Erratic Internet connection

Today I have witnessed crazy. My computer suddenly started behaving erratically with its Internet. I'm only able to access Google and Facebook reliably, with other websites consistently refusing to load most of the time, loading only during windows lasting a few minutes. It's driving me nuts, since I rely on my Internet for working.

Here's IPCONFIG:

I have also lost my router control panel password. Just to be on the safe side: resetting it to the factory settings doesn't actually wipe out my Internet connection? It's been a while since I've done a reset.

Is this a gateway we're talking about (a gateway is the modem and router being a single unit) or a router that is separate from the modem?

If it's a separate router, then doing a factory reset definitely shouldn't impact your internet connection. If you have any custom settings for your local network or firewall you will lose those, but you should know what those would be since you'd have done them in the first place.

If it's a gateway, then you should still be fine. Generally there aren't any settings in the gateway that you would lose with the factory reset which would affect the internet connection itself. However, I can't give you 100% certainty on that. Only way to be sure would be to ask your ISP (assuming your ISP provided the gateway).

I can't see anything wrong in your IPconfig, and nothing that you're describing gives me a good idea of what exactly the issue might be. Generally, if you can access some websites but not others, it's either that your connection isn't working at all and those website that appear to be working are simply cached, or the problem is something besides the internet connection itself. Trying a factory reboot of the router/gateway is a good first troubleshooting step.

DNS error.

reboot (powermcyclr) doesn't help?

how about that reset?

is it wireless?

im drunk

Wireless gateway. It's fine now.

Guess it was a connection hiccup. Kabel Deutschland is pretty reliable (100 Mbps connection), but sometimes it has THOSE DAYS.

ip config is rarely helpful in troubleshooting internet connections.

the only helpful information is, is the ip address correct, and does your default gateway match the ip address.

anything outside of that, it is not very helpful.

first thing to test is always ping the default gateway, and then ping your ISPs default gateway.
