Fallout 3 GotY: AP #1, GameSpy PC #1

Fallout 3 is the #1 PC game and PC RPG on GameSpy.
When it was announced that Bethesda Softworks would be developing Fallout 3, longtime fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise let out a groan that could seemingly be heard across the Internet. Questions abounded: Would the game be isometric? Could players beat Fallout 3 solely through the use of dialogue? Would it just be Oblivion with guns? Fallout forums were full of doom and gloom posts that suggested Bethesda would invariably ruin the franchise. Thankfully, that couldn't have been further from the truth, as Fallout 3 ended up not only being the best game of the year, but one of the finest titles of this generation.

Fallout 3 is a hybrid of sorts, combining RPG elements with first-person shooting action. Although there are moments when you'll feel like playing the game as a standard FPS, you'll inevitably end up switching to the enjoyably simple V.A.T.S. system during some combat sequences, often with bloody results. While there's an entertaining story in place (as well as plenty of memorable side-quests), Fallout 3's most impressive feature is its environments, which somehow manage to make a desolate nuclear wasteland look oddly beautiful. There are some who aren't happy with Bethesda's vision of what a Fallout game should be, but even the most vocal complaints are being drowned out by the sound of applause from the rest of the gaming community.
It also comes in first in this AP list.

Funny, I can only name a handful of posters here who have played the first 2 and had minimal positive things to say regarding 3. I highly suspect that a quarter of the people now currently playing 3 have even attempted to play the first two games. One situations at work for instance. One co-worker wants to play 3. So I suggested he play the first two games before wasting his money on the third, he ask when the first games where made. To his response to my answer, he replied, "Nah, games back then were crap, besides they're not even in 3D." He's a younger kid around 19...Kinda makes me sad : (

It's impossible to get a reasonable measurement of "Fallout fans". To pretend NMA represents all of Fallout fandom by default is unfair. To pretend there is a mythical "silent minority" who all disagree with us is also stupid.

It's a discussion best left alone. But sadly these game sites love to declare their one-sided view to be absolute.

It is true that we're being drowned out by the hype. But that was predictable, just as it is predictable that when the hype dies down these same blokes who are praising it as an amazing game now will begin to tone down their assessment.

We're being drowned out by the applause? I guess that means we're wrong on the substance :/

Seriously, when these sites can't make an argument they ALWAYS appeal to the crowd, which is a fallacy you should learn in Logic and Reasoning 101.

We should send them some great moments in history where people were drowned out by applause... it's not pretty.

Ouch, seriously? That saddens me, mostly because I'm a year younger than him. Hell, I know a guy who's seventeen and he's in to "old crappy games with no 3D". 3D isn't even all it's cracked up to be. What killed the Sonic franchise? Well other than bad writing and plot and dumb teamwork themes and a "Jesus this cast is too big" cast and did I mention bad writing and plot was the change to 3D.

Funny you should bring up the Sonic games.

This week's Zero Punctuation was about Sonic Unleashed, and it sounded very disappointing.

I used to be a major fan of the Sonic games with Sonic 3 & Knuckles being one of the best platformers ever.
It even had something of a storyline during the game itself.

As an old-school Segaist and Sonic fan, I say with some shame that Sonic games haven't been any good for years. Either the franchise needs a new reinvention or the concept needs to be dumped.

Every 3d Sonic has been an abortion to play... except maybe the Dreamcast one... that one was tolerable.

From everything I've read, the regular, 2d running parts of this new Sonic are excellent, the were-hog bits are brutal, and the hub worlds are just tedious.

That new Bioware Sonic game looks neat though...

Yeah, I just saw that. Pretty entertaining. I honestly didn't understand everyone getting so hyped for that game. I mean seriously, a were-hog? Just please stop Sega.

Comrade!!!!

* sigh * Yeah, as I wrote earlier, I haven't really enjoyed the Sonic games after Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I have played the Adventure games, the Shadow game, and some of the GBA and DS games but somehow the franchise has lost its charm.

Not trying to hijack the topic but part of the problem lies that the original Sonic Team has long left.
Also explains why the Phantasy Star games have gone downhill (basically the same setup of planets, characters and threats, just different setting)

The GBA and DS games are handled by a different developer, I wonder what their obsession with bottomless pits is.

I think Sonic is as much a victim of misinterpretation as Fallout.

People seem to recall Sonic as this "hold Right on the d-pad to win" game, when it in fact rewarded exploration a whole lot more through lives and, more importantly, the bonus level/chaos emeralds system. Sure, you could play it on speed alone - it is a pretty big element in the game, after all - but it wasn't the only thing to it. Nowadays, I get the feeling devs try too hard to get the running around right and ignore the other aspects, just like Fallout was turned into this tongue-in-cheek slapstick-fest in later games.
