Fallout 3:Locations from FO2

The west coast storyline isn't complete, though, the Vault Experiments still need to be explained, for instance.
The Vault Experiment is a nation-wide thing, no? It can be explained anywhere.

Not that I see a reason why it would be imperative to have FO3 take place elsewhere, especially not in the middle of the fucking Pacific.

" I think Fallout should be set, y'know, with this guy that sits on a chair for a year. "

I was thinking ...

If you started Fallout 3 near a few places from 2, that you could pull off a plausible story off, or excuse of some kind to be blunt, then you could start the game say in the remains of Vault city and Gecko N.P.
The NCR no longer exist , something wiped out Chi in the San Fran, or they disappeared suddenly.

From then on you find yourself drawn somehow into final destruction of Gecko and Vault city and you flee with refugees into new territories. And i would make it so that you are one of the ones responsible for it , unwillingly but responsible.
than you could decide what to do about it.
Survival, traveling alone or with the others, fighting for yourself or for something else, protecting the rest of refugees or not...and so on....until you stumble into new locations.

Thats a simple example, without many details.
You could prolong the players stay there and give him few opportunities to visit a few more locations or find out about the past. It all depends how much connectivity you want, and how many details you put into that kind of beginning.
But maybe it could be pulled off in a smaller amount. And to use it as a story instigator not just as a dead weight.

I think FO3 should be in the middle of the USA or near the Great Lakes. Heh. New Albany.

Anyway, I'm not sure if California's the best choice, but seeing as the last two games involved the same bloodline, I won't be surprised or too disappointed. I'd love to see Junktown and/or Klamath again.

But then, that would mean that the player's actions didn't have any consequence after all, because the same thing happens. That's why, if a past location appears in the game, they should follow a certain ending from that past game, to show that what you did did have an impact on the world.

Well no...not in this case with the Vault city.
Lets take it that you got the ending where Vault city and Gecko collaborated and lived together.
Alright...so they live and live like that a number of years as the NCR and Chi from Frisco are disappearing or crumbling.
Then you come along and the rest happens.

_edit_

Luckily there is no -living hapily everafter- in Fallout.

I vote for midwest to West coast, being able to revist old haunts (okay the west coast can be an expansion pack)
