hey Per, does your silence about the spectacles/glasses/whatever mean that there's no effect on first aid through modification of your PE stats? just wondering if i'm totally delusional.

PE affects First Aid, but Shades/Spectacles don't affect PE.

that's the problem with playing too many mods i guess.

i'm sure i once played a game where the spectacles from the scorp in broken hills gave you a negative PE modifier if you already had 5 or above PE and a bonus if you were low on PE (bringing it up to 5 PE max iirc).
(shades still didn't do shit though)

problem is that i uninstalled FO2 a while back because i had mucked about with a bad combination of mods. installed it on my netbook though, but clean without mods. so i'll probably never know for sure.

so there's a chance i'm just totally and utterly insane... which isn't all that farfetched really.

could it be that you are remembering Arcanum, in which spectacles do indeed give you a +1 to Per if your Per<7, otherwise it gives you -1 to Per?

possible and i thought of the possibility as well (i've played FO1, FO2 & Arcanum til i dropped), but i suspect someone might have made a mod to make these items useful in FO as well.

but it's possible my mind got entangled.
 
It's the third round! Shock! The deadline is the end of Sun 21st Jun as measured by Central European Time, giving you a week and a half to get your answers ready. Answers by PM or by plain text email.

The questions:

0. Name a character identified directly in dialogue as owning brahmin. Members of the same family or enterprise owning brahmin jointly will be treated as equivalent answers.
1. Name a character who is invariably being held prisoner when you first enter the map they are on initially.
2. Name a non-robotic dog.
3. Identify a weapon item that can always be found lying on the ground or floor when you first arrive on some map. (The answer should consist of an item, not a specific instance or location.)
4. Identify a non-weapon item that can be purchased in dialogue (not barter) with no required exchange of goods or services except money.
5. Identify a way of increasing your Luck score.
6. Identify a perk whose effects relate exclusively to world map travel and random encounters.
7. Identify a creature type as defined by the wireframe picture shown when you make a called shot. The exact term used is not important as long as it's clear which one it refers to. Answers that could refer to more than one picture may be counted as less specific variants.
8. Identify a location where you can encounter a critter using a ghoul character model. Lenny doesn't count.
9. Identify a single choice, action or event that can earn you 10,000 or more non-combat experience points at once.

There are three new things about the rules which I will edit into the first post. One is further fiddling with the penalty formula; the second is that "unpatched only" content is out; the third concerns the phrasing of questions as follows. Previously, all the questions began with "Name..." and some of them somewhat tautologically included the phrase "named character". Now questions beginning with "name" must be answered with a proper name (not a rank, title, technical designation or reference to an unnamed character), while questions not involving names typically begin with the word "identify".

We're approaching the deadline and so far I've only received answers from RPGenius, Darek and zag. Unfortunately, if previous contests are anything to go by, there's not a lot more to come, as nearly all submissions have been made early on. Did everyone go away for the summer, or have people simply decided that this is a stupid idea? Would it help to extend the deadline? There are at least some people who seemed keen on playing again who haven't submitted this time.
 
I'm a bit overworked currently myself, I'm not sure if I'll find the time to send it this weekend.
 
Well, that was the deadline and no more entries. Any input on how to proceed from those who submitted would be welcome.

Hey if you judge that there should be a second deadline due to the small number of participants, that's cool as far as i'm concerned.

I say either wait some more, or scrap the whole thing.
If you have already corrected the answers I guess you can put them up, but otherwise I don't know if you need to bother (at least not on my account).
 
I'll be scoring the three of you separately in any case, so one of you will be the "proper" winner. But a few more people (five? six? seven!?) would go a long way towards making me feel the questions weren't wasted. I'm not too hopeful, but I'd like to give it another week.
 
colleague fired, IT boss on holiday and i'm the only one left with a clue how our IT infrastructure works. so basically i'm doing three full time jobs at once for the moment.

don't count on me to submit anything useful (not that you would anyhow).

Only two things are inescapable, the rare entries contest and taxes, and I'm not too sure about taxes.

I thought "The Chosen One" was a very clever answer (Bess!) until I realized it's not valid - it's not a name.

Westin also has them brahmin and I'm sure some other people.

Shadow-who-walks works with the raiders and is not a prisoner.

Alternative answers would include Joshua in VC, Elmo in Broken Hills, Oswald in NCR and all the psykers from Fo1.

I suppose this could be up for debate, but I don't consider the pariah dog to have a name as such.

I had a feeling some people would go for Sasha; I reckon this is what's known as a "Zeppo answer", something that receives a lot of attention because it appears to be more obscure than it actually is. Answers that went unpicked include Packard, Buck and Missy as well as Dogmeat.

As the person who submitted the car suggested, it is not actually an item, although the trunk technically is, but you can't pick it up, so it isn't.

Unpicked alternatives include Chuck and the two zeta scans in Fo2. Killing the PD and exploiting the PD bug were treated as the same thing, as it's just the act of killing the dog that makes your Luck go up, whether or not this takes it above your previous value. This could be regarded as another Zeppo.

Fortune Finder and Cautious Nature would also be valid picks. I'm not sure about Mysterious Stranger and Scrounger as they are used during caravan runs, which is not exactly world map travel, but in any case no one picked them so I don't have to think about that.

Nothing strange here, unless you count the fact that it's the only question will all unique and correct answers.

Wrong:

1 - The Den

While you do encounter Woody in the Den he's never shown, so no ghoul character model is involved.

"Los Angeles" should preferably have been given as "Boneyard", but it's clear what it refers to. Other valid answers would have been the Hub, Gecko, Broken Hills, the Cafe of Broken Dreams and maybe something else.

Giving the Vertibird Plans to Matt, destroying the Cathedral, blowing up the Enclave reactor or having it be shut down would also qualify.
 
Oddly enough, now that the results have been posted, I'm totally psyched for another round, even though I was pathetically unmotivated for this round.
