Fallout 3 Compendium - Release 12 - Beta v0.6.0.2

Since this mod is un-officially dead, can anyone recommend some good fallout 3 mods that makes the game more like fallout 1/2? The mods that get pumped out for F3 all lack the F1/F2 features, while I appreciate realism that some mods aim for (such as forcing players to eat, sleep, the scarcity of items/weapons in the FOOK mod), others concentrate on adding a too many weapons, items or irrelevant features that have no place in the fallout universe.

Any suggestions? I would LOVE to see the old damage system back in (damage threshold and all), a better crippling system with a doctor skill..etc.

That medicine skill overhaul is an interesting idea!

However, I have found exactly zero mods which actually succeed in emulating the first two games. I consider the problem to be twofold:

1) The core of Fallout and Fallout 2's gameplay was choice and consequence, mostly played out in complex dialogue trees and branching quest design. These features are totally absent from Fallout 3. Quest modding has only just begun, and there aren't any finished products to speak of. Time will tell if anyone succeeds on this modding front. Search the Bethesda Fallout 3 modding boards for topics by username: Castle. He has a WIP that could turn out to be interesting.

2) The core of Fallout and Fallout 2's combat system was pretty strict tabletop emulation. Moving to first-person 3d realtime combat all but kills any possibility of implementing a combat system that at all resembles dice-rolls. Mass Effect did it much better than Fallout 3, but even Mass Effect is nothing like tabletop rpg combat.

There was a guy who actually succeeded (mostly) in making Fallout 3's combat turn-based. And, sadly, it turned out to be totally unfulfilling. Turn-based combat in first-person 3d is pretty clunky and agonizingly slow and you have no tactical view of the situation, etc. And, the multi-storied indoor spaces, varied terrain-height outdoors, and corridor-constrained maps make anything like the isometric view of the first two games impossible.

So, I settle for an install of FOIP, with FOOK, XFO, MMM, and WMK, plus a perk mod. At least now the game is challenging. Still stupid, but challenging.
