Fav weapon...why?

Wait... gradual weapon progression destroys your role playing experience?
No, not exactly. Being invincible destroys my role playing experience. Especially with New Vegas, having a more moderate inventory scheme (scoped hunting rifle, combat knife, dynamite, Chinese pistol, etc.) on the highest difficulty, and with Hardcore Mode on, made the game far more challenging, and far more enjoyable, for me.

FO1: I'll go with the Turbo Plasma Rifle obviously, but I also feel the need to mention the humble Shotgun, so useful earlier in the game.
FO2: Bozar. There is something memorable about this gun. If someone asked me to name a gun from FO2, my first answer would be Bozar. It also kicks ass, I think that's the main thing.
FO3: The orbital strike that obliterates the Citadel counts, I believe?
FNV: This game offers a lot of good weapons, but I'll go with a Sniper Rifle with a silencer attached. The reason for that being, most combat in the game happens outside in the open, where I can sneak up on enemies and pick them off from afar. A silencer makes the shooter much harder to detect.

Agreed. Hand-to-hand characters with low perception just sucks balls; unarmed/melee combats against any group of enemies is nothing but a frenetic mess. I thinks FNV is meant to be played as a sniper, the intro animation with badass ranger dressed in riot gear just screams that! With Ed-E and some of the scoped rifles any opponents are easy pickings, even on hard/hardcore settings.

Well, I remember melee weapons being rather useful in Dead Money. Until I found a rifle, that is. And ammo. But by the time I had enough, I was already in the casino. Granted, I needed to sneak up on Ghost People, but that is more because with Very Hard and Project Nevada a Ghost Person's punch is similar to getting hit by a train. It also felt cool to gather the materials for and assemble my own knife spear.

But in the main game melee range combat is somewhat less viable, since it takes place in the desert, which is quite vast and empty. As such, you'd have to either sneak up on your enemy, or run up to them. Sneaking is an option, but in the open and in broad daylight might be a bit tricky. Running up to the enemy just gives them more time to shoot you until the lead wieghs you down so much, you can't run anymore. Or you can't run because you are dead. One of the two. You could technically use a power armour (or any other good armour) not to die while charging, but it'd still be hard to pull off on higher difficulties, not to mention completely pointless, because you can get them just as dead in a much less risky way. It's also worth noting that the melee weapons attack animations are shit.

I enjoy melee combat, myself, but I can't deny that it consists of-- and perfectly resembles-- flailing away like you just walked into a cloud of radioactive bees. It's fitting that wasteland brawling is more of a rough and sloppy affair than a choreographed battle dance, but that will only take you so far as a justification, especially in light of the fact that it's actually an engine issue carried over from a franchise where 90% of the player's interaction with the world consisted of hitting things with other things.

Still love me some war club though. Few things make you feel more accomplished than clearing out the deathclaw promontory on Hard with nothing but light armor, a giant sack full of chems, and a particularly heavy stick. I also consider the fact that it makes the sound of a lead pipe when it hits more of a feature than a bug.

The only melee weapon I've enjoyed swinging around with was Proton Axe in OWB. It reminded me of first Wasteland!

Well, duh. The turbines are hidden within the casing so as not to be damaged in heavy-turbo-combat-plasma-energy-power-thisisgettingstupid-kickass action.

It doesn't look much like a rifle though. I'm not an expert on the subject (or in fact know anything about it), but I looked it up and apparently rifles are typically designed to be fired from the shoulder. The animation in the old games could be blamed on the sprites, but Winchester P94 appears also in FNV and there's little doubt about it being very unriflelike.

But it's still awesome.

Technically speaking, there are no turbines. It's just hot-wired to fire more quickly. So the only part of the name that isn't completely stupid is "plasma".

May sound funny, but my best weapon are my companions. If you have 3 ed-es (empowered), 2 Enclave soldiers, 2 mantises, 2 bees (empowered) + standard companions, you don't need to fight - just walk:) When I played alone I preferred stealthy way, being unseen by most of enemies I used modded sniper rifles and modded knife with freezing effect.

God that sounds awful... is this a Fallout forum? lol.

Glad you are enjoying your custom mods though, sounds... interesting.

