The second video developer diary for Fallout: New Vegas, discussing the technology and weapons, before moving into audio design.<blockquote>Today we’ve released the second video developer diary for Fallout: New Vegas. This time around, the team at Obsidian discuss the tech and weapons of Fallout’s world, as well as how they approached sound design and music for the game.</blockquote>

The thing started and I was like :wtf:

Then MCA appeared and I was like

PS: Inon Zur seemingly banging random notes on his keyboard. My life is complete.

Damnit Chris, don't say these stupid things about grenade machine guns being awesome.

Hehe, anways. I like the idea of that energy weapon, sounds like fun. The geckos look good.

They seem to be putting a decent effort into the sound design which I think is great. Having good sound effects goes along way to increase "immershun!1!!" and making guns feel powerful and dangerous.

Too bad that they couldn't go into more depth about music other than Inon saying "it's kinda like going back but also kinda different".
The seemingly heavy use of only a few string players (was it a quartet? didn't count) sounds like it could be a pretty interesting choice for much of the music.

I think it was confirmed it's a quartet in the first Bethesda podcast.
Personally I'd have liked it more if they used the piece of music they placed at the end with appropriate footage, not a generic courier running during the night.

No! No!!! Not the small computer again, no!!!
Oh but they're going to get smaller and smaller.
Hell, by Fallout 5 we're going to have todays top of the line cellphones. :D

What about this? We know already that there will be like three of them.

I thought that games had proper DSP effects these days so that you didn't have to record multiple versions of the same sounds for close/far. Then again, I don't think Fallout 3 had any audio DSPs at all (reverb, occlusion etc.), so maybe the engine just isn't capable of that. Wouldn't surprise me...

Does sound really nice though. :V

Also radio stations were already confirmed a while back K.

This video actually made me cringe *shudder* Most of the time it was at Inon Zur. I don't like his music. I don't like what he did with Fallout 3 and I'm sure I'll hate what he'll do with New Vegas. The most I hope for is something on the line of Tactics. At least that game had a semi-atmospheric soundtrack.

A lot of those guns look weak. The variety is nice, but what is the point if I have to spend 2 minutes just to kill a single creature with them.

MCA raving about the Grenade Launcher was laughable...

Nag nag nag.... This video sucked.

After I got a bit hyped about the game, this video kinda grounded me again. What a piece of ....

@ the Brabbling of MCA about the newer "awesome not fifties" weapons I kinda loled since I've read this here recently:

Ok, it's old and they don't talk exactly about those weapon thingies, but for me it sounds like a complete other MCA then in the video.

Even though the music is kinda different and feels different ( a slight arcanum touch with the string quartet) I just don't understand why they don't write decent ambient music like the old ones had.
Is that not "cool" enough? Meh.

The weapon sounds are finally decent, though.

I guess this was just a sort of gameplay vid. Not impressive to us story loving folks here, but hey, it is a game after all and you have to have decent gameplay in order to attract buyers. I wonder if there's gonna be another diary and what it will be about.

Was a bit weird that the grease gun and plasma pistol thingy seemed to be doing way more damage than the rifles.

What I meant was that I'm interested in information about music and content, not about how many or if there are radio stations

Glad they added a realistic shotgun instead of keeping that stupid PPSH-looking thing from Fallout 3.

Who knows, maybe it's still there?

BTW

What do modern firearms like the M4 or the Colt 1911 have to do with Fallout?

Good find, it seems like they're doing the exact opposite. Such a beautiful thing, hype, isn't it?: Back then they were hyping the 'old' audience by claiming to correct some of the design mistakes they made from FO2 onwards and talking about returning to the FO1 atmosphere and 'feel'. Nowadays, those same design mistakes are awesome design... a different audience to be hyped and all... lol.

That gun is older than my grandpa

So? how does that make it more fitting to the setting and less of a real world gun thrown in there, like all the other real world guns, because of a) lack of creativity, b) laziness, c) purposefully, to make the setting feel a bit more 'modern', more CoD-ish?
