Interplay has expanded its game portfolio on GameTap with the original Fallout. Press release.
ATLANTA – June 2, 2008 – GameTap, the first-of-its-kind broadband entertainment network from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.), announced today an expanded partnership with Interplay Entertainment Corp. (OTC BB: IPLY) that now includes multi-year worldwide rights for the company’s titles to be available for digital download in its online store and for subscription play. Under the new agreement, Interplay titles will also be made available for free play on GameTap’s ad-supported website www.gametap.com.

“Interplay has been and continues to be a great partner of GameTap,” said Ricardo Sanchez, vice president of content and creative director for GameTap. “By expanding on our previous deal, GameTap will now feature more of Interplay’s top titles including their widely successful Fallout titles.”

As part of this expansive agreement, GameTap will now feature additional Interplay titles, including the critically acclaimed Fallout, Descent and MDK. New and previously featured titles, such as the Earthworm Jim series, will be added to the subscription service, GameTap’s ad-supported website, and also sold in GameTap’s online digital retail storefront.
Link: press release (GameBanshee).

Im confused, i thought they sold the rights to fallout?

No, they sold the Fallout license. That's not the same thing as selling the older games.

You are on the greatest source of Fallout info on the planet (uh...barring the Vault), use it
Fallout license

* Full rights and ownership of Fallout are owned by Bethesda Softworks LLC (Bethesda)
* In the purchase deal, Interplay Entertainment Corp. (Interplay) has retained the right to produce a Fallout MMO if it is started before April 9 2009 and "succesfully launched" before April 9 2013.
* The right to exploit the Fallout 1/2/Tactics/BoS sales has been retained by Interplay. Money from sales of those games goes to Interplay.

It will probably give some people the opportunity to play the two first episodes, which is a good thing. It is also probably an indirect way of promoting Fallout 3 which I cannot decide yet whether it is a good or bad thing.

So... is this a very good thing, or a very bad thing?
Can't possibly see how it's bad. If people who've never had a chance to play Fallout do so because of Gametap, that's a good thing.

It may indirectly help promote FO3, which you might consider a bad thing, but that juggernaut of hype has been rolling for quite a while now anyway. People who buy games based on hype and name recognition are going to buy FO3 regardless.

this would be cooler to me if i didn't own the original cds and all. maybe this will generate income for that fallout mmo...

Its bad news guys. It means Interplay may receive some kind of revenue from this deal. However small anyone can see that revenue will go towards the much despised Fallout mmo. Or just go to trying to bail themselves out of debt. Either way we lose.

I am not so pessimistic towards the Fallout MMO. They already got Anderson, so they have more old fallout people working in the Fallout MMO than the entire Bethesda has, so that has to count for something.

This is really Odd i just got a free game tap account and was on my way here to ask about it but i giess i can post my question here: Do you get better service with gold because I keep getting some weird errors on it, but hey its free. I wouldn't mind paying $10 for a few months for Hitman, Thief and Tomb raider. Anyway is it worth it and if so what would youz recommend.

Er, what?

They clearly are moving to generate revenue from their back-catalogue, but what is the problem there?

Interplay is a company that once made great games, still has great IP, and could - barring the kind of stupid mismanagement that precipitated the entire crisis in the first place - make more great games. Why would you be so hostile to their continued existence?

Who the hell despises a thing which doesn't exist?

There are huge obstacles to creating a great Fallout MMO, but isn't it a little early to judge where that one is going?

The only problem I've ever had with the Interplay was their treatment of Black Isle and Van Buren, and the shadiness of Caen's business style. I remain unconvinced that the company is really viable, but I'm not sure that I want to see it dead.

Hola everyone, long time vistor of NMA, finally registered.

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents about the FO MMO. I know there is quite a bit of anti fallout mmo (and mmo in general) sentiment among old school RPG players, but I'm optimistic about this game if it comes to fruition. MMO's in there current state are pretty sad, and I'll agree they have little to nothing in common with a good CRPG, (do people still use that term? haha, ill go back to playin meh gold box games after this post) but to think they all have to follow the whole numbers grind formula and that there will never be innovation in the genre is a bit narrow minded in my opinion. Idealistically, I think a pen & paper type ruleset played with thousands of people is an awesome prospect.

The most common complaint I hear about a potential FOOL is that having tons of players ruins the atmosphere, as Fallout is supposed to be desperate and lonely. While I can come halfway and say there would definitely need to be some creative solutions put into place to preserve the atmosphere, the Fallout world is by no means empty in either FO1 or 2. The denizens of the hub (and others) describe it as the largest city they've ever seen, sprawling over vast amounts of space. In FO2 we have the NCR spreading, reestablishing order etc. And while I'm using my imagination I always pictured the Fallout cities having hundreds if not thousands of people more than the NPC's represented in the actual game. Also in the fallout universe, commerce is increasing, caravans run everywhere, there are raiders pillaging caravans etc. The world is definitely not empty. Skip ahead a couple hundred years past FO 2 and I'd imagine California to have plenty of sprawling cities, where masses of noobs running around wouldn't destroy the atmosphere :) We all know what prodigious breeders we humans are, especially when birth control is rare and there's not much to do! Also, the FO Online mod shows a great solution towards preserving the atmosphere of wandering alone in the wastes, no general chat channel, use of radios etc. (kudos to those who brought that to life, I've been having fun goofing around with it :)

Another thing that's got me optimistic is that Jason Anderson is not only the Creative Director for the project, he was the PR contact. So, presumably he got to choose who was hired for the 3 lead design positions that were posted on gamasutra awhile back. Also, these positions had things like "in-depth knowledge of the SPECIAL system" and such in the requirements. So by the data we have it can be assumed that 4 people who love fallout, one of whom being one of the original designers of the game, are working on a Fallout game. To me at least, this is far more encouraging than anything beth has offered up about FO3. If Interplay can actually pull this thing off I think at the very least we'd have an original MMO without tanks, healers, raid dungeons etc, as I seriously doubt that's the direction a fallout fan would take the game.

I say more power to Interplay, FO3 is already a lost cause for most of us, I can still be optimistic about the next Fallout game ;) Plus we all know FO3 is going to be huge with or without the old school fans, so Interplay will be able to ride that hype. I'd like to see them pull this off, more out of curiosity than anything. Hell, in some kind of Utopian mega future if everything goes perfectly we could see Interplay reopening Black Isle studios with Anderson in charge, Herve retiring with his fortune generated from a successful mmo, Anderson buying back the FO and D&D IP's and making games like Planescape: Torment 2 and FO4 (hahahaha, a guy can dream can't he?)

Idealistically, I think a pen & paper type ruleset played with thousands of people is an awesome prospect.
Unfortunately, I doubt many publishers or gamers think this is such a good idea. Which sucks, the P&P fanbase is getting smaller, or at least not growing at all.
EDIT: When is Fallout being put up? I couldn't find it on the website or the application.

Is GameTap available in Europe?

Not that I'm going to use it to get Fallout 1 & 2, because I'm a proud owner of both games...

Thanks.
