Fallout 3 Maps

Vault Maker has been tinkering with his Fallout google maps to figure out the different locations in Fallout 3. Here is the result, showing all the locations we know of and marking locations spotted on the PipBoy map but as yet unnamed. The first image is of the whole US with locations from all 5 Fallout games overlaid.

Does anyone know how accurate Fallout 3 environments will be compared to the real world locations?

Will distances be shrinked?

Are all of the DC metro stops, and the area around them, accessible?

This is great, thanks for making these Vault Maker.

One question though, why is Germantown highlighted when it's outside of the game's map?

That's the real-life location of Germantown.

Not so sure if it's outside the map. Isn't it just in the large wasteland area outside of DC?

I guess it depends on what the large green square represents, I was under the impression that it was the boundaries of the Fallout 3 map, that is unless you can 'zoom out' in the pipboy.

I'm sure the areas outside of downtown DC will be compacted a bit to make the distances a bit less insane to travel, and fit certain elements (pre-war cities and such) inside the map. As far as I know they are trying to make the downtown area fairly accurate.

Rivet city has looked intriguing to me ever since the first concept piece of it. I like the aircraft carrier idea. I hope they don't just make it some feral ghoul base or something, it would make for a pretty unique town or trading post.

Ah yes, so it is, the Vault wiki confirms. It strikes me as a dangerous place for a large population hub with the downtown area being infested with muties and all, seems like they'd be cut off from caravans as well as being annoyed by supermutants. Nevertheless, interesting idea for a settlement.

Man, what does the world of Fallout 3 feel pathetically small compared to those of Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Van Buren, and Tactics.

Um.

Because it is pathetically small?

Or at least from initial appearances it does.

Personally, I'd like how each town in the original games had their own flavor.

I know I know, I just wished the Bethesda boys realized this too.

Yes, because if the distance each location could have its own character, so far I have seen nothing like that in Fallout 3.

I find it also rather convenient that if there is a threat to the world that it is so geographically close to the Vault.

1. We don't really know how distances will "feel" in Fallout 3. Going from Settlement #2 to Settlement #3 could feel roughly like making it from Junktown to the Hub or something like that. Locations seem to be spaced out across the map in roughly the same way.

2. If we accept there's a vault in DC and accept there's a threat to the world in DC it's not much in the way of artistic license to assume that a game can follow someone who comes out of that vault and encounters that threat.

3. They've said they specifically tried to make settlements unique - so far we haven't seen much of anything in broad detail, even Megaton.

4. ???

5. Profit

Exactly ;)

Don't worry you can always hide the limitations imposed by using other peoples technology by pretending you want to cram more into less .. while at the same time cramming everything and the kitchen sink as far as previous features go...

That said the world seems small to me... sure towns in the originals were tiny but the way the world map worked was like the text worked -- it employed your imagination to fill in the gaps and paint the image.

Too bad it wont have vehicles .. next gen my ass .. even tactics had hummers (sucky but still)

One thing I don't like is that downtown washington DC is cut in a straight line to the east. Feels a little unnatural, and I wonder how will it be in the game.

I dunno. Driving around the wasteland in a car or even a Half-Life 2 style buggy in first person perspective would feel pretty fucking stupid if you ask me. I kind of like the idea of wandering around on foot, it evokes a stronger image and feels more appropriate given the setting.
