Eschewing the prescribed gameplay path of visiting Megaton (that admittedly is not actually prescribed except for the winding path leading from the Vault door to the city)...

Did I misunderstand this, or is there really a trail of some sort leading straight from the vault to Megaton? I hope not, 'cause that would be really silly :?

There's a path leading to Springvale (I think that's the name) some destroyed suburb. The path there leads to Megaton. Vault 101 isn't exactly a big secret as everyone in town knows about you.

And yes, majority of the game is BEHIND the vault in the complete opposite direction that every gameplay video takes you.

Sounds exciting. Guess Bethesda listened to the common 'combat was boring in Fallout 1/2' from players of the old game. I hope the game isn't too combat heavy, though.
Bullshit. Fighting rats wasn't the most exciting thing, sure, but I loved fighting in FO1/2 myself. Kindly avoid making sweeping generalizations such the one you just made. What you really meant is that you found the combat boring, and that you've seen some other people say the same thing. However, I disagree, and am a player of the "old" Fallout games, thus disproving your generalization.

The combat was usually only tedious if you were fighting 30+ enemies (make sure you set your alarm clock for when it gets to your turn..) or if you decide to go on one caravan run after another. Decent pay but you REALLY did not want to do that unless you just needed to get to the town they were going to and the pay and exp for the fights are just a little reward while you get there.
Turning the combat speed up helps quite a lot in both situations.

I loved fighting too but I refused to wear Power Armor because it ruined the game's balance. When I discovered Enclave Power Armor in Fo2 it drove me crazy.

I thought it was fine for the Military Base but that's really about it. Fallout 2 handled it much worse than the original game but it certainly had issues in both.

Did you fight in the base? You're a braver man I am. I tried to pick a fight and those turrets raped me at level 15.

EDIT: On the topic of PAX, someone out there has the game. During the show they passed out cards based on the SPECIAL system. If you got the luck card, they gave you the special edition version and let you play it in this tricked out trailer in the middle of the exhibition hall. I heard everyone cheering for the winner but I was in BioWare's Dragon Age booth and didn't seem him/her.

sad and probably true.

hopefully he spoils everything on gamefaqs.

EDIT: On the subject of PAX, I played Fable 2 as well which is probably the ugliest next-gen game I've seen. 2004 vanilla Fable looks better.

Was it still an enjoyable game?

i LOVED combat in fallout 1..
even at early levels..

of course you can't expect to hit enemies in the eyes witha pistol from 60 foot away when you have 30% skill.. but that's obvious..

nonethenless even at the beginning it was fun for me to decide: ummm shall i trya called shot to the body (wich gives more chances than a normal shot) or i'll just use a 5ap shot so i can run backwards for 1 more tile or save AP to increase my AC?

only thing i didn't like about the combat was the fact that eye-shot were a no brainer when you were a bit skilled with a weapon..

while shooting a limb wasn't a great tactic (because when you were at low levels it was difficult for you to actually broke a leg with a few shots.. making the enemy eventually reach you nonthenless.. while when you were at uber level there was no point in trying to amper the movement of the enemy when you just coult kill them with a head-eye shot)..

Anyway funniest thing in fallout combat was sulik with a super sledge hammer! just loved to see enemies traslate on the floor like 20 tiles lol!

if you used that against raiders of course.. but against enclave troops it just give you a CHANCE to not be melted...

what i didn't like about the enclave power armor was the looks of it.. the REAL power armor was a lot more 50 looking :) (yet the worst was the TACTICS power armor.. looked like something out of power rangers!)

Yet my favourite stays the combat armor! i just loved that helmet (reminded me a bit of robocop dunno why!) and that green color!
