Fallout - The game that wiped out the earth (YouTube movie)

Nope, too much wrong with the movie.

Heavily influenced by Mad Max, Star Trek and Hitchhiker's Guide? Aside from Mad Max, where the hell does he get that from? Did he just look at the special encounters and say 'Ooh, Star Trek, they must be heavily influenced by that!'

The vaults were also not government run and your family was not picked by the government to be in there.

Also, unless you really suck at the game, a minor error in character creation will never prove to be your downfall later on in the game. In fact, that would go pretty much against Fallout's principles.

Furthermore, it's not 'nucular', dammit!

Also, 'RPG Action Adventure game'? What the hell?

Lastly, I can't stand that guy's voice.

That all said, it's decent otherwise.

Nice find! Don't know who that guy is, but I've heard another Fallout related short film is going to show up soon. Let's keep vigilant!

~Maybe...~

Ah that song...

Nice video but plagued with lot's of wrong info. :)

Could be a nice video to teach bethesda how to make Fallout 3

What everyone is missing here:

This is free advertisement for Fallout, who gives a fuck if it is 100% correct?
The video is well-made and will raise interest in Fallout.

How narrow-minded can a person be?

Ehm, what? If you provide information, be sure it's correct. If something is incorrect you only make yourself look like an ass.

Should we also be happy when someone makes a movie about Fallout being 'the best action game ever!!!!!!!' just because it promotes Fallout?

Difference being, making a movie that bombs harms the franchise by making investors think twice about further interest in the series.

Making a youtube video which contains partially incorrect info whilst still promoting an old and (sadly) almost forgotten gem is good publicity and might raise some interest from non-fallout fans.

So what's your point? Don't be so ****** anal about correctness, just be happy that Fallout is still an issue on the web.

Wait, I'm not allowed to point out mistakes because this raises interest about a game that already has a shitload of interest across the web? Fallout is far from forgotten.

Do you know what the point is of pointing out mistakes? So that people know the mistakes and don't repeat them themselves. There are some very blatant errors in that video, so anyone who watches will get a *wrong* image of Fallout.

Check this out. At around 1'50" it becomes kinda interesting.
Are you trying to say that the Fallout 1 intro is uninteresting?

Everybody is entitled to his/her opinion, no question about that.
I just hate the arrogance of some people.
Far from forgotten?
A little help from youtube can surely not hurt the game.

Wrong image? The video presented a completely positive image of Fallout. There are some misplaced references to Star Trek... so what???
There are millions of crazy Trekkers out there, let some of them buy the game in false belief, they might enjoy it nonetheless.

It's good publicity for Fallout for fuck's sake!

Not everybody can be a Fallout god and know everything about the game.
There is nothing wrong with pointing out mistakes, but there is a lot wrong with just dismissing a valuable advertisement for the game by sheer arrogance and ignorance.
Just saying, that this video is crap and doesn't serve any purpose would be the last thing that should cross anyone's mind who cares about the game.

Gee, that's funny, because I didn't see anyone dismissing the movie.

Fallout is very well-known. It's not some underground, indie-game, Sepulcrum, it's somewhat of a legend. A lot of people know about the game, and a little video on youtube isn't going to change much about it.

What it is going to do is put the wrong ideas in people's heads about what is and isn't 'Fallout'. Which is bad.

I really like the movie, but obvious errors are there, but it is quite interesting.

Who wants interest raised in Fallout? Who wants public recognition? I'f rather Fallout remain obscure. Fuck the masses, and fuck any future Fallout games. FO1 is something beloved and sacred. Everything since (including FO2) has been complete cack. So fuck it.

Hey everyone,
I'm the author of the video (WarrockScuba) and I just read your comments and agree that there a few mistakes and I am planning to redo it and make a 2nd Edition.
I just thought id note that I made the movie for my college work, I needed to produce a seminar for my class about a game of my choice which I thought had good game design, It was entirely my own opinion, I had to show why I thought this game had good design throughout, thats why alot of people disagreed with me as that's my opinion.
I'm a huge Fallout fan (It's the game that inspired me to become a games designer) and thought id go the extra mile to produce a video for my class, I was given a distinction for it so I must of done something right!

