Fallout 3 hands-on at E3 is press only

You probably should have taken my advise to take a minute and calm down, BB, but as you wish.

No, BN, dity pool and rotten were in my words, and not directly attributed to anyone elses argument.

"I don't see where you've proven there's dirty pool here. "

...

You are claiming that the above line is not attributing the argument/burden of proof on someone else? You claim we needed to prove that "there's dirty pool here". Why? Nobody claimed there's dirty pool here, except you.

Hence, strawman.

Bodybag said:
Usisng your logic, I should be screaming "strawman" because no one is arguing the inverse of this ridiculous shit. Hell, can you EVEN inverse that tangled mess? Like you said, I have comprehension problems.

Actually, I was arguing in the structure of a rhetoric sentence. I was saying "I think Bethesda picked E3 for this hands-on realising full-well it's press only". It was a statement poured into a rhetoric sentence.

You, on the other hand:

I merely stated that I didn't think "how Bethesda" was really being honest, not when you consider in this instance they're not doing anything outside of the norm in respect to their peers.

So how does the statement "How Bethesda" preclude that this is the norm? Where did I say their actions were outside the norm? I didn't, I said they were the norm for them, not that they were not the norm for anyone else. This is something you assumed, but nobody said.

Bodybag said:
I stand by that assessment. How long until you blame me for making this tit-for-tat?

Considering you were the one going into this thread to protest to the line "how Bethesda", I don't think there's any real question of blame here.

Bodybag said:
Will it at least be after you post a "props to" or "kudos to" or perhaps even a "thanks" next to the helpful chap's name who's responisble for this bit of info trickling out?

No.

I assumed nothing, and you're arguing agasint the wrong point. What I'm saying is because it's not outside the norm for everyone else means its dishonest to suggest that this is somehow an action unique to one company of many participating in the same practice. You do this when you say "how Bethesda" and you leave it at that as your two word summation of a news post. I hope you understand that, at least.

Did you know black people download MP3s illegally? Isn't that just like a black person?

In the interests of full disclosure and for proper identification of irony I am a black person.

Again, try to calm down. I don't even know what you're saying here.

Or perhaps I don't do that at all, but you just assumed the worst of my intended meaning?

It is just like Bethesda to do a press-only hands-on demo. Many companies do this, but not all, and it's just like Bethesda to do so. That's all it says. Your intent to see ill will doesn't change that.

You know, the "calm down" internet zinger has some negatively-skewed diminishing returns when used more than once. And when you factor in that I wasn't really feeling anger when I imagined shitting in that dude's hat, it's a blank score you're starting with.

I notice that not many Fallout 3 news blurbs go without some sort of pinpoint, between the lines, CSI: Miami level deconstruction looking for the bad news. Hey, that's what a fan site is for, right?

**This is just my personal opinion here, but I think it shows maybe a little lack of respect for and /or faith in your readership when you post news articles in that manner. No, you're not stiffling debate, but it seems to me that you are contriving it, at least some of the time. Let the readers dig out those angles for a change - your debates may even end up being more engaging.**

Are you going to tell me you intended "how Besthesda" as anything but a negative connotation? Don't mealy-mouth it, BN. Yes or no? And I have no intent to see ill will; however, now that you mention it you seem to exhibit a frequent willingness to display it in the guise of news posts.

Does that mean you're now a millionaire?

I was awaiting the drawing, look how close!

I wouldn've sprung for a suite, too. No cabana party for BN :(

You have some odd tendency to believe the worst in people. I'm not zinging you, I'm advising you, because you sound upset.

Yes they do. In fact, prior to this wave of previews, which we heavily editorialized, there was almost no editorializing in newsposts at all, except by Per. That's our standard policy, which we kind of broke with for this wave, for our owns reasons.

Well, don't think we very much think about how we bring people the news.

I'm not telling people what to think, or even talk about. You'll notice people in the discussion thread rarely even pick up on the newspost notes, and often bring in their own points.

We actually normally don't do this because we have a wide readerbase that's not equally represented in our forums. This isn't the Codex, in other words, and there's no reason for us to editorialize, since our function is simply to bring people news and let them deal with it.

We dispensed with it for this wave, which was our choice, but we'll probably return to our normal newsposting later. Though Per will always put in snide zingers, it's his thing.

Bodybag said:

I intended "how Bethesda" as biting my thumb at Bagge (granted, a newspost is not the best place to do that), to indicate I was right in expecting this is exactly what Bethesda would do.

Funny. I have thousands on thousands of newsposts here. Of those, I'd be surprised if you could find two dozen that explicitly contain my personal opinion.

It still amuses me how we almost always avoid editorializing, but whenever we editorialize someone jumps in to say "you always editorialize, stop it!"

No editorializing. No editorializing. No editorializing. No editorializing. That's just some random clicks from our news archives. Other than Per, none of us regularly editorialize. It's so odd how...certain people don't recognize that.

Yeah sometimes I get carried away and forget not everyone is as bad as game designers or game journalists

Good you cleared that up, because I only recently joined this community. My only prior contact with you was on the [place that can be named, but old discussion from there is frowned upon] but IIRC the circumstances weren't much different. So my bad if that's not SOP, but it's basically all I've seen. Plus, you know, there's a bit of a reputation around here.

..wouldn't it be sweet if we could all conveniently and completely forget about how that "reputation" was exaggerated greatly by Bethesda and that the gaming media sites they fed it to perpetuated it across the internet by ridiculously parroting every stupid baseless claim that Bethesda has made about their spinoff of Fallout and the "fans" reaction to it?

yeah we hated FOBOS, but it was complete shit and it pretty much killed any chance of a Fallout 3 that we wanted. That's where NMA's reputation for not being run of the mill fanboys who would buy any crap with fallout written on it came from, and it had fuckall to do with Bethesda.

The majority of the new generation of "rabid fan" reputation is all smoke and mirrors that Beth's PR dept used to sidestep any public admission that they have an obligation to the Fallout franchise's fanbase for buying the games, loving them, and perpetuating them and the idea that the Fallout IP is a property that could yield profits.

Our reputation predates Bethesda, and it's baseless speculation to think they feed it. They might, they might not, they certainly don't do so publicly, so who knows? I don't think it really concerns them that actively, but the media are always ready to serve.

But that said...

It is partially earned, partially not. We're more reasonable than most take us for, but we're also exactly as unyielding as most think we are. And that bugs the hell out of some people.

Please show me where I stated that non-journalists would be able to play the game before release, BN. My premise was always that it would be playable on E3, which is a press-only event. I argued for the fact that it might be on the E3 show floor, not placed on the streets outside the venue or anything.

As far as I know, "playable at E3" usually means playable on the floor - aka not for invitees only, behind closed doors. If that is the case, we will at least see some off-screen videos.

Then, when I said "E3 is an invite-only event"

I know E3 went through some changes last year, but I'm sure there's still a show floor. A place where all the attendants check out the booths of the various game developers/publishers attending and get to try out their games.

Note E3 is invite-only, but not press only. I know you like the mix words, but Gstaff is making it pretty clear that they "set up appointments" with the "press that are attending".

You've been pushing the view that this'll be on the floor and anyone can walk up and play it, or video it. You should really consider admitting that's not realistic.
