fixing a mirror

mor

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
we got a huge bathroom mirror i had specially made few years back and now its starts to show black areas at the sides.
after a quick check it looks like the back cover starts to peal off, any ideas how to fix it or at least avoid any further degradation?

maybe to paint over it? unless this this back cover is some kind of special metallic alloy and that wont work ?

No way to fix it. Best you can do is devise some sort of frame to cover it up. Depending on how the mirror is mounted you can try to seal the edges to prevent water/cleaning agents (which are causing the degradation) from seeping behind - probably with silicone paste.

no frame, just nicely cut edges :( well at least now i know what causing it and how to prevent it thanks !!

:wtf: I had a modernist mirror restored to full splendour just two years ago. If the mirror is worth the money (and in my case it was) or if it has enormous sentimental value to you, you should definitely consider this. It's pricey and it's not very good for the environment (so I hear), but it is possible.

I also know that there are re-silvering kits available that can repair (minor) mirror damage. They contain a lacquer and thin reflective strips. I've never used them, but I know they do exist. You should check your do-it-yourself store or the local hobby shop. They usuallly sell it.

I'm aware of that but:

1. It's a major project with no guarantee of success.
2. Kits cost a pretty penny.
3. Mercury poisoning

It's not cost-effective (as opposed to sending the mirror in for resilvering or purchasing a new one), it's dangerous and it's not something you can expect to do with any degree of success as a DIY project.
