FEAR 2 demo: impressions?

I guess I could go through all the previous posts but my question is, is the game worth buying?

Seeing as there isn't anything science fiction FPS like coming up within the next couple of months on the PC, and I do not have a PS3 yet (so no Resident Evil 5 for me), this might be the only option.

There is a chance Resident Evil 5 will come out on PC, given Capcom's recent policy on multiplatform games. Shit, they are even releasing Street Fighter 4 for PC.
Games seems to be quite fun, so I'd say if you haven't got anything else to look forward to, grab it. But.. can't you play the demo yourself? Seems like a reasonable method of deciding wether to buy it.

Well the thing is Multidirectional, most of Capcom's console ports in the past turned out pretty bad, look at RE4
The best version of RE5 will probably turn out to be on the Playstation 3.

As for the demo, I just tried it.
It looks very good, very worked out and detailed, but to be honest I found it rather boring, much like FEAR 1.
The pseudo horror elements don't really get to me.

I guess I should skip this game.

Well if you didn't like the first one, obviously you won't like the second. Horror elements never really worked in FEAR 1 too, yeah, they are just the same here. It's the shooting parts that I liked about it.
Actually the port for RE4 is just fine to me, I'd live with another one just like it for RE5.. Seriously, what's so terrible about it (patched version I mean) besides controls? If you have a gamepad (wich is cheap) then it's pretty much the same game as on consoles, add some mods to it and it becomes even better. Or maybe I'm the only one who hasn't experienced any problems with it. I still play it and it seems just as good today as when I first played it. Well I did hear that Gamecube version might be better, but I can't see PS2 port being any better than PC version. I know they should have made controls better and added mouse support, but I love playing it with gamepad so much that I wouldn't even want to switch to mouse/keyboard setup.
And I may be wrong about this, but wasn't it Ubisoft, not Capcom, who did all the "work" on RE4 PC port? However that may be, if there is a PC port for RE5, I think they'll do better this time around, considering all the hate surrounding RE4 port, unless they want to kill all their future PC releases too.

Well I did play Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube and I enjoyed it a lot.
At the moment I was going through a RE craze and played almost all the games and I found RE4 to be one of the better ones control wise.

Well I hope that Capcom does a better port.

Capcom usually make VERY good ports for the PC. Devil May Cry 4 and Lost Planet are two good examples. they even added some DX 10 effects to both games.
as for RE4 for the PC, well...just like multidirectional said it was all ubisofts "work".

Just beat fear2, and I've got to say that was one hell of a ride.

Great graphics/sound, and it runs great too with everything besides AA maxed (which really isn't needed with the heavy amount of motion blurring).

The combat is very much improved over the first fear (enemies will knock down shelves/kick over tables for cover.. and now so can you), and the weapons all handled like you'd expect them to. The addition of iron sights is icing on the cake. Oh, and piloting the mechs is a fucking blast.

While the first game relied more on cheap scares here and there, fear2 gives you many signals that you're about to be attacked (blinking flashlight/radio static/strange red haze) which adds to the tension.

Best of all, it neatly wraps up all of the loose ends from the first one (never tried the expansions).

It looks like there's going to be a fear3.

Well, I suppose it's nice that you liked it, but my impressions are pretty much the opposite. I played it for about 4 hours and then I gave up cause it bored me to death. Namely - I didn't die once on the hardest difficulty.. What the fuck kind of "Hard mode" is that? I'm not a pro, I consider myself to be a casual gamer and this sucks.. Intrusive immersion breaking HUD doesn't help too. Enemies glowing in slow-mo just look fucking ugly, it's good that at least the mod to remove grain filter which I posted for demo version works with full version as well. No leaning instantly makes combat much worse for me, yeah iron sights are nice, but I prefer leaning over it, as iron sights aren't even needed for the most part. Enemies making cover for themselves usually work out in my advantage cause I kill them WHILE THEY ARE MAKING COVER. I almost never used medpacks too, cause of those injectors lying around everywhere.
I did give it a chance, but it's nowhere near the first game in my book. Of course I haven't finished it, and it doesn't seem right now that I'll ever will, so my impressions may be limited, maybe game does get more fun/challenging in later parts.

The first one scared the shit out of me, and the second one looks equally scary...

Played the demo though, and I think it feels enough like FEAR 1 to be enjoyable. I didn't finish the first one so I can't comment on story.

I did finish it and still can't comment on the story, it didn't appear to have one.

Ok ok it had a small one involving the psychic representation of a mother killing people for some reason but that got in the way of shooting people.

My comment on the story: it's pretty much equally terrible to that of the first game. I didn't finish the second, but I have no reason to believe it get's any better further in the game. "Scary" flashbacks/hallucinations are usually meaningless too.. And very predictable, even more predictable than in the first game.

Holy crap, there's no fucking quicksave. Doesn't seem to be any save options at all. What the fuck were they thinking?
Also, the HUD and filmgrain effects are pissing me off after just 1 hour of playtime.

The good news is that it runs fucking fantastic.
And I found out how to do the slide kick.
Of course, I can't do the awesome 'load quicksave before massive fight and run through it a couple of times kicking everyone in the face' bit because THERE'S NO FUCKING QUICKSAVE ARGH

I already posted the link to the "Clarity Mod" which removes the filmgrain before in this thread, you may as well try it. Works fine for me. I suppose the no quicksave thing is supposed to make game more challenging, but it still is too easy. Maybe it was designed specifically for gamepads.. First one was a PC game first and foremost, hence the annoying differences.

Cool, even thought I've played it about 10 times now, the ghosts in the school still scare the crap out of me, and I usually end up just shooting everywhere with SMG, hoping to hit something.

The story isn't spoon fed to you. You need to pick up the intel.

It's well-written, and provides a ton of background to what's going on.

For the people complaining about the lack of quicksaves... play on a lower difficulty if that's causing you problems. The checkpoints are frequent enough so that you're never replaying extended sections of the game. Hell, they could have spaced out the checkpoints even further and it wouldn't have been bad.

Played through it twice now on hard, and I can say that the difficulty was quite adequate (this coming from someone who could steamroll far cry on the hardest settings possible.. which also lacked quicksaves).

It's nothing to do with difficulty it's outdated console design that was enforced by the technology of the time and has no place in pc gaming or 21st century gaming in general. It was annoying ten years ago when you were lucky a console had a memory card there's no need for it now. Basically it's only used by retard designers who can't think of any other way to include tension into their game.

The first game was mediocre, but from everything I've heard about the second it's now definately one to miss.

Oh you could save anytime in Far Cry, just not with a hotkey unless in cheat mode.
