Spike TV's Video Game Awards has awarded its Game of the Year to Grand Theft Auto IV, over Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, LittleBigPlanet and MGS 4. Fallout 3 ran away with RPG of the Year, winning out over The World Ends with You, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning and Fable II. Fallout 3 was also nominated Best Graphics (lost to MGS 4), Best Original Score (lost to - again - MGS 4) and Best Xbox 360 Game (lost to Gears of War 2).

Also, World of Goo won independent game of the year. Squeee!

Telegraph put up its top 50 via MCV (thanks RPGWatch). Fable II grabs top honours, Fallout 3 follows at #2.

Game|Life has put together a top list, in which Fallout 3 makes #4 multiplatform.
4. Fallout 3 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC)

Though it may never live up to the ruby-tinted expectations of longtime Fallout fans, Fallout 3 successfully balanced the immense, open-world scope of Oblivion with the series' trademark bleak dystopian future. More importantly, it offered more content than any one gamer could ever experience and an enjoyable route through the story for players of all kinds. -- Earnest Cavalli

RPG of the year? ...

Considering the competition, would be like wining the paralympics as athlete without handcap. Or even without any other athletes at all to begin with ...

With enough Hype and marketing GTA IV or Far Cry 2 could have easily won the "RPG of the year" award.

I assume they never even played The Witcher - the only game this year who deserves being called an RPG. Either way, no surprises there. It's a shallow award show, anyway - all the obvious and uninteresting choices.

I have to SERIOUSLY disagree with the choice for GOTY. Granted, GTA IV had some amazing production values, but it just was not that FUN to play. Rockstar should definitely consider returning to the previously wacky nature of the series, which was incredibly fun.

Nonsense. Not many people have ever played GTA with the intent to complete the game, and not many accomplish the goal. Completing the story is fun, but that's not where you'll find your fun. People claim the GTAIV is not "wacky" or "fun". I'm not sure if there was a GTA I would categorize as "wacky", but I find it hard to believe that people can't have fun with GTA. It has a gritty story. Who gives a shit? The game isn't gritty, when it comes down to it I can still run around with an RPG and rocket jumping, stealing more expensive cars than I will ever touch, and murder people at random. All while drunk. IRL. People see Niko and it's story and quickly jump on the bitter bandwagon.

GTA IV was the most overhyped piece of shit ever. Hands down. Even more than FO3. Having your cousin call every 3 seconds, yelling about "American titties" made the game nigh unplayable, and the story was just bleh, IMO. And the main character looked like shit. Why the hell would I want to go bowling, or watch a comedy show in a game, when I can go do that in real life. I don't want my games to be life simulators... I live in "real life" and it's boring most of the time. Don't simulate it please.

As for FO3, I'm glad it got beat for "Best graphics" MGS 4's graphics blew me away, and it deserved the honour, easily.

As for GoTY, I'm still giving it to LBP. I've gotten more enjoyment out of that game this year than any other.

I have yet to play GTA IV, but one thing I'll remark: I didn't buy the hype back then, I'm not buying the backlash of the hype now. It sounds like an average GTA, which makes it a great game (yes, average GTA = great game). Unless it is significantly worse than any previous GTA iteration - including the head-scratching stupid design decisions in GTA:SA - I can't imagine it being inferior to Fallout 3.

GTA:SA is still my favourite GTA ever. I had never finished a GTA before San Andreas, and GTA IV didn't buck that trend. I got maybe 3 or 4 hours into GTA IV, and sold it on Ebay.

San Andreas, IMO, is the best GTA, period. I liked being able to change the way I look, etc.

Hopefully, with GTA V, they'll return to the roots of the series. I've heard that Saints Row 2 is a much superior sandbox game to GTA IV, so maybe I'll give that a spin.

GTA: SA is easily the most bone-headed, ill-thought-out GTA of the series. I'd say 2 is best, followed by a tie between GTA and GTA:VC.

I'll take your disapproval of GTA IV as a recommendation.

I had forgot about VC, although I didn't finish it, it was a very good game. Got stuck on the "remote control helicopter mission" though, which sucked.

Remote control helicopter? That one is a breeze. Later on you get a remote control plane mission. With VC's shitty controls, that mission is officially the worst mission in the history of video gaming.

The one I mean was the one where you had to place TNT into a building using a remote control aircraft of some kind (it's been a few years). The guy who gave the mission had a cowboy hat, I think.

Anyways, VC's controls didn't lend itself well to that type of thing, and I got annoyed and stopped playing it after that.

Other than that, I really liked VC... had a lot of style.
