Fallout's international following

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Sorry, I've always wondered this and never really had it answered.

What gave Fallout such a strong international following? I've seen Russian websites, French websites, Portuguese websites, etc. I haven't seen this with any other game, was Fallout more readily avaliable in other parts of the world?

I wondered this too. I just don't understand how a game can be more popular in other countries than the US.

kind of sad, too...

I'd attribute that to the Europese having higher standards or something. US gamers have a tendency to move from one shiny thing to another. Always have, with few exceptions.

It's not just FO. The best System Shock site is run by a German, and so on. I like to think it's just better appreciation of decent games over short-burn fun.

Or maybe because most Europeans recognize and appreciate Art in every form known to man? Sheeesh.

I live in the US but I mainly agree with you there.
I believe it is because my country is too "puritan", even more so than England.

Probably because Fallout touches on things that everybody, regardless of nationality, can understand and relate to. The themes addressed in FO1 and 2 are universal.

A portuguese-language website could be as well a brazilian-portuguese one, so it's not necessarily an EuropeanXAmerican issue. Thing is, Fallout never had reached the big American gaming market, the final big goal of any gaming company. So it remained with few fans in the USA, and that way the fans from other parts of the world stand up on the internet with more ease, without the heaps of American fans that usually characterize successful sales.

We have a small core of Fallout fans in Singapore as well.

Not big enough for our own website, so we'll lurk here.

I wish there's more fans of Fallout in Singapore though.

Most of people I know are FO3 fans.

You forgot about Czech following (madbrahmin.cz is the biggest site). It's probably due to the quality of the game and of the translation (F1 & F2 were distributed around 1999-2000 with game magazine LEVEL, then famous and readable).

Internationally - I would say it's a good game, with a good theme from the time when only nerds used the Internet. Special times. I remember downloading Fallout bootup screens with my dial-up modem, from Madbrahmin (Vault šílené brahminy) back even before the redesign 8 years ago... I feel old

I can even remember how I got the CD - my mother used to buy me the magazine LEVEL, I can remember how she came back from work at around 7 on Friday (the beginning of may), gave me the magazine, I installed Fallout and was immediately stunned... The atmosphere, everything...

(I'm sorry for the babbling, it's 0:30 am here and I had 3 hours of sleep last night; nostalgia rules  ).
