But my fear is that you'll have to basically remake that map, right? Too much change for me this late in the process... Hmm.

Postpone the release date to make things better, i can wait and i'm sure the others can wait too. ;)
Yes, but I have to draw a line at some point....

Pixote, how do you go about moving the map? Or by move do you mean remake the first elevation but when you remake it you start at a different point? If moving it is easy, sure go right ahead. I just fear missing scripts or things breaking as a result...

I think there is a wrong random encounter.
The log says I encountered "Some angry bandits" but all there is is an empty camp.

EDIT: Just happened again. I'm saving on extra slots, so if you want to take a look just tell me and I'll upload them both.

Sidenote: when missing a shot, a dead merchant was said to get shot, even when the option for dead bodies absorbing damage is set to avoid it in all cases.

I believe all the "angry" encounters are Kaga. Odd that they're empty for you. Do post a save game.

I'm getting crashes due to a reference to unreadble memory after entering Vault City. I'll provide a savegame from Gecko.

EDIT: Changing the subject, according to some guides for vanilla Fallout 2, playing stupid character I shouldn't be able to get the Toxic Caves on the map (I assume I should be unable to get the quest of saving Smilie, but I'm not, and I've got a specific dialog for the quest for the stupid character) and I should be able to recruit Sulik, but I'm not. Is that normal?

These are the two encounters.
Both those save game indeed show an empty encounter. However, when I start walking on the world map I get another "angry bandit" encounter and it works just fine - Kaga and his cronies show up. I tried this several times and it always worked for me.

No crash for me and I tried several times and and at different times of day.

I don't recall, but the only guide you should use is Per's. Don't trust others. ;)

Mentioning Per's Guide, I've read there this paragraph:

If you plant more than one pair of dice on a casino dealer before talking to her, the dice will all disappear, and a dealer with no dice will tell you that her table has been closed down due to someone tampering with the dice. This is a remnant of an unimplemented feature where you could improve your chances by planting Loaded Dice (the dealers would originally have been equipped with normal ones).

Is this implemented in some way in the Restoration Pack? I'm just curious.

I'm not sure wether this is a bug or not but while the HighRes mod gives you the ability to see a lot more of the map walking is still quite tricky:

Whenever the distance you are trying to run with your character is a bit bigger than the actual screen there is this damned red X that pretends your char from moving. So I always have to go back with the mouse and click only on the first third of the whole range, then on the second and so on to get finally to the destination. That's annoying and needless.

Why's that? :o

Well, then I think it's either my setup or Windows 8. I'll try reinstalling tomorrow and tell you. Maybe it's the typical not read-only problem, do you mind telling me which folder are the ones I should make read only?

About the guide, that's the one I used. I checked a few others two, but that's the one I paid the most attention to.

Toxic Caves: You need Mentats to put it on on your world map, but you can rescue Smiley once you do and get the Gecko Skinning perk.
I didn't even had mentats that early in the game. The woman (I don't recall her name) just asked me to go find Smilie there.
NPC management could be difficult. You can get a few of them (Sulik, Vic, Goris, K-9, Dogmeat, and you can of course use Mentats to recruit others)
Sulik, aside of telling me I have stupid spirits the first time I talk to him, mostly ignores me.

That's because the pathfinding is supposed to depend on the character, I believe it's base on his perception. You can modify this through ddraw.ini, so you can walk as far as you want.

Instructions to Fix:
1)Start Fallout 2 with RP 2.2B
2)Press options before loading or starting new game
3)Press Screen Settings
4)Increase Path Finding Range
5)Profit

I saw an empty Mountain5 and a cavern (3 or 5) map. Only happened once each and I couldn't reproduce it. Tried Mountain5 tons of times. Was thinking it's a problem with Kaga's spawn point (either too far away so he removes himself, or that he tries to spawn in a mountain or something and can't get placed), so i tried to mess with worldmap.txt a bit. Annoyingly you can only set spawn distance or hex number for items. Critter distance seems to solely be determined by player perception.
I did see something odd though. I kept spawning at the same spot (same map) all the time. In maps.txt there were 5 random_start_points for that map, but none of those where ever used. Am I missing something or is it broken?

Oh, and what does "AMBUSH Player" actually do? I tried without it and it made no difference. Maybe it's as simple as it's the default mode and is not really needed.

Also on Kaga. His friends choose spawn location based on the dude and not Kaga. This often leads to Kaga being 12 hexes on one side of you and his goons on your other side. looks a bit odd.
Also plus... While Kagas dialog window is up his friends repeatedly turbo float in the back ground, a bit annoying. Probably only noticeable with higher than default resolution.

Not for me either. I swear I saw something like this before, but my searches turned up empty. Anyway, missing 00000548.pro (Old Joey) in \DATA\Proto\Critters folder would produce that kind of crash. Could you check that you have that file Oppen?

DING DING DING, we have a winner. It's missing.
After reinstalling (who knows what else might be missing?), should I set it to read only? Any other folder that I should set to read only?

Only the stuff in the proto directory needs to be set to read only. But I'm confused, how did you go about installing the RP? If you used the installer, why didn't it set them for you? And if it didn't, why haven't others on Win 8 reported this?

Don't worry, I messed it. Or at least, I think so. I suspected the Kaga problems were due to not read only files, then I set TOO MANY files to read only and lost access to saved games, then I set everything to read write. Anyway, just in case I'll check it's set in read only after reinstalling, I just didn't know the installer was supposed to do that.

After reinstalling, I can confirm that the performance problem I had with the default config is gone. I'm not sure what caused it, something running in the background probably. The default resolution is still 1024x768.

Ah, thank you! That's exactely the solution for my problem! :)

(Maximum range should be the default setting. Don't know why anybody would like to limit his walking range.)

I had a program crash:

As I was fighting at the slaves camp (don't know if this has any significance) the program crashed with this error:

"Application Error: C:\Fallout 2\fallout2.exe

The instruction at 0045360a referenced memory at feedfad2
The memory could not be read from

Click on OK to terminate the application"

Does anybody know what that means?

Potential impact on performance, possibly: path-finding can chew through a lot of CPU, depending on implementation, I think.

But maybe changing the resolution should also change the path-finding distance to a suitable setting, if this is possible. Still leaving the option for the user to customize it if so desired.

If this isn't reproducible, then it's a random engine issue.