Fallout: .223 Pistol, after clearing that guy's house and getting that as a reward I held onto it and shot the master's army in the eyes, alot.
Fallout 2: M72 Gauss Rifle, something is just too satisfying about ALWAYS critically blowing off chunks of my opponent's body
Fallout Tactics: The AK-47, carried me throughout the game until i picked up energy weapons on my first play through (I didn't have the strength or skill to use big guns)
Fallout New Vegas: Varmint Rifle, fully modded, just was fun getting that little gun to do more and more stuff.
Fallout 3: Nothing really comes to mind, nothing impressed me and I ended up using alot of modded weapons instead.

Fallout: I have to say the Super Sledge. Nothing more satisfying than whacking Super Mutants in the groin with it...
Fallout 2: Bozar
Fallout 3: Gatling Laser
Fallout New Vegas: Q-35 Matter Modulator

In the first Fallout, I always had a weakness for the turbo plasma rifle and "the bug" that goes with it. I mean, I love the moment when you're halfway to the Glow and you stumble on a group of 4-5 raiders and are able to wipe them out in just one round. Let it be known that today I'm particularly in love with Fallout 1.

Fallout 1: Turbo Plasma Rifle
Fallout 2: Bozar, I guess. I liked the combat shotgun as a backup weapon.
Fallout 3: I liked the assault rifles, also the plasma rifles.
Fallout New Vegas: Light Shining in the Darkness, best backup weapon ever. I also like the Assault Carbine, the sniper rifle and the Anti-materiel rifle.

Hey, I almost forgot cal 44 trail carbine, the most finest longarm in whole game! Perhaps it is not any pinnacle in terms of damage per second and reloading needs some time, but otherwise it's a pure pleasure to shoot with it. Very light and compact gun, shoots with recoil barely noticeable, pretty accurate even on long range thanks to the scope. If I'd ever force myself to another playthrough, I'm definitely going for the Cowboy perk and cal 44 weaponry. Thanks to the various perks as "Lord Death" granted for killing, the antimaterial rifle feels overpowered a little in the end anyway.

The Glock plasma pistol / Plasma defender.

I love the design, and it's such a good pistol.
I always try to get one when going Energy Weapons.

The weapon I like for artistic reasons as opposed to usefulness is the 10mm pistol for being based off this

Yep that looks exactly like the 10mm Pistol. When I did some sprite editing on the pistol I used an incremental resize (resizes up like 10 times at 10% each) and I realized the round thing above the grip Is In Fact a revolver cylinder. Kinda crazy that people have been missing that for the last 18 years.

I can see how maybe a gun could use loose ammunition and reload each cylinder chamber, combining maybe the concepts of a revolver and a tube fed gun at the same time, all you need is a spring loaded bullet retainer in the cylinder (pushes a little bead down to hold the bullet in place). And on the other side it could kick a spent round out to free the chamber up for another reload.

Oh my favorite fallout 1 and 2 guns?

In Fallout 1 the standard CZ53 Minigun is my most favorite, even above the 223 pistol. With 2 ranks of the bonus ranged damage perk the gun does enough damage to hurt BOS power armor guys, and when combined with AP ammunition it tears them to shreds (85 to 160 damage regularly seen). I can easily kill off the entire BOS bunker with a minigun and enough AP ammo.
--- The main reason it works is because the Damage Multiplier function in all Fallout 1 iterations and patches is broken. So the 2/1 of JHP and 1/2 of AP are ignored but the -35% DR is not.

Fallout 2:
P-90C because it takes the crappy, heavy-in-pocket 10mm ammo that has been piling up all game long and uses it to cause heinous flesh-ripping damage which is strong enough to even put wanamingos in their grave (or at least thats how I remember it). The damage was even higher than the assault rifle and it bursted for 12 hits. The AP cost is also lower than the other weapons too. Even though some other guns like the bozar, 2mm, and pulse weapons were the way to go this was better than having a 223 pistol as a sidearm.

Most Hated Weapons:
G-11 and G-11E, because the weapons were a failure in real life, and the 4.7mm ammunition they use is underpowered in real life too and not worthy of the stats they give it. The stats and usefulness of the 4.7mm/G-11 might be relevant if it was calculating a 3-Hit burst the weapon was famous for, but that would mean only 16 attacks worth of ammo not 50. Overall it didnt belong, it was a dismal failure in real life, and it didnt give the guys you faced enough of an advantage with it.
