Fallout: New Vegas reviews roundup #5

If it's valid to judge a game by its detractors, I might check this one out.

There's clearly a difference of opinion between what "Fallout 3" fans want from a game, and what fans of legitimate Fallout want from a game. It emphasizes the tragedy of Bethesda acquiring the rights to a franchise with a tradition and design philosophy fundamentally at odds with their own.

You should, it's worth it.

Oh yes!

Still, New Vegas is built an an engine at odds with Fallout's philosophy. And while we can give Obsidian a pass on that, we can't give the actual results a pass on that. The game still is what it is.

I would argue the bugs (More like reviewers ignored them) but I don't really agree with this. How had Fallout 3 better graphics for its time? Not only was Oblivion the more beautiful gamebryo game (Which may have to do with the setting) but the graphics were horrid even back then.

I think I would rather argue that the "unique" setting itself was more impressive in 2008 which made people ignore graphical faults.

I think you missed his point. He was saying that the graphics were the same but, roll the calender back 2 years, the "same" equated "more impressive" due to the lowered standards of the industry.

What about the engine do you feel is at odds with Fallout's philosophy? I'm willing to bet much of the franchise creators would disagree on your assessment of that too. It's a flawed engine, but the flaws are in the bugs and quirks, not necessarily the format.

Jesus, the RPS review shocked me. It's been a while since I've felt such a disconnect. Quinn is relatively new though, I understand, so I may just ignore anything he writes for the next few months until he lifts his game.

I'm still unsure. I mean at that time GTA IV was already out, and Infamous got its first hype. PC gamers already had Crysis. Its not like the standards weren't high back then. :|

I apologize, but I'm not going to go over this debate again. Sorry.

Or maybe RPS is entering decline with Kieron Gillen gone? Hah, good fun!

Again, though, I don't think he was trying to say the graphics were particularly impressive. Just that whatever people assessed of the graphics 2 years ago would be higher then than now. It had better graphics for its time seems objectionable due to games like GTA IV but keep in mind that today we have games which eclipse even that.

Actually, I agree with you. The only beautiful shot I remember in FO3 was created by lighting effects when you left the first vault (and, if memory serves, some of the transitional effects with the VR equipment). Compared to the rest of the industry it wasn't much to look at. I thought Oblivion looked better, actually (swaying trees, etc).

Ok, then.

About the second part that is kinda what I meant with setting in this case. When I talk with people regarding what they remember from FO3 it is always "When I first left the vault" "When I first visited Megaton" and so on. Naturally, in most cases there wasn't much substance to it but thats what I think Bethesda does very well on a visual level. Creating a first impression.

Fallout 3 mostly had a problem with textures when it came to competing with its contemporaries (as does New Vegas), but it did hold up fairly well in creating beautiful vistas and other static models (like the Vaults). Besides, big open-world RPGs like these are often given a pass on not being able to compete with corridor shooters or even open shooters of its era.

Overall FNV sounds better than I expected (even though my expectations were, to say the least, tempered), and that surprises me. Bringing back the good ol' Fallout 1 flavor was obviously too much to hope for, so I wasn't expecting that.

I'm officially willing to give FNV a chance. That's an upgrade.
