would be nice too. Same with the Feral Ghouls. Glowing Ones are stupid so I won't comment. Should have been a lot more Ghouls in the game to begin with other than the Feral kind.

Enclave were boring except for the Tesla armored ones. I thought that was a cool addition.

I just find it hard to believe that only humans and a assortment of mutants and ghouls survived the war. I mean, there are all kinds of animals that live underground that could have survived to begin with. Bats for example, mountain lions would be cool to see, even some grapoid like sandworms could be thrown in for good measure. I would like to see a area of the desert occupied by sandworms.

Snakes and other reptiles would be pretty cool to see in the game too. I remember in Deadlands there was a enemy called a Landshark. It was basically a shark that traveled under the sand. Just an example of the kinds of creativity that can be used.

I just hope with mods that lots of these creatures can be added ( or better ones). I know Oblivion has had so many more enemies added to the game.

You forgot the new robots: Mr Gutsy, Protectron, Sentry Bot and Eyebot

I wouldn't bother adding new enemies unless they really add something. Variety is only fun if its actual variety, all radroaches and bloatflies do is add more scenery to ignore.

One thing I'd add is a more interesting form of centaur. They're basically horrible mismashes of creatures according to their description, but in all fallouts every type looks the same. Mix it up, show it when one is part brahmin part dog part human and another is 3 humans stuck together.

I'd also do more with desert-specific rodents. Like gerbils. Gerbils are cut and all, but that's exactly why they would function so well as scary enemies. Put a mouth of mismatched fangs on it, ruffle and dirty up the fur and make it 3 foot tall and suddenly not so cute anymore.

A mutated cat would be pretty cool. It would be neat to see a saber-tooth tiger sort of mutation from a cat. Scary as hell, too, if it was fast and traveled in packs.

Your right about the robots. They were a little different. I would like to see an actual automaton type robot like off of Metropolis. That would fit the 50's style very well.

Mutant Spiders? YES! Imagine a old, ruined city. Now imagine that there are many big, mutant spiders there in the ruins. And they woven a lot of webs around, so it's quite common to see people being killed by being careless. And those spiders also are the natural enemies of radscorpions, who they gladly kill. These spiders would also make a stronger former of spider silk that can also be harvested to process and make impact-resistant (combat armor level) armor. The armors would be called SilkLeather Armors or Spider Armors. Those armors would be expensive and hard to find (but not as expensive and hard to find as Combat Armor) due to the dificulties of "harvesting" spider silk. Those armors would also only resist against things like blunt trauma, bullets and knifes. Lasers and fire would kill anyone with one of those armors very, very quickly.

Another good creatures would be Camel Spiders. Look at the Urban Legens wiki entry:

In the Middle East, it is widely rumored among American and coalition military forces stationed there that Solifugae will feed on living human flesh. The story goes that the creature will inject some anaesthetizing venom into the exposed skin of its sleeping victim, then feed voraciously, leaving the victim to awaken with a gaping wound. Solifugae, however, do not produce such an anaesthetic, and they do not attack prey larger than themselves unless threatened. Other stories include tales of them leaping into the air, disemboweling camels, screaming, and running alongside moving humvees;

Those fantastic things are urban legends... today. But in the radioactive, post-nuclear future of Fallout? Oh boy... Those urban legens about them would be true. ALL OF THEM. Imagine a spider-like monster smaller than a radscorpion. Looks harmless? NO. It will do everything said above. Including leaping into the air, killing camels, screaming AND even running helluva fast. They would be pretty much mid-end game monsters. Not as strong as deathclaws, but something that would make you run.

Pseudoscorpions would also be a possible creature. They would not be agressive to humans, though. They would prey upon ants and boatflies.

Mutant Cats? YES. I WANT. Mutant Ocelots, Saber-Tooths... heck, give me mutated, but domesticated cats as dangerous as a tiger for my nature-wise character to tame and unleash on Super Mutants.

Also, I would like to see Mutated Dogs. What about three-headed, mutated dogs named "Cerberi" by the ghouls? Does not need to breathe fire, though.

Mutant Scavengers are a must. Death comes from the skies, too. They would usually atack the dead, but also the living if they are really hungry. They would be big (deathclaw sized) and strong, although not too resistant. They would use the advantage of being able to fly A LOT.

Humanoid Mutants... What about a race of sewer-dweller mutants that is super-agile and can preview your movements though a light form of telepathy - IE they KNOW when you are drawing that gun to shoot them and they know where you are going to fire. They would make great enemies in FO3 due to VATS. They would be super-hard to hit due to their superhuman speed, but killing them would really feel like worth it.

Another race I thought of are giant-sized humanoids called Jigantos. They are two times the size of a Super Mutant and were created by radiation. They are not sterile and have normal human intelligence. They are stronger than Super Mutants (enough to carry cars with some effort) and tougher. However, their sight is poor and they usually rely on what they hear rather than see. There IS a mutant bloodline amongst them that is just the oposite. Those are the Eagle-Eyes, who are usually sent for the job of being sharp-shooters. The Jigantos value melee combat, however, they use guns commonly, specially the Eagle-Eyes, who are super-snipers.

Worms from Dune should be in wastelands...or at least Snakes...and spiders is really good idea...bats too...and rats...

Any way there are birds flaying over megaton but its wired no vegetation so what they eat? they are too small to eat molerats...

One would take up half the gaming space ;)

OK maybe smaller version...but it would be interesting encounter sure 90% of time player would end up dead but hey...

Also i like Spiders & Bats idea...could be scary...

Fish mobs maybe piranhas or octopous or krakens...its to easy to swim now...

Birds they should be eatable and sometimes atacke in packs...

Rats oh yes lots of rats...

And maybe Boars insted of Molerats they suck...

Did anyone ever find a squirrel? I found hundreds of these squirrel-on-a-stick thingies, but never an actual squirrel...

Maybe they were extinct shortly before you leave the vault? Or maybe they pilot Liberty Prime... mmmh

How the hell would squirrels even survive for 200 years in a post-nuclear wasteland, with no food to forage and murderous mutations shambling all over the place, one has to wonder..

Lizardmen are a bit too much like DandD, but might fit well.

I see nothing wrong with borrowing from Gamma World.
