The official site just put up a launch statement which reads in its entirety:
Fallout 3 Available October 28

Major Launch Planned for the Winner of E3 2008’s “Best of Show”

August 20, 2008 (Rockville, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax Media company, announced today that its highly anticipated title, Fallout® 3, will be available on store shelves and online in North America on October 28, 2008 and in Europe on October 31, 2008. Developed at Bethesda Game Studios – creators of the 2006 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® – Fallout 3 is slated for release on the Xbox 360®video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and Games for Windows.

“We are very excited to let gamers get their hands on Fallout 3, the latest chapter in this beloved and highly acclaimed franchise,” said Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda Softworks. “To meet the huge demand for this title by our fans worldwide, we are planning one of the biggest launches of any game released this year.”

Fallout 3 features one of the most realized game worlds ever created. Set more than 200 years following a nuclear war, you can create any kind of character you want and explore the open wastes of Washington, D.C. however you choose. Every minute is a fight for survival as you encounter Super Mutants, Ghouls, Raiders, and other dangers of the Wasteland.

Hailed as one of the most anticipated games for 2008, Fallout 3 has already won numerous awards including Best of Show from the official Game Critics Awards at E3 2008, a selection voted on by an independent group of journalists from 36 leading North American media outlets that cover the videogame industry.

Fallout® 3 has not yet been rated by the ESRB.
Update: The European version of the press release has one significant difference at the end:
Fallout® 3 is rated PEGI 18+.

Oh noes what will I do with myself for the 3 extra weeks that I originally planned?

...

I could always make my own Vault Boy self gratification 'puppet' to help pass the time...

erm?

Since when has a launch a size?
I mean... the game will be shipped and standing in stores. Except for shipping shortages... what could be bigger or smaller in that regard?
Do they plan on sending out flying merchants to knock on your door and offer it?

They are throwing so much money in PR that the launch will definitely be noticed, at least the mainstream game media will notice (magazine covers and reviews all around).

Small launch=put it on the shelves in major stores

Huge launch=put it on every possible sales shelf in America, put a BoS armor dude in every major store in every major city. Get every store possible to have a different piece of pre-order swag to excite the most possible attention....

That sort of thing...

That sort of thing...

So in other words, distract the buying public with shiny things so they don't realize until afterwards they bought a fairly average game (if it even runs on their system). Sounds about right to me.

The end of the world got a date...

Uhn...

Dooms day for the franchise :(

More like a "division of the waters day", with the old games fan on one side and the new game fans on the other.
And i see the waters turning red for awhile after the reviews.
Eventually both sides will agree that the game was not so perfect, like it happened with Oblivion, making BS smile again at their huge PR driven sales.

Edit: i promise not to use more bible events references, because people will think i'm a religion fanatic, with this name and all, when in reality i'm a practicing atheist.

Yep.

And we all know that the end of the world is when Fallout 4 comes out, December 2012...duh.

Finally a firm release date.
Can we get some kind of requirement specification now please?

I always reference the bible, it happens when you're a Catholic-turned-Atheist.

ALL HAIL ATHE!

But back on topic, October 26th is a weird date if you really think about it.

Really.

Think about it.

I initially misread "Best of Show Award" for "Best Story".

My eyes must be hurting after reading this, reminding me of Osca®s or something in the vein.

Interesting, that's in the release week of that other over-hyped "RPG", Fable II. And the PS3 port for BioShock.

Looks like they're looking for a slug-match with Molyneux. And a slew of other titles, including Gears of War 2 which hits a week later.

That's pretty gutsy.

Not shattering news as the US release is also been made public but here is the Insidegamer article:

Apparently there is a huge demand of fans all over the world.

Edit: sentence error

If you mean that handful of people I have seen on the board, so far I haven't encountered any in person.
In general I don't think most care that it is called Fallout, it might as well have been called 'generic post apocalypse adventure stat shooter' and they probably still would buy it.
