So you thought handing out GotY awards was so 8 months ago? Not so! G4 does this thing all over again in their G-Phoria event where viewers of G4tv get to vote on their favourite games released within a year's time.

Fallout 3 was nominated in the categories of Game of the Year, Best Role-Playing Game, Best Downloadable Content (with Broken Steel), Best Voice Acting, Best Soundtrack and Longest Lasting Game. So which, if any, of these awards did it win? All of them! It's not like the game didn't already have a wall of trophies, though.

Thanks to Xevrex.

No matter how much you hate Bethesda or FO3 you have to admit that they did a very good job making the game resonate with the vast majority of "core" gamers out there....

Even though many of the old FO1 fans and the FO2 fans may hate it, it really was desighned well from the standpoint of its target audience...

Again, the quote:

"Thank you for making a game that lets us kill many, many things." -- Morgan Webb on Fallout 3

Honestly, this just worries me. Fallout is supposed to be an RPG and all the gamers care about is that they can kill a multitude of things with a multitude of weapons. It's so disappointing.

^^^^^^

Do you actually still care about the opinion of these people?

They probably also praise how you can dress your character up in various outfits and hats.

The problem is, when the LCD is your target market, things get pretty fucking shallow, gimmicky, and shiny with very little substance or structure to back it up. Their games have no sustain, no lasting appeal. When you're overriding design philosophy is to pack as much "kool shit" into a game as possible, with little regard for much else, the end result is a muddled, incoherent, gimmicky mess.

I won't deny they know how to scratch the common gamer's ass, but they doesn't mean they know jack shit about making quality RPGs.

Best Voice Acting? If that was the best of the year, I don't know, that's says a lot about how poor the rest of the industry's offerings were, than it does about FO3's VO being any good. It was quite bad, and cringeworthy.

Longest Lasting? That really doesn't correlate to how good it was, so I'm not sure what the purpose of an award like that is. If it's big and hollow, well, it's big and hollow. So what?

By this point none of them are really surprising...

Except for Best Voice Acting; surely even the most munchkiny gamer couldn't say FO3 had good voice acting...

Best Role-Playing Game

Best game categorized under "role-playing" (by their taste), not best game for role-playing.

Best Downloadable Content (with Broken Steel)

It could be best Fallout 3 DLC, but broken content winning award? It seems most games don't make DLCs.

Best RPG my ass. The game is so badly designed, so horrendously balanced, and generally incompetently executed that it doesnt really matter what stats you choose, what skills you pick or what perks you choose. Nothing you do matters or effects anything really.
"best Computer-LARP" would be far more suited title.

The only thing that one has to admit is Bethesdas excelent marketing efforts.

Thing is just that you dont get so far an award for "Marketing" effects. Thus why they get all the others. Oh and of course cause most competitors are retarded doesnt mean youre the best runner in the olympics. I mean seriously best RPG of the year? What kind of "great" RPG was released during Fallout 3s release anyway? Are there even now some "good" ones out? Same to other games.

How comes that the awards do not also somewhat include bugs as well. Best DLCs? Again which company is throwing so much out of them. On the other side most of Bethesdas DLCs are full with bugs.

I haven't followed the games industry closely for years, so I don't know if they still make RPG's, or at least some 3D real-time "RPG's" to pass the award dealers screen, and was this title robbed. But I would assume Fallout 3 deserves the RPG of the year title. Now it doesn't tell how good Fallout 3 is but rather how bad everything else is if a poorly designed FPS wins an RPG award plus others.

edit. Of course there is always the marketing department pulling strings, but I have the impression there just aren't any RPG's around? At least untill the Age of Decadence.

Look at the RPG category:
Tales of Vesperia, Fable II, Fallout 3, Sonic Chronicles, and Star Ocean.

Its a bunch of bad choices left up to a bunch of G4tv.com readers.

Yeah, well, current-gen journalists don't know shit about good voice acting.
Or about good rpgs.
Or about good games in general.

BUT! Can you extract sarge's rant in mp3 or wav? I could use it for my own evil purposes.
Agree,

Haha I don't wanna know what you're up to but you will probably come a long way with him 8-)

But it's not my upload, and I also don't know how to rip sounds from Youtube with my new soundcard... My last one was easy with it, but the new one seems to not have that function. Stupid.

I just can't stand G4 anymore. I don't even know why they got rid of TechTV. Is everything getting catered to morons now?

How did it get longest lasting? The game can be beat in an hour. Are they talking about all the empty, meaningless locations that add nothing to the game?

Yes, and it's been so for quite a while.

Hmm... its the middle of 2009 and there are still gaming awards being given out for 2008 games? Why? :?
