Fallout is a good old game

Good old Desslock has done a good old editorial on that good old game, Fallout.
Visions of Deathclaws dance in the heads of RPG fans as they anxiously snooze in anticipation of the October 28 release of Fallout 3. Will series devotees consider it too different from the classic RPGs that spawned it? The original Fallout RPGs were modest commercial successes compared to their swords and sorcery contemporaries such as Baldur’s Gate; will developer/publisher Bethesda be able to replicate the blockbuster success it enjoyed with Oblivion with a game in a non-fantasy setting? Will Fallout 3 successfully meld the best attributes of the Fallout franchise and the Elder Scrolls games, or will it prove to be a Frankenstein-like hodgepodge that disappoints rather than enthralls?
(...)
Fallout is about making real role-playing choices. It’s about creating a highly customized alter-ego and making distinct decisions that meaningfully affect your character’s journey. It’s choosing either to aid post-apocalyptic NPCs or to punch them in head [Or groin! –Ed] until you hear the lamentations of their children. It’s embracing the seemingly insufferable task of keeping your Mad Max–inspired hapless canine pet alive against chain-gun-wielding super-mutants, and eschewing potentially more beneficial character traits in favor of reducing foes to a “bloody mess.” The game constantly delivers a range of nuanced choices, and considerably fewer subtle alternatives, that collectively ensure players have a highly personalized experience, which is the essence of roleplaying. In terms of offering role-playing depth, Fallout has a paucity of peers, and it’s still worthwhile to track it down if you never journeyed into its apocalyptic wasteland.

yes, because its a real time FPS

non-fantasy setting?

non-fantasy? they have magic wielding zombies, for Allah sake

Fallout is about making real role-playing choices

what is a role-playing choice?

It’s choosing either to aid post-apocalyptic NPCs or to punch them in head [Or groin! –Ed] until you hear the lamentations of their children

We have a definition of Fallout 3 morality...oh and you can't punch them in a groin

I just want everyone to note the sixth comment by gunnyktrain. He states that he liked fallout:pos the best. Feel free to point and laugh.

mulaalia: You are whining where there is no whining to be warranted. The article is a really interesting read, written by someone who obviously loves the original games, and attempts to approach Bethesda's Fallout 3 in a quite neutral way. I see no reason to mock him as you do - I found the article to be great, and not tipping the scales in favour of neither the old nor the new fans. As it should be.

Edit: As Texas Renegade brings up; are you sure you didn't misunderstand what the article is about? If so, do yourself a favour and simply click on the link in order to access the actual article. It's about remembering Fallout, not propagating Fallout 3.

I agree, I was just trying to a point the difference between Fallout 3 and its predecessors, not to diss Desslock, you misunderstood me

Truth be told i posted before I read the whole article, although I like the way Desslock wrights I simply can't agree with his optimism concerning Fallout 3

Hey man, there's always one. 17000 people bought PoS, at least one must've liked it.

Also guys if you're looking for Desslock's opinion on Fallout 3 here's a good place to start. Desslock is one of the most hardest corest fannest fans around.

Understood. It just felt a bit out of place to start talking about "what's wrong with Fallout 3" when the article is about Fallout more than anything.

He also stated that its a heresy, so that's saving him from the wrath of the inquisition, no?

:D Reminded me of the Conan movie (lamentation of their woman).

I thought the thread was about the fact that The Fallout series are selling well at GOG.com, and i agree with desslock approach to Fallout 3, he cannot be like me for instance, he has to be professional about the whole ordeal, while I can just point at the shitty design choices BS made and criticize the heck out of it.

hey that reminds me we still haven't seen even a screenshot of BS's rendition of the deathclaw. it must be really embarassingly bad.

I hope they don't have a screenshot of the deathclaw. I would consider that a spoiler. I want the first time I see it to be when I play the actual game. :P

And yes I know deathclaws likely would not be this far East, but not so much as the BoS and super mutants.

Deathclaws are just mutations (with variable origin accounts, but they're not local anyway), no reason for them not to be on the east coast anymore than radscorpions or molerats.

Though if you really wanna nag, they probably shouldn't be called deathclaws on the east coast, since that is a name that stems from western legend. But eh.

If they're close to the released concept art (and so far most creatures have been) they're basically similar, maybe a bit more demon-like, and more lithe and agile.

It shouldn't be too hard to get a deathclaw right. Even Fallout: BoS got this one. Tactics is the only Fallout game I know of that got the deathclaws wrong, and I somewhat think this was done just for the sake of team color. I could be wrong though. *shrugs*

I wouldn't say this deathclaw is "done right".

BTW, according to Matt Norton, Fallout 2's lead designer, deathclaws were genetically engineered before the War by the military.

Yeah well Matt Norton is probably the only major Fallout dude (other than T-Ray and, of course, the elusive Jason Taylor) I never talked to so I DON'T TRUST HIM.

Still, no canon explanation, was what I was sayin'

uhh if they're holding back on the deathclaws because it's a spoiler then why are they showing footage of the super mutant behemoth and vertibirds in almost every preview video they put out

Err I kinda forgot about the invisible deathclaws, and I remember the others looking vaguely like deathclaws in the actual game. I couldn't see them in that much detail, I think? But at least they didn't have hair.

They were living in a cave system full of radioactive goo, so I suppose these changes they did to them could be possible.

Still, I'm hopeful that Bethesda is doing a much better job on them. Sorry for remembering FOBOS wrong. :P

If all the deathclaws in the spinoffs were to be considered canon, then I guess deathclaws adapt very well to their surroundings. Even in Fallout 2 they could speak. I'd consider them highly flexible as far as their genetics go. Then again.. I'm sure most people only consider Fallout 1's deathclaws to be canon.

As for the Vertibird, it seems more like scenery to me. The behemoth is kinda bla at this point, especially since he is supposedly a large super mutant. But yeah, screenshots of both of those are kinda like spoilers too.

I would say, "they gave screenshots of them so people could critique them and give them advice on how to make them look better" but apparently BS doesn't like suggestions. They just want people to look and say, "oooooh! purdy.. Okay I'm buying it now!"

They were genetically enhanced, that is where their speech came from. The Enclave gave them mentats and did other things. Thats where it came from. And that was only one group, the rest of the deathclaws in the game were pretty much large animals that hurt pretty bad.
