Fallout 3 is actually decent

First time out of the vault
I really hate to admit it, considering i hate Bethesda for butchering Elder Scrolls and Star Trek but Fallout 3 is surprisingly amusing. The whole Character creation childhood thing in the vault is actually fun. When you get out of the vault though, the look of the world does look like a Wasteland. But so far the vault is my favorite part, though I've not made it far.

The only problem i have so far is the 3rd person camera sucks, for some reason they shove your character to the side instead of centering the camera on your back. Also heads and limbs get blown off WAY too easily. I have no idea why my little 9mm peashooter gives bloody mess results. 9mm shouldn't be able to make heads explode.

The only part though that really disappointes me is the sexual understone present in fallout games. They have 1 prostitute and she doesnt really seem like one. It fails to capture the seedy side of the Wasteland, which i find odd considering they have alot of F words in the game and it gets really gory but sex is bad? Thats pretty lame on bethesda's part.

The combat part is rather easy, I know the old school people would hate it because VATS is like the I win button. I've played every fallout and own the originals but i dont care about difficulty. Though even i was surprised how godlike you are at level 1. It seems that was the intention though, i looked alittle at the making of DVD and bethesda people said how its a single player game and your character is ment to be the most powerful person out in the wasteland.

So in closing, It is actually fun and it comes close to feeling totally like fallout but it falls short. Its sort of like Star Trek Enterpise, it has the name and theme and the like but it makes up its own cannon and generally tries to appeal more to mainstream then the actual fans. And like with that show, if they didnt call it Fallout it'd probaly be a true Game of the Year contender in my opinion, it unfortunatlly really is enjoyable but once you have the fallout on it, and the intention of making it like that, it falls short.

I'm going to have to disagree on the "it feels like Fallout." It doesn't. At all.

It feels like an Elder Scrolls game.

However, I like Morrowind, and tolerated Oblivion.

It comes close to feeling like true fallout. Though even BOS on PS2 and Xbox felt more Fallout then this.

Doesnt make it a bad game though, its unfortunatly fun. I feel its money well spent. Only they should have said its based on fallout then call it Fallout 3.

I would argue that VATS is definitely not an I-win button, I've been playing since noon and have probably done as much as the previewers did so far. VATS will not guarantee you will win a fight with an enemy, especially fire ants. There's a mission that involves them and you constantly have to retreat as they can hit you from a long range with their fire, from a distance you have less chance of hitting them and they take quite a bit to take down(2 grenades didn't kill one completely), not to mention you can't last too long in their powerful flame. And with food/health so weak in healing power you end up using most all of it in an intense battle like that. But I kind of like it, it makes me have to constantly scavenge to stay alive.

You're right, it doesn't feel like Fallout 1 and 2. It feels like...ohmigosh...Fallout THREE!

There's a reason Zelda, Mario, Metroid, GTA, and other famous IPs made the move to 3D. If done right, it can retain the feel of the original games while adding tons of new experiences.

Hello you lollipop-headed speedfreaks, you.

The NPC's are all generic personalities and quests are "jobs" instead of conflicts (most of the time.) Those are the two biggest changes in the "feel" of Bethesda's Fallout from the original two, and they are hugely detrimental to my enjoyment of this new title. I'd say that they also contribute significantly to this game not "feeling" much like the first two beyond half-hearted aesthetic imitation.

take it easy you old jewish fishermen you :puke:

FO3 has 2 different types of quests. Fetch quests and real quests. it's a big game. Try playing a little more before judging.

I was doing the same until I realized that if you carefully aim at their heads they are really easy, even with very little gun skill

I suppose it makes sense, they shuffle straight at you and are dumb as a box of hammers

Yeah, it doesn't really feel like a Fallout game, and there are a number of criticisms one could weigh against it, but I'm still enjoying the experience. A good, flawed RPG from Bethesda that's a whole lot more interesting than Oblivion.

Then you played some game I haven't played. Besides the names and stuff, I don't see any Fallout in there.

I was talking with two guys that were playing Fallout3 (they aren't probably die hard Fallout fans as many of us here), and they were saying exactly opossite:
- feels like elder scrolls
- they are missing 2D gameplay

The move to 3D isn't the sole, nor biggest reason, why so many are not happy about the changes; let alone calling it F3.

Kind of agree with you. Picked it up today on release since there wasn't much else coming out I was interested in, and I've been having a damn good time with it. It loses a lot of Fallout feel, but... Damned if it doesn't feel like a fun post-apocalyptic RPG anyway. Most of the Fallout references have been pretty clunky (Ex-Navarro soldier turned family man eaten by ants. Why? WHO KNOWS), and Three Dog irritates the ever loving piss out of me, but it seems like a much better game than Oblivion thus far.

Though I'm writing this with maybe 3 hours put into the game, and still lots of "New game shine" in my eyes.

I like Three Dog and the radio. It doesn't feels like 50ths but it is ok. Without the radio on I got bored very fast because it seems like there is no ambient music(?). Also does soemone know if it is possible to make the radio louder?

It has it's flaws (and its predecessors also had plenty) but IMO it's probably the best game out there right now and a top game where whole surpasses the sum of its parts.

I had a "moment" looting some lockers and listening to some old music on the radio, it just felt "OMG this is soo Fallout".

P.S. all this is my personal opinion.

I'd wish they would have used the Unreal 3 engine like Borderlands to eliminate some of those TES (engine) flaws/limitations.

You saw what Fox did to Mass effect?

Bethesda have made fallout into one of the most high profile releases of the year (and they kind of had too, the IP cost alot of money and 90% of the people buying it won't have heard of fallout before....) if they included sex, fox would have gotten a hold of it.

Thats the weird thing with American media (especially fox...) you can show a guys head exploding but any suggestion of sex and thats it. "Star wars meet debbie does Dallas, children will play this game and will have sex with each other".

Oh, and what does Fallout feel like? Alot of people are saying this game doesnt feel like fallout, but then what does that mean? Whats missing?

Definitely feels like a rightful heir to the Fallout name. The atmosphere is stunningly accurate, the writing is about 90% true to the series, the gameplay and general "feel" of the game is undeniably Fallout. I remember the hours I spent with the lights off, staring into a chinsy little 14" monitor and playing Fallout 1 and 2 almost religiously - and hell, it can be hard to accept any fundamental change to a series you love, but I relived that same drawing, immersive experience when I turned on Fallout 3 and left the vault for the first time.

So far, my only complaint is with the music. The radio is outright limited and repetitive and the ambient music (which is all too rare to begin with) stinks. I'm just glad my one problem with Fallout 3 is the one most easily fixed.
