First time out of the vault
for a long time i had the same chance of dying as dogmeat or ian. I am in the glow and every reload is because an NPC died. At what point did you try and stop keeping them alive or did you always reload?

and also, they don't seem to wear the armor I give them. i am pretty sure that is just how the game is. am I right?
 
Yep, NPC companions in FO1 is much less devoloped than in Fallout 2. All they can do is use the best weapon in their inventory, but they wont change their armor.

I gave up trying to keep them alive when i started meeting super mutants. Their miniguns and rocket launchers, coupled with the NPC's low health made me give up
 
Question: Has anyone made a mod which makes NPCs in Fallout 1 easier to use (like Fallout 2)?

I haven't bothered to look for one, I usually only play Fallout 1 with the Team X patch without mods.
 
It's pretty fucking hard to keep them alive through the Cathedral and/or the Military Base. Dogmeat dies in the Base, it's just not funny to even try to keep him alive in that place, so accept it. But I have finished games where I was able to keep Tycho, Ian and Katja alive and kicking til the very end. It's hard and it'll require you to heal them up at certain places (like the Base with those fucking forcefields), but it's doable.

* Ian, Katja and Tyho can gain up a levels (1 per players 4), change armor and combat tactics.
 
thanks. if I use this mod with an already in progress game, will they level up the next time I level?
