To be fair, I'd be surprised if a sizable chunk of adult Americans knew the difference, it's not like America makes any effort to learn about, let alone understand, foreign cultures. Chinese, Japanese, Korean is all Asian to them.

Indeed and it's quite nice. The Japanese just need to decide to eliminate the use of kanji so as to simplify their language for themselves and outsiders. That said, I don't see it happening any time in the near future.Cimmerian Nights said:Yeah but you don't need to learn phonics or spelling in Japanese.
