Feargus talks about Fallout 3 on Gamespot

Gamespot posted a great interview with former BIS-head and now boss of Obsidian Studios Feargus Urquhart. Feargus is pretty careful in what he says and doesn't say throughout most of the interview, but it's interesting. Some bits:

GS: Several screenshots from Fallout 3 have emerged, as have some plot details. Looking at both of them, do you feel that BIS was taking the franchise in the right direction?

FU: Actually, one of the screenshots--the vault--was a test we did in 2002 while I was there. At least the background art [was], the vault dwellers must have been added by the now-defunct Fallout team. I am very impressed with what the guys put together for the town level and from the looks of that screenshot, they were on the track to come up with a great successor to the first two Fallouts.

(...)

GS: Some rumors are saying that a group of former BIS developers are trying to buy the game from Interplay and finish it themselves. How likely do you think that is?

FU: Well as can be read in many of Interplay's SEC filings, Interplay needs money. If a group of people could put together enough funding to interest Interplay, they could probably get the license.

GS: Does Obsidian have any desire to buy Fallout 3 from Interplay?

FU: We are very new company and do not have the financial resources to buy a license like that. However, if a publisher were to be interested in us making the game after they acquired the license, we would be more than happy to talk to them. We have a number of people here at Obsidian who worked on Fallout and Fallout 2 including Brian Menze who perfected the PiP Boy look and Chris Avellone who many saw as Fallout until he left Interplay to found Obsidian as one of its owners.

Tomorrow, in Part Two of the interview: Feargus comments on the future of Obsidian, Interplay, and the role-playing genre in general.

Great work, Tor Thorsen, two thumbs up

Thanks go out to both Mr Teatime and Bobbinfor pointing this out. Cheers, guys.

Very interesting indeed. Good job on finding it guys. I rarely have the time to look myself so I always check the news here.

Hence the reason why we're here 8)

And I agree, interesting interview..

You know...

The more I read about it, the impressions from the former developers, the more I keep playing "what if" games in my head.

Dammit.

I'm gonna agree with you, Pope. I'm just now thinking, What if Obsidian obtained the Fallout license? I'm thinking that it would be amazing.

They would do so only if a major publisher, or Bioware gave them money and gave thumbs up for the project. Feargus would take it, and since he only has a small team for his own project, it is very likely he'd hire many ex-BISers, the ex-Van Buren team, to do it, with him dropping in. It would be excellent.

GS: Is Obsidian's upcoming collaboration with BioWare an entirely new RPG, or will it be a title we've never seen before?

FU: Actually, we are not working on any specific projects with BioWare right now. The announcement that went out a number of months ago was to let people know that we are talking about things and that we will constantly explore ways to work together.

So this means Obsidina probably isn't working on KotOR2, doesn't it?

Obsidian currently has permission to make KotOR2. And since their new project is for console and PC, it is a safe bet to say they are... but then, also safe to say they aren't. I personally hope its the latter, but who knows.

KOTOR2 is what Obsidian is working on. I could be wrong, but I would be willing to bet on it.

::Cue a Obsidian member saying "want to bet" and making me look dumb(er)::

I just think that it means Obsidian is on its own. IE Bioware and Lucas thinks they can handle their shit well enough for them to do a game without Bioware watching them.

Yeah, and Satan is about to buy a new fur coat.

KOTOR is directly tied ot Bioware and Lucas. It's going to have their name on it and if it is a failure it's going to be very bad for their rep. Plus Obsidian is a very unproven company. No way they're letting them reign free.

FU: I think even the PC RPGers want to see that the games they play are easier to play. That may sound strange, but I liken it to the decision in the late '80s to include automaps in the RPGs of the time rather than force the player to map everything on graph paper. Manuals are becoming a thing of the past, and so even PC RPGs need to be made so that the player does not need to read 100 pages before they can even start playing.

Can't say that I agree with him fully. I'm not saying that you should be required to read a long manual just to get the hang of playing, but if the alternative is fewer options and in-game tutorials, I'd rather stick to the manual.[/quote]

Agreed, to an extent. KotOR is hailed as yet another genius game by Bioware, and no matter how many Obsidian logos are plastered on KotOR2, if Obsidian does make that game it will inevitably be tied to Bioware, and LucasArts, and the Star Wars franchise (which is already littered with a great number of crap). Obsidian's designers are respected, Bioware is not a bastardy, megalomaniac evil organisation, but it won't be a "free reign". I can see Obsidian enjoying more freedom than they might if they were not as respected and if they were working with Interplay or something, but nevertheless Bioware will "monitor' their progress.
