Fan interview polls question

hey! goddammit, it was a question to end the topic once and for all, and it was never definite...even though i pretty much knew the answer before asking it.

Not children, the answers were not final. And the quest essential people is something that needs more clarification, and hopefully some quantification.

Children are immortal. If you actually needs the confirmed then you probably need a sign saying "Don't jump into the shark pool" or otherwise you'd jump into the shark pool.

Quest essential people can be killed. Plot essential people can not. They are trying to minimize this, but yes there will be immortal NPCs. Who, when, where? Dunno, but they're not going to tell us that, are they.

I'm not totally bothered with the concept of plot essential characters being immortal, but I just hope they have the ability to trim down the amount they keep unkillable.

What is it with Bethesda's newer games that makes it so difficult for them to just intertwine the characters into the story so that their death doesn't necessarily destroy the plotline? Almost all the major RPGs of the 80s and 90s made it possible to waste important NPCs and still move along.

Maybe it has something to do with the increased reliance on NPCs to move the story along I guess. In a day and age where people think it's boring to discover things by themselves and just have some droll fellow read it out for them.
Ah boy.

I still don't get why they can't use the gameplay mechanism employed by the previous Fallouts and Arcanum: if you kill a "plot essential" character, you find an object on their corpse that helps move the game forward.
I'm replaying Arcanum at the moment, and while the theory sounds like it could be contrived, in practise it works really well.

Better yet, they should employ the oldest trick in the book - where major plot points are revealed in fixed occurrences while superfluous but supporting plot elements are given out as the player finds them.

It's entirely possible to ignore most of Fallout's story but still beat it, I know I did it the first time I played through, I simply blasted Lou by picking the meanest dialog option, and I opted to skip The Master's little speech and just pick him apart. Yet I still got the general gist of the Supermutant army taking over and whatnot.

It's simple enough to make a basic but interesting plot as Fallout did and have the player discover the rest himself. It works.
At no point was it necessary to discover that Supermutants were sterile, and at no point did you have to dig into Lou's opinions to get some back story or wax off about old days with Harold to learn about the Master's past.

The funny thing is that it's actually easier to do, but it rewards the players who really explore the world and take the time to interact with characters.
It's a pretty cool concept that Bethesda should maybe pick up on, so they can work on this little thing they call "immersive gaming" so that their new games are less sodden story books and more interactive.

Am I alone who finds this immensely ridiculous and detestable? I realize that "how will weapon reloading be accomplished during combat?" is a highly complicated question, but they closed the poll back in May, for crying out loud. Is there any other conclusion to reach from this other than Bethesda likes to treat its fans like trash? You tell me.

In regards to essential NPCs, it works like Oblivion, in that when they "die" they get knocked "unconscious" and get up a little while later. It worked well in Oblivion, so we kept that system, as you can still attack everyone that you want, and get at least a small benefit (being able to avoid them while they are down). I will say that the number of essential characters is minute compared to Oblivion and we've gone to pretty big lengths to cover a lot of people's deaths, but sometimes that's just not possible.

Not possible?? hmmm I seem to recall a couple of games where the main quest could be completed and yet there were no immortal characters... ohh yeah, fallout 1 and 2!

wake up people it's up!
Done and done.

Ausir beat you to it, but getting up the lay-out and selecting the questions took a while.
