"It is said, war, war never changes... Men do, through the roads they walk and this road has reached its' end".

I like Fallout New Vegas Dialogue the most.

Fallout 1 and 2 are also great, but I felt more attached to characters in New Vegas.

I feel the same way. Which is saying something because they all move like robots. And have the facial expressions and animations of a lizard posing as human. A bored lizard that hates his job.

FALLOUT 4's dialogue system is one of the worst dialogue systems in any game that I have ever seen. First of all, a lot of people like to call it "Mass Effect" style. But this is plain wrong. Why? Because at least in Mass Effect there are sometimes more than 4 dialogue choices, and sometimes less. But as Trainwiz once said, there need to be FOUR, exactly FOUR, no more, no less.
Now there are many other reasons why Fallout 4's dialogue is terrible. One of the most blistering is the fact that there are many, many times where you do not know exactly what your character is going to say. And there is usually no way to "just say no!" in Fallout 4's dialogue, you are required to do something and you only can say yes or walk away. Unless you want to ask for more money, which brings me to my next point.
SKILL CHECKS make your skills useful. One of Fallout (GRUPS) 's five rules was that there should be multiple solutions to a problem. So in Fallout NV for example you can tell Jack a better way of making a rebreather if you're not the fighting type. But the only skill check that's in Fallout 4 is charisma for money (which doesn't make sense sometimes, for example some scrawny guy comes up to you and says he can kill those bandits, but he wants more money, how can you trust him that he's a good fighter just because he sounds nice?) and that STILL doesn't resolve the problem. One of the best parts of Skill Checks in New Vegas was that it would sometimes resolve the problem.
Also the worst part of Fallout 4's dialogue is the fact that the voiced protagonist is just tone-neutral dialogue which sounds the same every time and the same voice on every play-though, no matter your age, race, etc. I WOULD RATHER IMAGINE IT SOUNDING REALISTIC than LISTEN TO THE SAME UNREALISTIC THING!
And there's another issue, Fallout 4's dialogue does not have meaningful character interaction (the best example here would be how you treat your companions in Dead Money) in the dialogue. Most of the time you're just doing things for the quest or either giving a mostly positive or somewhat negative (but still "yes") answer to a question like in the main quest. I mean, there aren't a lot of moments like THIS in Fallout 4:

So anyways I don't like Fallout 4's dialogue very much. NV is first for me and the classic Fallouts were great as well (I especially love the voiced characters/talking heads; one of my other favorites is when you prank call the Enclave in Fallout 2)

Uhhh @mikek17 we're not talking about dialogue systems here.... We all know fo4s dialogue system is bad and linear as fuck. We're talking about the quality of the dialogue itself.

Ah yes, OK, sorry. I guess I ignored the "better written" part. But sadly there is not much good dialogue in Fallout 4 when it comes to character interaction, I mean I saw a lot of potential in "Father" but there is barely anything you can talk about, I thought he'd have a pretty interesting life, but sadly there is not much.
But of course Fallout New Vegas in my opinion has the best dialogue, manly because the characters (especially the companions) where very well-written and you could do a lot with them. Even be jerks to them, sometimes. And there's Arcade, like it seems even being a sort of archetypal character he's still got a lot of interesting things to say. And even random people on the street have interesting things to say. That's what makes the dialogue well-written in New Vegas. It's comprised mostly of meaningful interactions.

I actually got cancer from that confrontation with Kellogg. I thought it was ultra cringey and completely out of place because the player character gets all angry and starts yelling at the dude.

@paulcarroll I thought you were going to say something about Kellogg's monologue from that Far Cry-ish brain sequence where you explore his memories.

    His quote

"The thing about happiness is that you only know you had it when it's gone. I mean, you may think to yourself that you're happy. But you don't really believe it. You focus on the petty bullshit, or the next job, or whatever. It's only looking back, by comparison to what comes after, that you really understand that's what happiness felt like."

-one of the very few actual good quotes in Fallout 4.

This basically equates to "you never know what you have until Its gone" which is cliché as fuck.

    My personal favorite fo4 quote?

"No shit I smell like shit I work with shit" from some terminal in a grocery store I think.

New Vegas is definitely the best written for me. The dialogue has a perfect blend of comedy, philosophy, and personality.

"Nothing to impede progress. If you want to see the fate of democracies, look out the windows."- mr house

"Sure, boss. I'd be happy to prolong my captivity and psychological abuse to tighten some lug nuts for you."- Raul

Great. Thanks. Thank you. I'll encourage people to name their non-ugly children after you. Seriously." -Veronica

As much as I want to use the Master's speech from Fallout 1 or something from Fallout 2, New Vegas was more memorable for me so I'll go with New Vegas. Here are a couple of lines from the many memorable quotes in that game:

    - Johsua Graham

    - Ulysses

    - Veronica Santangelo (an actual reference to FO3 in New Vegas that FO4 inversely does not do for New Vegas properly)

    - Elijah

    - Robert House

    - Craig Boone

Why is it that every one who votes for fallout 4 refuses to post a favorite quote of theirs? Its in the mothafriggen title. C'mon guys.

@Slayerite. I'd love to hear your favorite fo4 quote.

... Dude. Are goddamn serious? I'm Litteraly the only person responding to you without being an ass. I now see the folly of my ways. I made a perfectly reasonable request. I asked your opinion on something. And your response is basically
Well if you're not going to give specific opinions and engage in meaningful discussion then why are you here? The only possible answer is that you're trolling. I'm done feeding you.
I know you don't care but I'm not feeding you any longer after this post. And to the rest of NMA I'm sorry I kept feeding it in the first place.

    A helpful guide:

Fallout 2's dialogue was pretty great, I suppose. Specifically the *special* dialogue with the mob boss's daughter, the one where if you refuse sex then you say "Shhhh! If you dont be quiet, George won't let me play with th'rabbitz! Shhhh!".

Man, I miss role-playing low intelligence characters in Fallout games. Even New Vegas could only manage token attempts at best(though those are still hilarious).

I do like how Leslie Ann Bishop directly references the rather obvious consequences of not using a condom when having sex with Angela Bishop:
    and
At least New Vegas took care to mention the Mr. Bishop born from doing so either ways.
