Fallout 3 at LGC: GameSpy

GameSpy went to Leipzig to answer that question: Will Bethesda's post-nuclear adventure do the Fallout series justice?
There's far more to do in Fallout 3 than just shooting people to itsy-bitsy pieces. If you're playing a character with plenty of speech skill, you can sway the natives with the power of conversation, plying them for free stuff, favors, and access to stuff that you'd otherwise only achieve through combat or thievery. Then there are the hacking and lock-picking games that will get you into places where you weren't meant to be. The lock-picking mini-game is a test of finesse, as you work a screwdriver and bobby pin simultaneously in order to turn locks, hoping to apply the right amount of pressure before your pin snaps. The hacking mini-game is a word puzzle, where through the process of elimination and lucky guesswork you arrive at the necessary password to break into the system.

Fallout 3 is a very different game from its predecessors on a surface level, but the feeling we get while playing it, even in this unfinished state, tells us that it's also very much the same. Bethesda clearly has a solid understanding of the appeal behind the franchise, and has taken great steps towards recreating and even improving upon the most important aspects of the classic PC role-playing games. Even the most die-hard Fallout fan couldn't ask for anything more.
Spiffy Captures the intangibles of the Fallout franchise without sacrificing graphics or playability.
Iffy We're hoping for a strong main storyline to accompany the free-roaming exploration aspects.

I get the feeling people are going to be yelling "BULLSHIT!" soon.

Anyway, it was an alright preview. Could of given some info, though

Wait, what? I thought, the game is finished? Did they present an unfinished build on the GC?

I suspect they used the same build as they did at E3, which was probably already a month old at E3.

They need to present a polished build, not simply "the most recent build", because the most recent can contain nasty bugs QA might have missed, which would make for some embarrassing preview experiences.

Technically a game isn't finished until it goes gold (meaning a finished master) and goes to the manufacturers for disc printing. That usually happens about a month before the release date (October 28 - 31, 2008). So I would say that the game won't be finished until September 30. Of course even then it could be unfinished and buggy and poorly implemented like some of Oblivion was.

Right now even with them saying that the game is finished, this is mostly PR speak. Even with them using the Oblivion engine, there is almost no chance that the game will ship 100% bug free (especially for the variety of configurations that exist for the PC). Technically anything that has it's features locked in placed and has passed the gauntlet of testing for major bugs, should be referred to as beta software before the shipping version is finalized.

Ok, I'll say it...bullshit.

They (and by they I mean not just Bethesda, but nearly every source covering them) are trying very, very hard to convince me about what I do and don't want.

I mean, I was fairly sure I wanted turn based combat, but everyone has been telling me that I don't (and that it's old fashioned and makes a game unsaleable to boot), so what the hell do I know...

You want first person shooter, Fromage ... you want slow motion head explosions ... you want lightning fast zombies ... you want cannibal orcs ... you want Oblivion with guns, Fromage.

You forget GameSpy said like right after Bethesda bought the rights to Fallout they'd rate it 10/10 just to piss NMA off...

Wow, are you serial?? That's just wrong :?

or they just find making fun of video game players who take themselves and their games way too serious as a fun past time

I am excited about the game though, even though I have been playing FO 1 and 2 since they came out, I am excited about it, so that naturally puts me on the unobjective side of likeing most of what I read about it :)

There are different flavors of fun and arcadish "shoot em up" kind of fun, is not the only type of fun you can have in games.

??? I never said that, I was merely laughing at the remarks about gamespy saying they would make a 10/10 to tick off NMA.

I don't typically shootem games......
Except metal gear but that is a whole nother story.

By doing this they alienate the fans, which by definition take this seriously, and you should not tell other people what they should or not care about.
Some people like soccer so much here in Brazil that they kill for that, those kind of fanatics are a good target for your comment.

We just care for our form of entertainment, and don't want to praise mediocracy, it's better to be critic about some things then to suckup to a company that have made "mistakes" in the past.

GamersGlobal said that it was a different build than they had played before which I thought was the E3 build.

Agreed. It'd be nice if they allowed previewers to try anything (including the main quest) as well instead of putting tons of stuff off limits.
