Always Darkest Before the Dawn
(Actually, Angela Bishop declared herself acting mayor only a few days ago, it just feels like longer because the battle at Vault City has been going on for so long in real time, yet it all took place in a single day. She wouldn't give an inaugural address until after the election, which is still months away. I may provide an opportunity for Jimmy to take his shot before that, but for now there are more things I want her to do.)
Halle Richter set her vertibird down in an open area in the ruins of Vault City. She had changed the codes and reprogrammed the computer so that the instruments would give the correct readouts, but for now she still relied only on her own hands and eyes. She got out and rocketed over to Rex.
"Sir!" she said, saluting. "We have a problem." She told him about her discovery. "I recommend that, first of all, we change all of our encryption keys."
"Good idea," he said. "This will cut us off from contact with our spies inside the Vault, but I haven't heard anything from them since early in the battle anyway. They've probably been caught."
"Maybe one of them talked, and that's how our system was cracked. Or perhaps we have a traitor. We also have to consider the possibility that the Amgine cryptosystem itself has been broken."
"But it's unbreakable! There are so many possible permutations that it would take forever for a supercomputer to crack the code."
"That Myron's a clever one, though, sir. He could have found a shortcut. Using all of the Vault's computers working together, he might have done it. The only truly unbreakable code is a one-time pad. We should start using them to communicate with our agents in the future."
"Okay. Let's change all of our encryption keys in the meantime. If they hack us again, we'll know if the cryptosystem is compromised."
Deep in the Vault, Harold reacted with dismay as he listened to the Enclave's communications. "I think they realized we hacked their system," he said. "All of their transmissions just turned to gibberish. They must have changed their codes."
"That means we can't hear what they're up to any more," said Eldon. "Of course, we couldn't when the battle started, either."
In Jack's quarters, Amy sat up next to him in bed and lit a cigarette. She stretched her arms and sighed. "That was fantastic!" she said. "I'm so glad I didn't kill you back at Devil's Canyon."
"That makes two of us," said Jack with a grin.
"I never thought I'd be able to feel this way again." When Jack looked at her questioningly, she went on. "Yup, you're not my first love. His name was Dave. He taught me everything I know about bounty hunting. I was his partner, and it soon became more than that."
"What happened?"
Amy fought back the anger and sorrow she felt at the memory. "Redemption happened." She puffed on her cigarette to calm herself. "We were out tracking down a childkiller when this guy crept up behind Dave and bit him. I put the man down, but it was too late. Dave was infected, and there was nothing that could be done. The serum hadn't been invented yet. All I could do was be with him, watching while Redemption took him over. I had to tie him down towards the end. Finally, the disease won and he snapped his bonds like they weren't there. He came right at me." Amy broke down in tears. "I had to kill him. The only man I ever loved...until now."
Jack embraced Amy, patting her on the back and letting her cry on his shoulder. "It's okay, Amy. Let it out."
"The Enclave's gotta pay for what they did!"
"They will. We're going to get through this."
Amy felt less afraid in Jack's arms, but she still couldn't help trembling. Their situation seemed hopeless. She yawned, utterly exhausted. Then she stubbed out her cigarette and cried herself to sleep in Jack's arms.
