I have here the intro to Fallout 3 - The words that Ron Perlman says. I haven't seen it posted anywhere else, but this is taken from Atomic Magazine in Australia (I'll try and post up the scans later on).

War. War never changes. Since the damn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything, from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage.

In the year 2077, after millennia of armed conflict, the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation. But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of human history. For man had succeeded in destroying the world - but war, war never changes.

In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the holocaust by taking refuge in enormous underground shelters, known as vaults. But when they emerged, they had only the hell of the wasted to greet them - all except those in Vault 101. For on the fateful day, when fire rained from the sky, the giant steel door of Vault 101 slid closed... and never reopened. It was here you were born. It is here you will die because, in Vault 101, no one ever enters and no one ever leaves

The article is actually quite interesting/good, though having a few flaws. Soon as I find a scanner, I'll put em up.

I still don't get why an entire society would live under the notion that they're never, ever getting out.
Even Vault 13 was under the illusion that someday they'd go out when it was safe.

Well, I don't know...They were all rather frightened of the prospect, though perhaps they figured it would be safe to leave eventually? I mean, did they say they were going to? (Not being confrontational, i just don't remember any dialogue like that...)

There's a faction that wants to leave early in the game. They've all heard stories of how dangerous it is out there but have their doubts. In the end, they *can* leave (possibly the Overseer feels it's best to cut his losses than have them stay and make more trouble).
There's no mantra of "You're born in the Vault, you die in the Vault", more like "Stay in the Vault! Evil things are waiting outside to eat you!"

We got diverse Vaults in F2. So maybe 101 was one wich had a non-functional Geiger Counter, that allways showed high-radiation outside... so it would be a 'You're born in the vault yo die in the vault' mentality (i mean after 200 years....).
But i personally think such a thing dosen't sound very 'cool' ;)

well, V101 could easily be an experiment to see how long a vault could last if you imprint them with the idea that they cant leave.

Wouldn't there also be a lot more radiation in DC than in California? It is the Capital.

Not easy to tell...
Just keep in mind, that 2077 is a bit away from 1996, and therefore they could also have thought of a goverment to California, or some very important military/whatever-targets for the nuclear weapons...
But at the moment (2007) i think the 'average' radiation there might be 'a bit' higher ;)
But i've no idea how important radiated rainfall and so on, is...

-edit-
Erm yes, i meant more or less the Vault-Experiment ;)

Hmm...
From what I remember, part of California that included the West Tek facility got saturated with bombs.

Yeah, thasstrue.

But I think that DC would be a more prime target, since it houses the majority of US government...

Americans don't really have a history of moving their capital arround like the Germans or Russians do ;)

I know... So there was nothing about another North & South was there? ;)
I'm just saying, that it isn't as easy as to say "the goverment was there" Norad would be also a main target... as a lot of other strategic points... so maybe the goverment isn't the biggest factor ;)

But the government would be, logically, the first hit. It'd take some time scrambling before we could really respond, I think. So...DC would be a cesspool of rads.

I think that intro text is actually quite good. Looking forward to hearing it in action.

It's funny though, these things can bring worries of all kinds... Will there be that lovely ambient soundtrack underneath Rons voice that gave such a depressing feel to it? Or will there be a... orchestra there?

EDIT: Actually,

In the year 2077, after millennia of armed conflict, the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation. But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of human history. For man had succeeded in destroying the world - but war, war never changes.

This bit reads a bit awkwardly I think. Perhaps it's because the word "world" is mentioned in 3 out of 4 sentences that run after each other. It's also kinda strange if you compare it to Fallout 2 where you Perlman states "The end of the world occured pretty much as we had predicted". And here we get "But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world".

Am I nitpicking? I can't tell anymore... :P
