Fallout 3's commercial success

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Something many of you are aware of and worth discussing is the measureable commercial success of Fallout 3. For details see here.

In spite of the fact Fallout 3 doesn't live up to our expectations as a Fallout sequel, it seems many more people out there like it for what it is. I discuss it here.

What do you think the future of Fallout is given the superior financial success of Fallout 3 over Fallout 1/2?

Do you still hold out hope for a truer Fallout game?

[Edit] FYI: Bethesda has announced plans for a sequel.

More Fallout is always good, no matter how derivative.

If they made a Half-Life 3, but it was a dating sim instead of an FPS do you think people would say "More Half-Life is good Half-Life?" I doubt it.

If it sold well and people liked it for what it was (i.e. like Fallout 3 - regardless of a general consensus here at NMA from many forum members). Then, yes, absolutely people would say something like that

Okay let me rephrase that, do you think the original fanbase would say that about the game?

No freaking clue... in the case of Fallout 3, the original fan base really has little bearing on how well it sold, how well it received by the general gaming populace, and if games like that will continue.

My guess is that the hardcore HL fan would complain about such a weird follow-up. How a follow-up like that sells and gets rated has only partial bearing on what the original fan base thinks.

If you just want some one to tell you "hey, people would hate it and it won't do well in the future" because that's the answer you want hear then:

hey, people would hate it and it won't do well in the future

;)

Hmmm, well I suppose you have a point. I wouldn't be pleased though. But that's just me. Maybe there's going to be a gigantic flood of dating sims in the coming months (well other than Japan. They already have that).

I can see it now, Starcraft 3 Dating Sim.

I wrote somethign similar on another post before I saw this post, so I'll cut to the chase.

Are the gaming industry incapable of supporting the hardcore RPG gamers without going bankrupt or at the very least losing money? Are there no means of satisfying the mainstream audience and yet at the same time delivering something more for the geeky masses yearning to breath free?

I say hardcore RPG gamer, because it doesnt seem to apply to other hardcore genre players. If a hardcore FPS/adventure/stratedgy/sports gamer wants to enjoy a game its not a big deal to alter the setting of the game in some minor way at very little additional cost to the game designers.

However for a hardcore RPG gamer, its not simply a tweak of the resource allocation, mouse timing or damage formula. Hardcore RPG gamer want smart dialogues, intricate plots, and a means to resolve a problem in a multitude of creative ways. That's not something game designer can simply provide in the difficult setting menu without changing the game in some fundamental ways.

So then are Hardcore RPG gamers simply too cost prohibitive to the gaming industry?

Statement:

"So many people are buying Fallout 3, IT HAS TO BE AN AWESOME GAME!!! (lol)"

Analogy:

"Hey people! From now on let's eat shit, because billions of flies can't be wrong!!!"

Honestly, I don't really care for the sales, because lot of people were cheated into buying a product they sooner or later disliked. Of course lots of people do like it, but then, I don't care much about their opinion on the matter.

American superhero movies also tend to do well at the box office compared to other movies, but I don't see that that stops decent movies being made.

Straight FPS Fallout games with such tempting titles as "Fallout 4: Mutant Carnage", "Fallout 5: Red Radiation" and "Fallout 6: Red Mutant Carnage Radiation".

Do you still hold out hope for a truer Fallout game?

Uhm... no. Hope is a bad thing.

Name some new movies that are good becouse i dont wana waste my life watching crap...thank you...

Any way we blame USA and $ for bad movies, games, silicon tits, wars, dumb and dumber people, barbie and so on

gregor_y, I don't blame the US for everything. Without Uncle Sam we wouldn't have Fallout! ;)

As for new movies being made, well I'm in the business of looking after my 2 year old boy, which barely leaves any room for a game every now and then, never mind a movie!:) I just know that historically speaking good movies have been made though the last one I could actually get to watch was at least a year ago!

I'm guessing the next Fallouts will be more FPSish than FO3, with more explosions, mini nukes, bigger mini nukes, more evil baddies you have to kill, because Bethesda has a franchise for a good game (which could be even a good RTS). And probably those games will still be called true RPGs.

Do you still hold out hope for a truer Fallout game?

How? The franchise is already bought and turned into something not Fallout.

Only modding might do something. 2, 4, 10 years? Dunno.

The gamers are getting dumber because the games are getting easier. If developers improved games' difficult levels, putting more and more thinking in them, and also more consequances (more true-RPG games), gamers (kids) will eat it up anyway. Or at least, make games (RPGs) with nice graphics- so they will like the look of them, and with more choices to be good and evil.

Fallout 3 has more fun to be evil than a good guy, and being evil (even being good) you usually about killing people. Killing is bad, m'kay, but there are many more ways to be even more bad than a murderer, and the same thing is with being a better guy than someone who gives some money to the poor.

So there are improved mininukes not because people are getting dumber, but because Bethesda made mininukes, and more people play FPS not because they are getting dumber, it's because most of the games are like those "mindless shooters". Developers (like Bethesda) are forgeting about the basics in the games. They think all games should now be in FPP and with a lot of shooting.

There is also problem with people (not because they are getting dumber), they are trying to make games more "immersive" and more "realistic", just to run away complitly from the real world we're living in, because it's a crappy world, with grey colour's scale. I'm not saying that games are wrong or something, I love games and they should exist, but they should stay on the line of "games" not another world where you can run away from the real world.

There was once one episode of sci-fi serial "Sliders", where people were wearing virtual reality glasses, and living in that virtual world just to run away from reality. But the reality started becoming more and more messed up, because everyone was living in the dream world, leaving the real home bahind...

You know i was being sarcastic?

Try not to be sarcastic on the internet too often, it's pretty hard get the joke sometimes, especially when people don't know much about you.

Im only most of time so if i write something think about it :)

Any way your right but fault is on both side players and companies...players for buying this crap and companies for brainwashing poor kids...

How dare you doubt the flies! They are the most intelligent... um... insects! Yeah! And they're majority!

Between the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC versions of Fallout 3, sales of the game have earned more than $300 million worldwide in its first week of availability, according to creator Bethesda Softworks.
"Approximately 4.7 million units" have been shipped since the title's October 28 release, a figure that Bethesda characterizes as "record sales."
Continuing, the official announcement cites a number of critics who lavished the title with praise, while pointing out that the game topped sales charts in nearly every region it was available. Notably absent is Japan, where the game goes on sale December 4.

Think people! With this kind of money Bethesta will be able to pay decent writers to make a better fallout 4. There is always hope!

Also, with the massive popularity of a thing with the word "Fallout" in its box means that the classic fallout's will have increased attention and the demand for a decent postapocaliptic CRPG will increase!
