Fallout on the Gamer's Quarter

E-Zine/magazine The Gamer's Quarter has an article up about the original Fallout games. About half of it is the author enjoying the sound of his own voice and going off on random tangents about how much stuff he knows and how experienced he is at using a thesaurus, but surprisingly there's also some stuff about Fallout in there. After discussing realism and the frequency of death, the author wanders into analysing the storylines of the two games:
To some extent all RPG player characters are saviors of some world orders and destroyers of others, otherwise people wouldn't bother putting up with cumbersome play mechanics and turn-based mania. And both villains are, despite their bloodlust, not entirely unreasonable. The Master lacks some important data, but is driven by compassion of a kind. The Enclave has plenty of information and utterly no remorse, but is compelled by something that can be construed as a greater good.
(...)
In some ways it is disappointing that no apparent strands of any of the major world religions survive into the Fallout era (...) Perhaps the religion as we know it would die out simply from being trapped in a self-contained marvel of science with a small group of jump-suit attired busybodies, and some other means of providing meaning - and controlling population growth through rituals and rules concerning sexual relations - would be implemented.
(...)
Despite the carnage, suffering and despotism (despite even the lively slave trade), some still have a yearning for messiahs to save and destroy the world.
Link: Gamer's Quarter #8.

Thanks Travesty.

The road to perdition is paved with good intentions. The man who thinks he's right or on the side of God is the most dangerous of all.

Sorry for bitching over here, but I did`nt get any credit for bringing this information to the attention of nma.

You really want to be associated with that awful article?

It's not awful, it's just badly written. He might have a point, but he doesn't seem to be able to make it in between the stream of loghorrea.

Ummm, yeah I do. I mean I did not write it so...

But I noticed that on pretty much all other posts had name of the person who noticed it and sent to nma, so I thought that I should get credit as well, regardless of the fact that if someone might not like what I found.

Thank you brother none for fixing it.

I asked Tim Cain about the Catholic church, he said Vatican City got nuked. I think Ausir preserved that conversation in the Wiki. He reminded me a few days ago via ICQ.

The conversation is available here

I don't think nuking the vatican could cause a disappearance of organised religion in post-apoc USA.

I really didn't feel like the lack of religion affected the Fallout atmosphere at all. After the apocalypse, people would most likely feel like they were abandoned, not seek for new hope. Think of the doomsayers wearing tattered clothing, dirty, and holding cardboard signs that say "This is god's punishment for the sins of man."

Religion is/was a big part of history, but should not be so once the world has ended.

I don't think all people would feel abandoned. Some people would feel abandoned, some would see it as an opportunity to start their lives anew without the burden of the decadent civilisation...

Survival > religion
Religion can help in survival by gathering people together, etc.
A community united by common values, faith, etc. have better chance of surviving together than a mixed group of random people.

Before reading the Fallout Bible I felt that Fallout shows the optimistic vision of the Future where Religion declines and is replaced by Science. Now I think that there are no RL religion groups in game because someone could get offended.

And religion *does* exist in Fallout, albeit in the background. See Dharma in Shady Sands, or the Followers, for instance.