Once again, I only wanted to make homage to this game, I didn't want to give people the wrong impression to those who hadn't experienced it yet.
Maybe you guys will help me with the 2nd Edition as It's been a while now and I wish to improve on it.
I'm about reading threads in the forum alot these days so I wont disappear, just drop me a PM or post in this thread and I will reply!

DAMN YOU SCUBA STEVE!

No seriously you're obviously a great fan and hard worker, but I'm even more impressed that Fallout not only inspired you to make such a thing, but also to go into game design. Great job...and funny username.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

P.S.

I remember playing Starcraft on Battlenet vs. someone with your name. Was it you?

What's next?

A Fallout Myspace page?

Ugh.

Also, Scuba, I realise that I am repeating a point, but I thought it was the most valid one made and I would like to be absolutely sure that you have absorbed it.

Nuclear, not nucular.

 Aye

My lecturer picked me up on it too!

I rendered the video at 3am when I did it, I didn't proof read it, thus, why I'm planning a 2nd edition.

Please don't bold all the text in your posts, it is rather annoying.

While I approve of the basic idea behind your video, the presentation is a bit lacking. A few trivial bits of incorrect information would be fine, but there are a number of errors, some of which have been pointed out. You could also improve your script and video a bit. Though I believe it was fine for your previous purposes.

First on the video, namely the skipping performance of the in-game cinematic sequences. You could dramatically improve those bits of your video by extracting them from the game directly, instead of using Fraps. Use a DAT extractor on your Fallout files, and find the MVE video files (since you can put together a video, this shouldn't be beyond you). You can then convert the extracted MVE movies to AVI format with this utility. You could also use more graphics from the game (such as the ending slides) by extracting them and converting them yourself (you can find utilities for that here).

Generally, I recommend you work hard on your script before you attempt a second version. It could stand some serious polishing.
  • You might want to revise your title. I understand your meaning with 'The Game That Wiped Out The Earth,' but it doesn't really flow very well.
  • "A world full of hybrid mutants" does not seem very accurate, unless you mean the animal life (which doesn't seem likely as you use a super mutant as a picture at that point of the narration). For intelligent life, ghouls and super mutants are relatively confined in the game; normal people are what you most encounter.
  • "A Soldiers Poem?" Where does that come from, what does it mean, and how does it fit in?
  • A minor point, but it is the "Overseer" of the Vault, not the "High Elder." It sets the wrong tone.
  • Avoid repetition (and run-on sentences). For example, the use of "water" in "...and told that the water chip, used for recycling the water supply, has blown; and needs to be replaced before your water depletes and your people die out." It doesn't sound very good.
  • When speaking about the combat system, you might want to say "hex grid" instead of simply "grid," which implies a square grid for most people.
  • Your description of action points is inaccurate. Especially "as each action you do costs a point," which is refuted in the very screen you are narrating against.
  • I would advise staying away from the generic post-apocalyptic art you use near the end, it confuses the setting for unfamiliar viewers.
  • I also agree with Sander's points.

Enjoyed this, but does need some editing to produce a truly stellar film. Minor script errors really need fixing. For example, you say "once the enemy has been vanquished you get the feeling of success as you see the points tally up" you never distinguish between exp. points and AP. You should introduce the "points" as "Action Points" as well.

You should try showing more of a real fight scene, not just your character decimating everything. It seems like your instinct was to cram in as many different fight scenes as possible, slowing down and showing a whole fight would help clarify things.

I realize that time constraints probably made some things impossible, but I would cut the FO intro out and jump right into it.

This is an excellent project though, I'm glad you got a good grade on it. Let's see some more.
