10 years ago on this date, the official site was updated with this message:
Project Update: We are starting to put together "final candidates." These are CDs that could possibly be final versions, if we experience no major bugs during the testing phase. The Quality Assurance team is staying extra late to go over the latest version. As soon as we silver, and can confirm the lack of major crash bugs or other stop shipment style bugs, we'll be posting here... -- 23 Sep 1997
A glorious date. To commemorate, NMA brings you 4 piece of Leonard Boyarsky's original concept art, with thanks to Leonard himself.

Leonard gives the following descriptions:
Fallout Tales #2: larger version of the painting I did for the Fallout Tales #2 loading screen

Fallout Tales #2 sketch: original sketch for above - interesting story behind this image. Jason and I had already done a first draft of the story for FO2, and at one point the player was to be ambushed by lobotomized creatures (lobotomites), when a renegade brotherhood soldier comes to his rescue. Get it? It's Fallout Tales # 2 and it was an illustration of a scene from FO2. Of course, the story was changed after FO1 was released, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Gretch: it's gretch, man

Skill Guy: this is the first ever drawing of the 'skill guy' as I originally called him. I did it to show everyone what I was going on about. It was then given to George Almond, who did the first few initial cards (and began the progression from what you see in this pic to the final version). Tramell Isaac (T.Ray) then took over the cards and did the rest of them, finalizing his 'look'.
No Mutants Allowed presents: Fallout's 10th anniversary.

Many thanks.

Skill guy does avoid the Vault/Pip-Boy confusion. ;) Interesting to see how it evolved.

I love the detail on the sketch version.

Silly me, I was wondering if it had been recreated from the existing resources somehow.

This stuff is really great. I have always really loved the Fallout Tales comic book cover art. Aside from the game itself, these scenes (particularly the one with the Vault Dweller and his female companion striking cheesy action poses in the middle of a ruined city) were always the best conveyors of the Fallout 'look' and 'feel' for me. I wonder if Mr. Boyarsky would ever be convinced to paint a few more scenes, just for old times sake. What a talented group of people.

Okay, maybe I'm having a stupid moment but Leonard says:

I don't get it. What's he mean get it!? AHHHHH

Also, awesome pics. The loading screen is fantabulous

They were foreshadowing Fallout 2 in that artwork, that's all there is to get. Thje image was from a Issue #2 of the non-existent Fallout Tales comic.

Also, did it strike anyone else that Fallout only got "Best of..." awards after the release?

did anyone else notice that the brotherhood guy is extending his pinky finger like he's going to have a cup of tea?

Extending the pinky finger is a gesture whores made when drinking tea to subtly indicate their profession.

And I thought making the BOS into "police of the wasteland" was bad.

This may sound dumb but what is lobotomized creatures (lobotomites)? And I still play FO1 & FO2 on my laptop when I am not busy and when I need inspuration for my fallout game I am running nere in Virginia. :D
